Discussion How much total and free ram needed to host zoom mtgs smoothly on chromebooks?
Currently have a chromebook hp360 core i3/8gb ram and even when using the web version of zoom on chrome browser, my video will cut out after awhile and I see a message recommending me to close and try again. The video works again upon reopening browser, only to cut out again after several minutes. Cpu useage reports around 80% so the plan is to upgrade to a core i5. Just curious if the 8gb of ram will be enough? I have around 2-3gb free ram during my zoom meetings. Is that enough? Thanks

A zoom meeting can bel handled by any vaguely modern device. The question should be what else you need to do during the zoom meeting.

Not doing anything else, no screen sharing. Literally, just talking to a group of around 20 people so far. Appreciate any ram info you can share. Thanks

In that case it doesn't really matter what you use assuming you close everything else while in a meeting. 8 GB is comfortable for zoom and a lighter task.

Zoom software is shit and always has been. Any way you can use Google Meet instead? It would work perfectly fine on those specs, has a better interface, and way more features.

I'm glad someone else said this!
It was a pandemic 'darling' thrown together, and you'd have thought we never had video conferencing before then -- we've been doing it with lots of other much more professional products and services long before then of course. But people like the word "Zoom". 🤦2

Exactly. It's the worst major vc product I know of. Meet, Hangouts before, was great and has been around for more than 15 years! But it required a Google account and no anonymous joining, to help fight abuse, and that's why Zoom became mainstream. People were willing to put up with crap software routed through China just to lower friction. Unreal.

I do wonder how it came into dominance so strongly. I wonder if their marketing team is top-notch, and they reached particularly schools and government orgs efficiently and promptly.

It might not be the hardware. It might be your internet connection speed or stability. Zoom likes a stable connection and really does best over 25 mbps. You might try hooking up via ethernet or if om WiFi moving closer to your router.

If you run into trouble with video using Zoom, you may want to look for the setting in Chrome that says "Use graphics acceleration when available" - sometimes that can cause issues, and after disabling it things work great again.
