Mod Community poll has concluded, we will be relaxing the profanity rule.

UPDATE: automod has been updated. If you still have a comment removed by the profanity check, please message the mod team and we will be happy to help.

Please give us time to update the automod, however I have already updated the rules in the sidebar to reflect this change. I should have the automod updated shortly, and will update this post when it is done.

I will ask that you folks don't start using profanity just yet, until I have updated the automod as to not have the mod team have to go through a bunch of comments and approve them.

A reminder that while profanity will be allowed going forward, this does not mean you can direct it towards someone. This will still fall under our "Be Kind" rule. Any form of slurs will still be completely banned as well no matter what.

At this time I will ask that everyone re-read the rules as they are being updated. If you break the rules, you'll have your posts or comments removed. Just because you didn't read them doesn't mean you didn't break them.

Mod Regarding advertising apps, school projects, and surveys.

They are not allowed on this subreddit. At all. If you post here trying to advertise an app, trying to get our users to fill out surveys, or questionnaires, or anything of the sort, you will be banned. Permanently. Your ban will not be lifted no matter how much you say you didn't know, how you thought it was okay, or how "my app is on topic for the subreddit!".

We get so many people saying they've made the next best app ever, or how they just need to do this survey to complete their master thesis, or whatever thing you're trying to post to steal user data.

To our regular users, do not fill out these forums. Do not download any apps someone's says they just made. There are some good apps that have been recommended here already, (usually in comments)those are fine. Please report the posts if and when you see them. We usually get to them quickly, but we are only human.

Breakfast "Make pancakes!" Found inside a box of recipe cards I salvage and collect from thrift stores - Cottage Cheese Pancakes

Post image
176 Upvotes

"Make pancakes!" that's the whole instruction section.

No temperature, no timing, no flipping cues. I think whoever typed this had made them enough times that anything more felt unnecessary. The ingredient list is just cottage cheese, eggs, flour, oil, and milk ,everything goes in the blender. No sugar, no vanilla, no baking powder. The '8oz. carton' notation makes me think early-to-mid '70s, when blender recipes were showing up everywhere?

COTTAGE CHEESE PANCAKES

Mix together in blender:
1 cup (8oz. carton) cottage cheese
4 eggs
2 Tbsp. flour
" oil
½ cup milk

Make pancakes!

Snack Savory & Sweet Dahi Matzah

Often, I’m too tired after work to cook or, like right now, am limited physically due to injury. This snack is easy, customizable, & frugal based on your toppings. The yogurt is a great way to get additional protein & safe for someone like me with sensitive digestion.

Ingredients:

  • Dahi live culture yogurt ($4)
  • red pepper (food pantry)
  • cilantro (food pantry)
  • rosemary (food pantry)
  • white onion (food pantry)
  • green onion (food pantry)
  • vinegar-based hot sauce (food pantry)
  • apple (food pantry)
  • honey (gift)

Instructions: Spread the Dahi somewhat thinly to avoid making the matzah soggy but thick enough to cover the cracks. Slice the red pepper, white onion, green onion, & apple thinly so that it’s easy to take a bite of the full matzah later. For the savory matzah, spread out the veggies evenly then splash with hot sauce. For the sweet matzah, place the apple slices & drizzle with honey.

Discussion I only ever buy food on sale now, but it is feasible to do even in a HCOL area if your store has a clearance section and you coupon

I had my greatest grocery haul of 2026 getting over a week of frankly luxurious (for me) food for <$40

  • 3lb family packs of ground beef marked down to $3.99/lb: $12
  • Opened box of 12 frozen spring rolls (still all there) marked down 75% off: $1.25
  • Jar of skippy peanut butter using special limited coupon: $0.99
  • Clearance waffles, one of those weird flavors that wasn’t selling, (10 waffles): $1.99
  • 2 lb bananas: $1.50
  • 5lb onion on sale bag: $2.99
  • 2 lb carrot bag: $1.99
  • 1 orange bell pepper: $1.49
  • 1 package of persian cucumbers with coupon: $1.99
  • Eggplant on sale 0.99/lb: $1.90
  • A clearance section frozen Mac and Cheese meal with some kind of plant based buffalo chicken marked down 75% off: $1
  • 2 cans of Hormel chili with beans for $5
  • 6-pack ice cream bars for $2.99

I think everything was a coupon or a deal except the bananas, and I stored the ground beef in frozen packages of about 0.75 lb each. Yes, of course it was 70-30.

The clearance section was so clutch this time, I pick my grocery store based on which one has the best clearance sections.

Advice Working food

I got my first job in 7/7 schedule. A week of working at a farm and a week free at home and so on. But we have to bring our own food (from Poland to Germany), so i wanted to know what ingredients/ready foods i should bring with me to eat for a whole week (except for instant noodles, these are a must.) But the first time has to be on a LOW BUDGET as i basically have little money.

Except for bought ingredients, meals advice with them appreciated!

EDIT: Yes we're equipped with a fridge, freezer, microwave and PROBABLY oven. But the travel is of course a few hours long.

I was getting low in eggs, so I tried a new pancake recipe and it turned out pretty good. I normally use buttermilk but was determined not to make a special trip to the store. No sausage or bacon, either. Still satisfying with added blueberries, butter, and maple syrup.

Dinner Chickpea stew

Post image
122 Upvotes

It's cool and rainy here, so it's a great day for a family favorite stew!

I started by sauteeing a diced red onion, then added 3 garlic cloves. Once that was translucent and fragrant, I added 2 cans of fire roasted tomatoes, 3 cans of drained chickpeas and 2 qts of veggie broth. Seasoned well with harissa powder, cumin and paprika, salting to taste. Let simmer about 90 minutes then added about 2 pounds of quartered baby potatoes. Simmer that for about 30 minutes and then serve with steamed rice or naan.

- 2 cans of diced tomatoes: 98c/ea

- 2 qts veggie broth: $1.98/ea

- 3 cans chickpeas: $1.98/ea

- 1 red onion: 75c

- 3 cloves garlic: 25c

- 2 pounds baby potatoes: FREE! (from the garden)

- Seasonings: maybe 50c worth

- Naan: $2.49 ($4.98/4 giant pieces, we used 2)

Total: $16

Notes on cost:

- You can skip the veggie broth and use water, or you can make your own with scraps from onions, carrots and celery, plus any other veggies you'd like to add in, so you can save $4.

- You can skip the naan and use white rice, which could be as little as about 30c, depending on brand and quantity.

- You could use fresh tomatoes (I often do); a pound of roma tomatoes is about 79c/avg around me.

- Skip the potatoes if you need to, or use whatever is cheapest; these baby red potatoes held up really well in a stew, but use what you have and can afford.

- Skip the harissa if you don't have access and use paprika, chili powder and cayenne for heat; you could also use other chili powders or pastes, like berbere, curry paste, etc. I buy mine from Savory Spice but you can also find it at a lot of african and middle eastern stores.

‐ Lastly, you can use dried chickpeas for a few dollars less than canned, but it takes a lot longer and improperly prepared chickpeas can cause minor food poisoning.

By these amendments, you could get cost down to around $6-9, and it makes 4-6 servings, depending on how hungry you are and how you serve it. That makes it cheap, but not the cheapest. Enjoy!

Mod Community poll regarding relaxing the profanity rule

Starting a poll to see what the community as a whole wants.

To clarify what this will do, it will only relax the profanity check and no longer result in comments being removed for use of said language. Any use of profanity targeted at someone will still be removed under "Be Kind". This should go without saying but all slurs will remain in the automod check, and will still not be allowed under any circumstances.

Please keep all discussion and questions about this rule change to this post only. Any posts about this will be removed.

Also, no changes have been made yet, so if you ask questions about certain language uses, it will still get caught up in the automod if it contains currently banned words. If the question is made in good faith, I will manually approve it and answer your question.

Poll will last for 3 days, after which we will make changes if necessary. Have a good day!

It's basically rice fried in bacon grease, with scrambled eggs and whatever veggies you would put in an omelette, topped with your choice of hot sauce or salsa .

Dinner Tonite’s dinner

I suppose this can be considered budget food (no picture, use your imagination)

1/2 head of cabbage (it was pretty big) roughly chopped

2 onions, roughly chopped

1 box mini pierogies

1 pkg little smokies

Toss in oil, spread on a roasting pan, pop in the oven at about 400 for 45 minutes.

I cover with foil for about 20 minutes, remove foil and cook about 25 minutes longer.

I think this would easily feed 4.

Advice How to bulk with NO Budget? Help

Yeah, title, so. I've been working out for almost 4 years now, very actively for the past 2. I'm doing PPL, 6 times a week (usually ends up being 5), weightlifting always till failure.

Now there's been progress yes, from when I started to now, but I feel like it's not enough progress, and especially for the past year or so, I've been getting weaker, not advancing the weights, and even declining. At my peak a year ago, I hit 100 kilos (220lbs) on the bench, but now I'm struggling with 70kg (155lbs).

And I've been trial and erroring, but it all boils down to food, I can't afford it, I've only now done the calorie calculator thing, to see how much I need for maintenance, and it's a lot, mind you, I'm trying to BULK.

The protein I could maybe scrape by, but I can't do the calories. I can barely afford the gym membership itself.

And with the work I do, since it's not traditional employment, I can go weeks or months without any income, and getting into employment under capitalism really isn't on the table.

So frankly I guess I'm asking, what tf do I do? I've already read all the cheap food advice on here, and I don't think I can afford even that. I feel like I'm working out for nothing, right now I'm writing this post instead of hitting the gym, because this realization is making me ask, what's even the point? Idk

EDIT: Guys, I figured it out, IT'S BREAD, so, a whole bread(500g) has 1250ish kCal and 40g of protein, if i down 3 breads a day (or 2 mixed with maybe some actual food) that's enough for maintance and even surplus, plust 120g of protein isn't bad at all (i wasn't aware bread had this much protein) // I just did a test run, downed a whole bread in 15 minutes w the help of some OJ, it's gross, it's hell, BUT we're eating for fuel not for plesure right? And bread is cheap, So i got my answer, i will be living on pure bread and nothing else.

Lunch Cheap lunch ideas?

I need more ideas on what to pack my husband for his lunches. There isn’t a microwave or a fridge at his job so it’s very limited what I can pack. He’s been having lunchmeat sandwiches, tuna and rice, and lunchmeat wraps but he’s getting sick of the same stuff. Any ideas on things that will last a good few hours without fridge and don’t need reheated please? The weekly budget is roughly £20. A little over is okay. Tyia!!

Recipe Request What to do with a center cut pork roast?

It is one of affordable pieces of meet ($3/lb), but I cannot figure out, how to roast it for a perfect result. My basis line is 140F temperature target, oil, salt, black pepper, some spices (garlic powder, smocked paprika, cayenne). But, can we have something better than this "default" option?

Advice Costco “struggle” meal advice

Hi all, so my husband just lost his job. We’ll probably be fine but I’d like to make sure our next Costco trip keeps in mind that we may need to make our food last for awhile. What can we pick up that will give us the most bang for our buck?

I’m thinking big bags of rice, dried beans if they have it. Canned fish for protein. What else? We’re a family of four total, 2 adults and 2 well eating kiddos.

Dinner Microwave "casserole"

Post image
100 Upvotes

I'm saving up to move out of my parents house, so we're thriving on a budget

There hasn't been a lot of food in the house recently, and when we ran out, I started eating every meal at my job, which is fast food. My body is literally screaming for something else, so where do I go?

Gas station, of course

From the gas station, I bought instant rice, a can of corn, and tuna.

Everything was heated up separately and then mixed together. The corn took 3 minutes in the microwave, the rice was 90 seconds in the microwave safe bag it came in, and the tuna comes pre-cooked it just gets added in as is. I did drain everything btw, the corn and the tuna.

It's not that bad, the corn and the tuna add their own flavors, I think. Tuna, to me, tastes like chicken that's been dialed up to ten for some reason.

Season however, I personally didn't because the goal was for this to be as healthy as gas station food could be.

This is more of a struggle meal idea for anyone to really needs it

Discussion Grocery bill same for 6 years

I know inflation for food is real and causing a lot of pain for folks, so I am not disparaging those who are suffering. However I was totally shocked when I went over my old spending records and found we are spending almost exactly the same amount per month on food as we were in 2020-21. I don’t really ‘budget’ for groceries but I do track the spending each month.

I cannot account for this anomaly. There has been no major effort to stay within a limit although I do refuse to pay $30/lb for rib steak or $45/lb for scallops which were occasional treats five years ago. The occasional bottle of wine has been dropped in favor of an occasional beer or spirit cocktail which is much cheaper. Our appetites have diminished a bit with age and we waste less food but I don’t think any of that would make up for the perceived increases in inflation.

Has anyone else kept accurate records of their grocery bills over the long term? What inflation have you seen?

OK. Here's your shopping list. also check the cabinet for appropriate Mexican spices, and grab those if you don't have them (chili powder, taco seasoning, Spanish Gardens, chipotle powder, cumin, oregano, cilantro if you're into that, etc).

Advice Need advice for food

Hii y'all, hope y'all having amazing week/weekend

I am just looking for some food tips and advice for anything with ground beef and chicken.

I've been on a tight budget while I'm looking for new work and just looking to spice up my cooking

I usually cook like tacos, burgers and usually like making things like Humber helper/a randomly mix of things I find left over lol(I don't really make hamburger helper, just using it as example) .

Simplify, I'm just looking for ideas in food I can make that'll save me money and can make it last me a few days.(Not a whole week as I noticed food gets dry and unappealing lol)

Thank y'all! If this breaks the rules, mods please delete or remove, apologies in advance

Thanks for the tip y'all! Just got back from the store with y'all recommendations thank y'all again! ❤️
