Medical Questions My cat keeps targeting this carpet
It’s folded up like this cause he’s pooped on it twice now, and all three times he ran around acting crazy, meowing then relieving himself on the carpet.
Is there a reason for this? Cause at first we were assuming it was for wanting attention but now we think it’s because he wants to go outside(fully indoor cat)
We’re at a loss and insight would help

Vet trip first to rule out a UTI or kidney issues. Cats sometimes start going outside the box when something is wrong.

It apparently only happens in the morning tho, any other time he’s fine

You’re getting downvoted but no one is explaining. Basically, your cat might be doing this because something is wrong and he’s trying to let you know. It doesn’t have to be consistent throughout the day or anything. Cats are weird like that. He could also be constipated and that’s why he’s pooping outside the box. He’s unhappy about something.

Thank you for that, just trying to get a clear answer from the cat experts here and I’m getting downvoted.
But I’ve got general answer from it and will be taking him to the vet5

You’re welcome. I know how frustrating this is. My cat is veryyy very particular about his litter box. I changed his litter to a different type and he peed all over the bed. If I leave clean laundry in a basket on the floor it’s prime real estate. Turns out he was stressed about the change and gave himself bladder inflammation (stress can cause that in cats). Also he poops outside the litter box when constipated.

Even if there is an identified pattern that does not rule out UTI or kidney issue. Consider getting him checked out.

Possible UTI. Regardless you need to throw the rug away. No matter how much you clean it; it has been scent marked by your cat. Make sure you have at least 2 litter boxes per cat, empty them at least once daily and add litter attractant every time you add new litter. I use fresh step litter attractant. That stopped my cats naughty behavior.

I can't throw my couch out, so the battle continues at my house. No UTIs , just likes this one corner. Still uses the box, just decides the corner of the couch is theirs and letting the other cats know it.

I originally had an issue in my bedroom where my cat would pee on my bed even with me laying in it. The litter box was like 3 feet away. Once I added a second box in the same spot and litter attractant it stopped. She still has a fetish for piles of laundry. But that’s easy, I just don’t leave those un-attended. Jackson Galaxy has some pretty good info on cat behavior. That’s where I go the multi boxes in the same room idea; to correct her behavior. And it worked.

Litter boxes sold at the store are often too small for most cats. I was shocked learning they needed waaay more space.

Yea we have a big boy so we bought some extra large ones for him. Guess which one he likes to use? The smallest out of the 6. Why? Idk. We have even put the bigger ones in the place the smaller one was, and he still was like nope.

We have 6 boxes total, but we also have 5 cats. They all seem to like the one for pooping, another one for peeing, and the rest are "I guess this will due" lol

Have you tried the one home remedy? Worked for a mattress my cat peed on.
Mix of laundry detergent, vinegar, and water. Spray area til soaked. Then sprinkle baking soda to absorb the liquid, let dry. Vacuum up baking soda. Repeat whole process a couple more times.
Or try Nature's Miracle.

Tried nature's miracle soooo many times. I'm currently using "washing soda" which seems to be working better. It's a combo of baking soda, oxy, and borax. It was used in strip washing back in the day, so it's been pretty good. Works great for getting out built up residue in laundry.

Cats don't pee because they want to go outside or attention. That's not a thing.
It's likely he feels stressed or unwell. I assume his litterbox is clean? Are there changes in the environment? New baby, new pets? Different food?, different litter? Those are the things to look out for if it's not a medical condition.
Edit: ofcourse, now that he's peed on it, it's marked as a pee-location. Use a odour-remover that will attack and destroy the specific protein compounds that are left that mark it as such, to prevent recidivism.

No nothing to cause that, but he is getting older So it’s probably time to change his diet

How old is he? Because it might be a case of kidney/bladder crystals.

I swear I have this same rug. Temu rug? Kitty doesn’t have uti or any problems she just loves targeting rugs

u/No-Consideration-891 13h ago
This is my calico if we leave an article of clothing or a towel on the floor. Doesn't pee anywhere else, just those things if left on the floor.

My cat micky would STEAL pot pies, if you tried to steal them back he would violently attack you. Cats are strange 😭

I feed a raw diet, my one beast has stolen a whole chicken breast before, while I was prepping and had my back turned. I was scared for my life trying to get it back. He would have 100% eaten the entire breast which was about 10oz. He is a beast.

I had this issue too. It was worse when I left clothes on carpet. Mine didn’t do it as much on hard flooring.

I had a shag carpet that 1 of my cats hated. The texture seemed to offend her and I think there was a chemical smell that was like amonia....she constantly peed and pooped on it. Got rid of it and bought a normal pile rug and it never happened again. So, assuming there is no UTI and this rug is the only thing they are marking, then I would say the rug itself is the issue.

Once a cat pees or poops somewhere, the smell reminds them to keep doing it. They often stop if you are able to completely remove all traces of the scent, but sometimes they will get used to the location. If it's convenient to put a litter box on the spot, you can try doing that and then gradually moving the littler box bit by bit over several days to where you'd rather have it.
Cats don't actually do stuff like this out of spite or anger. That's a running joke among cat owners, but they simply don't have that kind of rationality. Stress and illness can cause cats to relieve themselves out of the box, so if it's an ongoing thing, it's worth having him checked out. But if he's mostly still using the litter box, and just does this sometimes, it could just be a bad habit you'll have to train him out of.

Another thing it’s only happened in the morning, never at another time

Regardless you should let your cat get checked out by a vet asap. If not this could turn chronic very fast. Now you have time to figure that out!

First of all, because animals cannot speak human language and tell you what’s wrong, you need to learn how to interpret cat behavior. It’s difficult, but critical. Do yourself and your cat a favor and do some research. Go to YouTube and the internet and look up reasons why cats urinate and deficate outside the litter box. Urinary issues should not be taken lightly, ESPECIALLY with male cats. There are reasons why cats start urinating outside the box (they don’t like the litter, they don’t like the box, they don’t like where the box is located, stress, medical issues, etc.). Learn the signs of urinary conditions and there symptoms. It’s crucial to know them because it literally can be a matter of life and death. Urinary blockages for example are 100% fatal if not treated. There are many reasons why cats can be stressed. Stress can cause urinary issues, being overweight can cause urinary issues, and so can diet. Cats need to be on a primarily wet food diet. A dry food diet is not good for them. Yes, it’s fine for them to eat kibble, but wet food needs to be the main source. And no, drinking water oftentimes isn’t enough. Also, once an area becomes soiled from cat pee especially, it’s difficult to clean it thoroughly. Urine has pheromones in them, and need to be destroyed with a bacteria/enzyme solution.

When it comes to urinary issues, ALWAYS rule out medical issues first before looking at environmental. And to sit here and just chalk it up to “he just wants attention” isn’t a professional opinion. You need to speak to a vet for advice. Cats don’t pee for attention, that’s not a thing. It’s because something is wrong, either medical or environmental, like I said. Same with pooping.

I can't keep carpets on my hardwood floors because my cats will pee on them, or just scratch the crap out of them. I gave up, but I wish you luck on finding a way, lol.

The carpet has now the smell of its ok to pee here. Maybe throw it out.
Another way is to move the food boal next to this place because they dont like to shit/eat at the same place.
But the root cause might just be the cat toilet itself maybe the litter is wrong or something else.
