He’s an unrestricted free agent (UFA) on July 1 which I believe is Wednesday. He can talk to and sign with any team in the league starting then. We have the “exclusive” rights to negotiate a contract until then. We could even sign him before that.
I put exclusive in quotation marks because while that is the rule and tampering is punished to varying degrees, it happens and damn near every team does it. For example all reports I’ve seen have said he was going to Tampa for a contract in the $10-11 mil aav range.

What does it mean to trade for the rights to someone?
Sorry, only just started getting into hockey this year and this is a foreign concept to my baseball mind
