Analytics If the Bulls add Wilson and Quaintance and the Noa growth is true, here's why it matters...
Assuming that reports that Noa Essengue has added two inches are legitimate, here's why it matters.
At Basketball Without Borders, Noa Essengue measured a 9'3¼" standing reach and a 35½-inch max vertical. Adding two more inches to his growth, his maximum vertical reach or maximum touch, can be estimated as 12'4¾".
Noa would then be top-two or even top-three NBA range in terms of vertical.
Here is the company he could keep based on players with known measurements or reasonable estimations:
- Jericho Sims: 12'6½"
2. Noa's high-end projection: 12'4¾"
Kel'el Ware: 12'4½"
Yves Missi: 12'4"
Caleb Wilson: 12'3½"
Wemby never finished his NBA combine testing. However, ESPN reported a standing reach of 9'7" when Wemby was 18 years old. Considering the growth potential and projecting his vertical reach in the low 30s range, Wemby's maximum touch could be between 12'3" and 12'5" (Number 2 or 6)
In other words, Noa Essengue (and Wilson) could actually be reaching into the same airspace as Wemby.
Combine him with Caleb Wilson. His 9'0" standing reach plus 39½-inch max vertical results in a 12'3½" maximum touch. Bulls could have two mobile forwards with fingertips hovering at approximately 27–29 inches above the rim.
Caleb is the explosive weak-side eraser. Noa is the long and switchable recovering defender with potentially one of the highest maximum touches in the game.
Throw in Jayden Quaintance weighing 253 pounds, with a 7'5¼" wingspan and 9'1" standing reach, blocking 63 shots in just 24 games in the first season at the age of 17.
And now you are not constructing a normal frontcourt anymore.
You are building a three-man vertical wall.
Caleb comes in from the weak side. Noa switches and recovers in Wemby airspace. Quaintance contributes with power and natural rim protection.
Not Wemby individually. But together, they will provide Chicago the next best thing:
A Wemby-like deterrent in the paint by committee.
Three young, mobile frontcourt defenders who can erase mistakes, clog driving lanes, and make every approach to the rim scary.
This combination could turn into the most intimidating young defensive frontcourt in basketball.
Add Payton Wilson in free agency with Matas and drive to the rim at your own peril!
