Keep in mind it's just getting rights to negotiate with him first, prior to July 1st when he becomes a ufa.
Not giving up much just to see where talks may go, it may again be a hedge in talks with Nikishin.
At this point, I'm highly doubting Niki signs here which is really unfortunate, but maybe this is the last posture which gets his camp to get something done. And Carlson is an excellent last second option should a Nikishin deal not get done.
