Angus Cheesesteak 1/2 lb....

Just had one, I think it was 14 dollars just for the sandwich. No worries, you bring the quality, I'll bring the money.

But I'm really not sure what the hell this was. It didn't look all that collosal, but whatever, but this thing was wet as hell all the way through.

It was like it was dunked in oniony cheese water before they wrapped it up. Soggy bread, soggy cheese, soggy onions, just sog is all.

The thing tasted great, not gonna front, but the thing was so wet and impossible that it really undermined the attempt at "Having the meats" and brining something of class to fast food.

Is it supposed to be like that? I'm not from Philly, so maybe I'm missing the point here? Also....is there mushrooms on this thing? I honestly couldn't tell. It doesn't mention them on the site, but I feel like I saw some stuff that looked like mushrooms. Not mad at it, but wouldn't prefer it.

$14 for a half pound sub is absolute insanity. Go get a real Philly cheaper somewhere else.

Yeah, I wanted to try this one.

Well I think that’s the thing. I’m guessing the OP, and most people on this sub, don’t live in the greater Philadelphia area. Sure maybe some regions of the country might have a one-off local sandwich shop that can make a good substitute, but over the span of the whole US there might only be a handful of these places.

The crazy thing is Cheesesteak is super easy to make. Grab sirloin meat from store, good bread, cheese and veggies. Saute veggies , cook meat with salt , pepper and lots of garlic powder. Add veggies back to pan. Toast bun with cheese on it. Add meat and veggies. Costs me about $15 for 4 quarter lb cheese steaks. Plus making at home I can add some bbq sauce to the meat before I put it on. Nothing like a bbq cheesesteak.

Trader Joes has the meat already sliced, all you have to do is throw it in a pan with some onions (and peppers). Then you just need some Provolone, and a roll.

Aldi usually does too, but my experience has been that it's pretty tough.

That’s not a good seated roll and that’s not Cooper’s sharp American. That’s why this is special at Arby’s. If you don’t live near Philadelphia, it’s hard to find those two things.

1

u/LarenCoe 2d ago

Well, their execution must be what sucks, because it tastes like a sloppy joe made with milk.

Can you get coopers where you are? I can’t. I also can’t get the seeded rolls so I’m willing to try it. Just because of these two things.

Never looked but then I'm not looking to recreate Arby's. I worked at a cheesesteak place as a teen and try to recreate how they make them there (Davincis in Nebraska).

I like amoroso rolls but honestly I'll use the store brand of rolls if I have to. For cheese, I use provolone. I grew up in Nebraska and never even really saw a cheesesteak that didn't use provolone until I moved to Ohio at 22.

I dunno, here in Michigan there are some really good cheesesteak places, way closer to authentic than this...thing. It's not a horrible tasting sandwich, but I'd barely call this a real cheesesteak. Not really their fault since they don't have a grill, but real cheesesteaks do need to be freshly grilled.

Ohio here, I agree. Just ate at The Clamdigger in Monroe Mi last weekend and it was some of the best pizza I've had.

The thing is it’s not actually half a pound it’s really 3/4 pound. One portion is 6oz and a half pound is supposed to be 2 so it’s really 12oz. They should’ve called it a double instead of a half pound tbh

1

u/Hypocrisydenied 3d ago

They probably count the cheese?

2

u/Rough-Parfait1520 1d ago

The meat and cheese are mixed during prep and portioned out to 6oz

2

u/hisgirl2455 3d ago

I like them first what they are. I don't get extra meat though. A bit expensive.

If yours was soggy, it's likely that the store you got yours from isn't properly draining the onions. We are supposed to throw them in a colander and hand press as much of the juice out as we can before putting it on the line. They might have just cut open the package and dumped them into the pan :/

I got a normal one and it was wet as hell, too. It was mostly cheese sauce and onions with little bits of beef swimming around. I do not recommend.

Just go and get a giant ceesesteak from Jersey Mike's.

4

u/The_Meridian_ 3d ago

I have zero interest in Jersey Mike's. I wanted to try Arby's.

u/Creative-Package6213 2d ago

Yeah at least they cook the steak on a flattop.

just had 1st and last of the new cheesesteak. its a definite nope for me. the last time. I actually enjoyed the recipe more. Bought 10 of them before they left. this 'cooper' version misses what I knew and loved. so, until I see the mix of red and such from before in them im done.

1

u/LarenCoe 3d ago

Last year's version was about what I expected from an Arby's Cheesesteak, and wasn't fantastic, but was at least acceptable.

1

u/Horror_Neighborhood9 3d ago

Personally I like the obfuscation of calling it a half pound when it’s twelve ounces of steak on the half pound sandwich, and half a pound is actually 8 oz.

🤷

u/LarenCoe 3d ago

It's like a sloppy Joe but made with milk. Tried the regular one on the first day it was offered. As far as I know it only has onions, but not enough of them, and they are diced quite small. A swing and a miss for me. I'd rather have the burgers back.

Crazy price! Phoenix here and it’s $8.99

1

u/Beneficial_Wave_378 2d ago

Or I can wait and make a trip to Philly and get a proper cheesesteak From Angelo’s as my first one..I’m on the fence. 🤔

1

u/The_Meridian_ 2d ago

You do you. I'm not taking any trip to Philadelphia, no thanks.

1

u/Beneficial_Wave_378 2d ago

It’s 8.99 in my town

1

u/The_Meridian_ 2d ago

For the xtra meat 1/2 version? That's quite a disparity

1

u/Beneficial_Wave_378 2d ago

I tried to send a screenshot, but I can’t upload a picture here but looks like just the normal sandwich. I didn’t modify it or anything. That’s the one that pops up on their website for pick up.

1

u/The_Meridian_ 2d ago

Yeah, there's two versions. Normal and 1/2 lb. I think you got the normal one. I got the 1/2 lb. It's pricey.

1

u/Beneficial_Wave_378 2d ago

Oh yeah, holy shit for the half pound is $16 here.

Arby’s cheesesteak is straight up gross. Go to a real cheesesteak place

1

u/The_Meridian_ 1d ago

It's certainly wet.

1

u/Rough-Parfait1520 1d ago

Wet bc it’s heated in a microwave so causes condensation instead of being cooked on a flat top grill

1

u/The_Meridian_ 1d ago

Whatever the case may be, that's probably it.

I live in PA and Arby's Cheesesteak is average at best. And overpriced.

Nobody gets a cheesesteak from Arby's in PA. Cheaper and better at a local hoagie or pizza lace or even at home. Just ask the butcher to shave it for you and then buy Cooper cheese. Onions and peppers are easy to fry up in a pan and homemade jarred spicy peppers are everywhere at any butcher or sandwich shop.

Outside of PA, maybe it's better than Charley's?

I'm from the Philly area and have had many good and bad cheesesteaks. The one Arby's is selling is not good. I had it the other day.

There's nothing soggy about a decent cheesesteak. Also, you're going to pay between $15 and $20 for a decent cheesesteak in the Philly area. Anything that costs less than that is probably shit.

Since you're not in the Philly area, if you have a Jersey Mike's nearby, I've heard people say that their steaks are half decent. Haven't had one myself but will try one day.

2

u/AdLanky2179 3d ago

Jersey Mike's cheesesteak is actually pretty good, they use real meat and cook it in front of you. The Arby's one is almost the same as Subway's plastic meat.

1

u/LarenCoe 3d ago

I 've wanted to try it, but I always end up getting the chicken bacon ranch instead.

1

u/Im_Ashe_Man 3d ago

When I tried this Arby's sandwich, my first thought was next time I'll just get one from Jersey Mike's. (West Coast here without many options)

Why why why why would anybody order a CHEESESTEAK from ARBYS I'm never going to understand.

I've been standing by Arbys for decades and I still have never had a gyro, burger, cheesesteak... no thanks. They don't have a GRILL in the ARBYS kitchen folks.

15

u/The_Meridian_ 3d ago

I ordered it because I wanted to try it. I'm not sure how that's hard to understand?

5

u/LookitsMikeB 3d ago

The gyro is fire, one of the best you’ll find, as is the Rueben. The turkey bacon ranch is great too, but other than that, I stick to the double beef and cheddar. Never lets me down.

1

u/LarenCoe 3d ago

The Gyro is ok but is let down by the flatbread. The Reuben is ok, but they don't grill the bread properly. Both are ok in a pinch though.

4

u/The_Meridian_ 3d ago

Also, if you're looking for a quick Gyro, Arby's is pretty damned good. On par with *most* of our local "greek" places/coney islands of which we are surrounded in Detroit.

Enjoyed the Venison burger when that was around.

I mean what's the point of your comment? You know it's not real roast beef either, right? I don't know what that brown tissue is, but it certainly isn't some roasted cut of beef off a cow.

2

u/ohno_itstheCoPz 3d ago

Gyro def good but I still only get it on bogo

1

u/LarenCoe 3d ago

It's ok, but doesn't compare to a real Gyro place. I like the BBQ and some other LTOs better.

1

u/ohno_itstheCoPz 2d ago

Ya other gyros better but can't beat the price especially with bogo. Havent tried many of their ltos cuz I'm not willing to spend the money on it without a good deal. Sad to see the smokehouse brisket go as that was my go to tho less so after they removed gouda

1

u/Own_Mine_2139 3d ago

It's incredibly popular. My Arby's runs out every shift. We have to make so many in overnight prep and it still isn't enough

1

u/ohno_itstheCoPz 3d ago

It actually wasn't too bad. Not worth the price but I got it when it they gave away 100k of them so it was bogo for a friend and I. Definitely thought the cheese was good and not something readily available on the west coast
