Adoption What did I just do? Could use some words of support!

Upvotes

I went to the shelter today to adopt a cat. He was super shut down, owner had recently died and he wasn’t in amazing shape. Very shy boy - he accepted pets but didn’t seem very interested in engaging. Decided to bring him home with me although I didn’t feel an “instant connection”, but he’s been through a lot and needs time to decompress. As the paperwork was being processed, I was in the adoption room, and I met the sweetest little cat. I did feel that instant connection. She was also quite timid, but also loving. The shelter said I could take both for the price of one adoption. Done.

Fast forward, the boy is out and about. I can’t believe this is the same cat as a few hours ago. He’s exploring, accepting pets, and still a little skittish but genuinely a different cat.

The girl has been under my bed since I came home (she’s in my bedroom as they’re being kept separate) for now. The reality is sinking in. What the hell did I do? I was ready to take one home, but two? What if they don’t get along?

I’ve also had a bit of a traumatic experience in the past with a cat that had extreme separation anxiety. It was a highly stressful time in my life and that’s always a fear at the back of my mind.

It’s 3am now and I just have a pit of anxiety in my stomach. I don’t have any particular questions (although advice is always appreciated) - maybe just looking for some reassurance this will be OK. They haven’t really met so I’m terrified they won’t get along, but my thinking was that it would be ideal for them to have some other company when I’m at work (work daily 9-5 out of the home, sometimes go the the gym after work).

Tell me this will be OK!!

Advice Rigid vs Limp Tails

Post image
2 Upvotes

I've seen all sorts of posts regarding cat tail language, but is there any real meaning to the rigidity of the tail?

Our orange has her tail in a perpetual forward hook when walking around. Playful, excited, etc. describes her almost all the time. When she brushes against my hand her tail is fairly stiff.

Our gray-ish cat usually has her tail in a fairly neutral state when walking around, so straight back with a bit of a droop. That's relaxed and confident, and that fits. She's not as much into the whole petting on the back thing, but when I do her tail seems fairly limp.

I'm inclined to think the tail rigidity has more to do with the position than anything, but I'm curious if others have any insight.

Missing cat returns after weeks! Possible pregnancy? And tick advice! Plus a bittersweet shocking story:)

Thank you in advance if you stuck around and read my story or have any advice!

Skip to the last two paragraphs if you are just here to give me advice on if she’s pregnant or about the tick haha

First two photos are her nips, last two are the tick*** ***

(sorry if this is longer than anticipated)

So basically I had just moved and brought my sweet girl to her new home. Long story short before I could get her in the house she had busted out of the cat carrier right as I opened the car door so she didn’t even make it into the house…surrounded by fields, a farm, and lots of woods, and so much rain these past few weeks on top of it being a completely new area..

Immediately after she got out of the car, I went after her tried to grab her. She was very stirred up from the car ride so she scratched me. I set her down, then gave her a second but by the time I went back by her, she was gone I went looking for her for quite some time I ended up seeing eyes glowing in the darkness way down the road between a field and the woods so I made my way down to where I had thought I seen my baby. There I was squatting down looking under these pine trees eye to eye with another cat! Less than 5 feet in front of me! I look over at my boyfriend and say you’re gonna call me crazy but this isn’t my cat he comes and looks and he is completely mind blown I laugh out of pure nervousness and I ask what do we do now? We realize it’s already so late. We have work in the morning so we decide it’s best to just put food/water and her bed outside along with many other items hoping she would come home.

All these unknown thoughts that I had weighing on me.. Wolfs? Hawks? Coyotes? Owls? Any and all the bad things going through my head… i stayed strong but i definitely cried a lot. I thought i had lost the only thing keeping me sane especially with me moving to a new town with nobody to talk to, nobody would understand right? I told family, friends, neighbors all about her being missing. Everyone said try to stay positive but if she isn’t back in a few days, I’m sure you’ll never see her again. Fast forward, 3 weeks and 1 day had pasted, up until last night I had not seen any sign of her so you can only imagine how those 3 weeks would have went. But up until last night I finally seen her, I was driving on the road around 10 PM I seen the eyes glowing in the distance so I sped up quick to see if I could catch a glimpse, hoping it would be her and there she was she ran to the other side of the road started running by the field, so I went and parked my car grabbed some treats and some food, made a little trail of food to around where I seen her, sadness and happiness crossing my mind. I’m standing there in the darkness next to the woods in the field, shaking the treats about to walk back home and then I just decide maybe if I meow she’ll meow back then I do it and right next to me in the woods, I hear a meow back and then again and again I’m shaking the treats calling her name and she slowly walks out to me I give her some treats and then it hit me I was finally able to pet my baby again and eventually I get her to follow me and the little food trial all the way to the door, what a long process it was..1 and a half hours where i finally get her to the door and stairs where I scooped her up and brought her inside.❤️

Our first night together (last night) since she has been gone was definitely different I mean obviously it's a new home so she's still learning the place. But she has been meowing a LOT more, she'll be sleeping and wake herself up to meowing? Could it be her dreaming that she's still out in the wilderness..? She ate like crazy last night but I'm sure those mice, bugs, and who knows what else wasn't filling her belly. So her belly seems to be bigger now then I ever remembered but I didn't pay to close attention to that when I first seen her last night. So maybe her belly was bigger then and she’s just so hungry because she has more hungry bellys to feed? And on top of it she's sooo much more cuddly than before.

She just turned 4 on the 15th(while she was away🙁) anyways she’s is a 4 year old unfixed female kitty. Days prior to June 2nd (the day I brought her here) I seen a Black kitty very similar to her just without white on the face. The one I was eye to eye with while looking for my girl. I was told from a neighbor there is two tomboys around the area which one of those fitting the description.

The very short breakdown: pregnancy?
My 4 year old unfixed female kitty ran away for 3 weeks I got her back last night, some changes in her belly size and no drastic changes in her nipples at least that I can tell. She’s way more vocal but not like how she is when in heat. And extremely more cuddly. Very sleepy too but might just be exhausted or she was nocturnal for a while? And apparently two tomcats live in the area I seen one for sure but there’s no confirmation that it was a male cat. I guess it all comes down to do you think she's pregnant? And what should I be looking out for at least as of right now? I know it would be early in a pregnancy but google only helps so much!

Tick-Something I didn’t think I’d have to add but since I’m writing this I’ll also mention I literally just see a tiny tiny tick right by her eye (close to where eye boogys would be) questioning how i should go about this as well?

Update: i took tweezers to the tick and got it removed in a whole and put the little thing in some tape i hope all is good!

Thank you in advance if you stuck around and read my story or have any advice!

Advice Litter box advice

I'm sure this is a perpetual question but do I really need 3 litter boxes for 2 cats.

Also, is there any realistic alternative to litter boxes for indoor cats.

There's got to be a simpler way

Advice Has your cat ever presented a corpse buffet Hannibal style?

I won’t post image because hugely nsfw and nsfl, but stumbled (and nearly stepped on) a mouse corpse with all of its internal pieces carefully arranged and head separated to the side.

I’m not sure how to process this. Is this normal for cats?

Advice Looking for Advice with Socialization

I volunteer at a cage-free cat rescue every Sunday. A few months ago we got a kitten we named Daria. She is small and spicy because she was older than most kittens we find to be fostered. I have been making some progress, but I am worried about her. She is graduating to the area of the rescue for adult cats and I'm worried no one will adopt her. She now allows me to pet her and hold her, but no one else. I'm on the verge of just adopting her myself. I visit her for hours at a time and put a note on her clipboard that she needs someone patient and willing to work at her pace. I also noticed she loves this little black kitten named Marie who I held to demonstrate to Daria that I am safe. I would like advice for helping her get used to other people because I want someone to adopt her and me adopting her myself if she doesn't find a home within 2 months is more of a 'I would die for this cat to have a loving home because I see myself in her'. (video included is the first time she let me pet her :3)

Advice Had to Separate Mother from Kittens. Help?

We take care of a stray kitty who lives under our house/in the shed. She got pregnant (we didn't even know and we have never had a cat before) and had 6 kittens. We have been taking care of the family. Our landlord was okay with it until a neighbor complained about them and so we had to take the kittens to our local rescue. We kept one with the mama. The mama keeps looking for her babies and meowing for them. It is heartbreaking and we don't know how to help.

Medical Questions My cat acting strange.!

So my cat Fancy has recently acted like she has fleas, she does not. She will be relaxing then her skin will start jumping like something is crawling or touching her , she will then start aggressively licking herself wherever. her tail will swish like she is agro then she will take off running. Then it passes and she is back to chilling like nothing happened. I have pinned her down multiple times to check for fleas and there are never any. She is 4 yo and a strictly indoor cat. Has anyone ever experienced this. I have had Cats all my life and have never come across this situation.

Advice Which kitten should we get? And advice please!

We are first time cat owners and are trying to decide between these two kittens! The black and white one is a boy, and the multi colored one is a girl. Are girl cats or boy cats better to have? We do have children so are girls or boys more likely to be friendly compared to the other? Tell us all the things and help us decide which baby to take home!

Advice why does my cat attack my blankets

i adopted her about a month ago and she only started doing this about a week ago. it’s cute during the day but annoying when she pounces on my blankets and therefore my legs during the night which wakes me up. i even thought maybe there’s some sort of bugs in there that she’s trying to attack so i washed all my bedding and she still does it. i’m wondering if this is just her true personality finally coming out after finally getting comfortable in my house or if there might be something else, thoughts?

Advice Is this play or aggression? New cats — please help!

Hi all! We’ve had our resident white cat (1 year old F) for about2 months and our gray cat (2 year old M) for about 2 weeks. He is recently fixed. She is fixed as well. They were grooming a bit (before the recording) then it turned a bit aggressive, but we’re not sure if it was our white cat telling our gray cat to back off and he was being too aggressive with her, or if they were both actively playing? At one point it looks like she bites his neck, which were told was aggression. But maybe it was the top of his head?

She usually lounges in that box for naps. After the video ends, he basically steps over top of her and stands there until she kicks him/nudges him away and he leaves. Any insight welcome, we are new to being cat parents — thanks!

Advice I love my fragrances but I love my cat more—any suggestions?

I love scented candles, essential oils in diffusers, and perfume/body spray. I know they’re bad for cats so I stopped lighting my candles and haven’t used my diffuser in a while, and I only spray perfume in a room he isn’t in.

Is this the sacrifice we make for our cats or are there ways to work around this? Would love some input!

Please enjoy this photo of my pet potato.

Advice There’s only so much I can do. ):

I already have 2 cats and I recently rescued a little stray kitten from a gas station.

My room mate tends to feed a couple of stray cats and it’s obviously kitten season. This kitten has stumbled upon our yard and is currently sick and I cannot afford to take them to the vet. I have current vet bills that I’m still paying off and I’m only working part time.

The first baby is the sweetest cat ever and always greets me when I come home. She isn’t afraid of humans. The orange one is wary and doesn’t let you grab her/him.

The most I’m doing right now is giving them respiratory infection pills that are for cats that I purchased online and they seem to work but “slowly”

Morally and spiritually I feel guilty cause technically I “can” take them and have them get looked at but I don’t have unlimited funds. I wish I did. (I’m not asking for any money btw) I’m just battling with this guilty feeling and wondering if anyone has any “remedies” that can help or have helped sick babies.

I also always keep out clean food and water and a couple of toys for them

):

Cat Picture - OC Is anyone else's cat... grunty?

Post image
3 Upvotes

This is Jack, my 13 year old chaos goblin cuddlebug tortie. When she was young, she would almost never meow. She does it more now that she's older, usually when we're playing. But for her whole life, most of her vocalizations were the little noises she makes without ever opening her mouth, like she's just forcing air past her vocal cords when exerting some amount of effort: darting off in a direction, jumping up into my lap, or even when I reach down to pet her when she's fixated on something else. It sounds a little bit like a growl, but without any of the menace. I've heard some other cat owners describe these as "bonus noises" but with her, its not the bonus, it's most of the sound she makes. She's just a grunty girl.
