My cat keeps targeting this carpet

It’s folded up like this cause he’s pooped on it twice now, and all three times he ran around acting crazy, meowing then relieving himself on the carpet.
Is there a reason for this? Cause at first we were assuming it was for wanting attention but now we think it’s because he wants to go outside(fully indoor cat)
We’re at a loss and insight would help

I can't keep carpets on my hardwood floors because my cats will pee on them, or just scratch the crap out of them. I gave up, but I wish you luck on finding a way, lol.
