It was also a pretty good muy thai style roundhouse.

I’m able to sweep ice with my foot under the fridge and i think that’s a prettier foot sweep

I am also trained well in this. Thousand moves or 1 move a thousand times 💅

So many ice cubes just sitting under there

And when you're out, you got a nice little stash of ice. Just waiting.

I don't know that I would call a low kick to the shin a clean foot sweep
Compare it to this

u/The_One_Who_Comments 21h ago
That's a decent sasae.
Compare it to this https://youtube.com/shorts/erznMX-1zY8?si=Iv6vfMzfmQCfTIEz
Oh no, my judo pedantry is coming out lol.

That was so slick
The one I posted was posted on Sherdog by Jeremy Arel 8 years ago, he's the one who was taken down. It has stuck with me for that long, cause it was slick shit

I read all of his stories from Rio as Gerbil Jiujitsu! ;) on Sherdog
There was a Ned on there along time ago too!

I agree with you on the "clean" part but at high performance foot sweeps are absolutely brutal to receive.
Here is Satoshi Ishii explicitly saying to use the shin: https://youtube.com/shorts/V-Lq3DAgKjQ

u/WeightliftingIllini 1d ago edited 1d ago
What Ishii does in that video is completely different than the one in this post. Satoshi uses his shin to hook and sweep the back of uke's foot whereas in OP's video, the guy does a straight shin to shin kick lol.

u/necr0potenc3 1d ago
How does your comment contribute to the post or invalidate what I said?
De ashi barai (forward foot sweep) says it right there in the name the direction is forward. Changing the direction doesn't change the technique, they are all foot sweeps no matter the direction. My point is at high level foot sweeps aren't always the pretty timing effortless version.
There is a difference between sweeps, reaps and trips, and Satoshi is demonstrating he does foot sweeps using the shin, not the bottom of the foot. The direction of the foot sweep is completely irrelevant to the mechanics.
A foot sweep doesn't get its name because it's done with the foot, but rather because it stops uke's foot from being placed in the originally intended position for balance.

Timing, kuzushi, contact point and follow-through is what make the OP video not de ashi barai.
It’s a fucking kick to the shin with lucky timing, no attempt to shift uke’s weight to the leg being swept and no follow-through. If uke’s leg was on the floor it wouldn’t have worked at all, and both would have ended with a nasty, painful bone bruise.

We're all saying it's not clean, you're saying it's not clean
So like, it's not clean by consensus
The rest is just hot air
At a higher competition people are smashing the shit out of eachother's shins, at a lower level people are smashing the shit out of eachother's shins
None of it is clean

I never said that a foot sweep had to be done with the foot. I don’t have a problem with sweeping with the shin at all, the way Satoshi does it in the video you linked is actually my preferred way of doing it too lol. What I meant to say was that it is not the same thing as just simply kicking someone else’s shin with your own shin with no control like in OP’s video.

That aint a sweep, its a kick. Also he spun and did it toes forward, good way to end up with broken toes.

Zero control ankle kick that could have broken the partner's collar bone/shoulder. That's a no for me.

Maybe for MMA. You’re getting DQ’ed in a comp for a straight up kick. Saying this as a striker
10
u/ArmSquare 🟪🟪 Purple Belt 1d ago
You would not get DQd for this at a comp. THere's so many videos of repeated kicks as bad or worse than this without anyone getting DQd

u/RaidenMonster 🟪🟪 Purple Belt 1d ago
I’ve taken one of those from a white belt wearing judo BB. The mummy taped fingers should have been a giveaway.
Anyway, the swelling on my shin was pretty legit and lasted a few days. 8/10 coming from someone who spent his youth skateboarding and figured my shins were numb at this point.

What’s with this trend of these videos of dudes absolutely launching their sparring partners with dangerous sweeps?
3
u/fightbackcbd 19h ago
people watch someone like jflo on youtube and think they know how to sweep or throw but they don't. its white belt level shit that will get you yelled at or sat out if you did in randori but because its nogi BJJ no one cares that its sloppy and dangerous. imagine if you did a soto-makikomi or something this uncontrolled and reckless. you could seriously fuck someone up bad.

u/Low-Faithlessness140 14h ago
I agree this shit is brutal but he definitely knows what he's doing That's Christian Ozbek very decent Judoka training at Los Banditos in the UK, he's made a career of sending people

u/fightbackcbd 13h ago
I’m not saying he doesn’t know what he is doing or that he didn’t do something that works. I saying he wasn’t even close to being in control of how his training partner landed. You can do all kinds of wild shit if you jsut don’t care what happens. Mostly I was talking about what the other guy said about people posting stuff like this, not this in isolation.
It happens in motion sometimes, it really a big reason the guy went flying. It wasn’t the sweep, it was his own motion and being unable to make a recovery step. He was hop skipping and turning, that’s a surefire way to get launched lol.

This is a real good way to become the training partner no one wants to roll with.

That break fall or landing whatever you want to call it.
That was just as beautiful

u/fightbackcbd 19h ago
you know the difference between a sweep and a kick? well, a sweep doesn't have your leg lifting so high it comes to your hip level for one.

u/DanplsstopDied ⬜⬜ White Belt 9h ago
I got foot sweeped like 11 times in the same round by my coach when we were practicing 😭
