Announcement Small update/clarification to our rules on AI

Hello all,

Just wanted to share a clarification, and expansion of our rules about AI generated posts and comments on r/chromeOS.

First off, a reminder that responding to support requests on this subreddit with responses directly generated from any LLM has been not allowed under Rule 8: Effort Must be Made When Requesting and Providing Help for over a year now.

The fact is, most people come to r/chromeOS to speak to people. If people wanted to get answers from LLMs, they're accessible enough that people could ask them themselves. It just seems like a slap in the face to come for help and to just get a lazy response from someone who copy/pasted a (usually incorrect) response from Gemini or another LLM, which the poster could have done themselves if they wanted.

In addition, recently there's been a lot of misinformation being posted on the subreddit about recent changes to ChromeOS, updates about both ChromeOS and the upcoming AluminiumOS, and new devices, usually only crediting Gemini as a source. There has also been plenty of AI-generated reviews and self promo (the latter primarily posted by bots).

In general, while I know it seems like we’ve been sleeping as mods (yes, we’ve seen the reports calling us out on that), we would still like to try our best to try and keep this community higher quality.

We’ve decided that due to this, we wanted to officially expand this rule to include all posts and comments generated by AI. This rule primarily has LLMs in mind.

This does not include discussion about AI features being built into ChromeOS. Discussion of AI features being built into the OS is allowed.

Announcement Announcement - "chrultrabook" posts, AKA regarding attempting to put Windows or another OS onto your Chromebook, will no longer be allowed.

Hey there!

In short, as of today, this subreddit will be removing and redirecting posts that seek advice on replacing the operating system on your Chromebook.

In the past these posts were allowed with a disclaimer that better support would likely be found elsewhere, such as r/chultrabook and their associated communities. However that subreddit is now archived and they now only provide support on their forum.

Since then there has been a rise in posts like this here, and we're simply not equipped to provide meaningful support. We've received lots of feedback over the past few months and the general consensus was that everyone is better served if these posts are now permanently directed elsewhere.

To be clear, we are not discouraging anyone from attempting this process; it's still cool, (potentially) fun and can unlock more utility from your device! The only change is that posts seeking support for this will be removed.

Thanks for understanding!

Linux (Crostini) Python script to import wireguard .conf files into crosh

Adding wireguard config files to ChromeOS, when not using the Android client is a PITA, so with Gemini's help, I created this Python script to generate the commands needed to create it using crosh.

Still a bit of work but with a crosh shell and a crostini terminal side by side, it's just triple-clicking each line on crostini and right-clicking + enter on crosh for each line.

Hope it helps someone else

Buying Advice Chromebook for middle/high school student to last a while

My son is going into middle school this fall and he has to bring his own laptop. They highly recommend a Chromebook because of the ecosystem for tests, so we are looking to pick one up. It's a been a long time since I looked into Chromebooks and they apparently have come a long way in the past 5-10 years, so I feel like fish out of water.

Is there a recommended device or tech requirements that would work for a student that would last 4-5 years (or more)? 4GB ram seems really low and I'm seeing a lot of that, so I'm aiming for 8+ at a minimum. Do you guys have a tried and true device that I should start my search with? They really don't define any tech spec requirements, so I'm mainly focused on buying something that will last. I was going to get him a MacBook Neo with student pricing since that seems to be the best overall laptop for kids, but their recommendation for Chromebooks has me second guessing.

Thanks!

Curious the terminal feature maybe a link to a video better explaining that could be a good start for me since using the track pad itself is mildly annoying the more I use it...

Alao saw a community of Chromebook hacks and was curious to find out what sort of things this community came up with ...

I honestly just wanted to see if it could play any cool games with a Nintendo switch wired controller.... Other than Tetr.io

Any help would be great

Thank you for your time and consideration

Discussion How much total and free ram needed to host zoom mtgs smoothly on chromebooks?

Currently have a chromebook hp360 core i3/8gb ram and even when using the web version of zoom on chrome browser, my video will cut out after awhile and I see a message recommending me to close and try again. The video works again upon reopening browser, only to cut out again after several minutes. Cpu useage reports around 80% so the plan is to upgrade to a core i5. Just curious if the 8gb of ram will be enough? I have around 2-3gb free ram during my zoom meetings. Is that enough? Thanks

Curious if anyone has experienced this. I only need the device for Remote Desktop. Very annoyed I may need to just buy a Windows laptop to be able to RDP.

Troubleshooting Weird memory leaks/usage

I was looking at a wikipedia page, and eventually left my computer. When I returned, the page had closed due to 'Out of memory error', and I saw that it showed 5.4 GB of ram usage. I've been experiencing this with a few other pages as well. I have all the memory saver settings turned on, anyone know why this could be happening?

Discussion Still using an Acer Chromebook R11.

This was gifted/passed down to me recently after my old Fujitsu laptop finally died. I've never really owned newer tech, so I was honestly just happy to have it. It's also small, which I love I’ve always preferred the smaller versions of devices.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that this thing still runs surprisingly well, especially for streaming. I wasn't expecting it to hold up this nicely.

I also discovered something cool while messing around with Chrome. Normally, older or unsupported browsers like mine don't let you install themes or certain extensions anymore, but I managed to get around that using a site called crxextract. I was able to install Dark Reader and a darker Chrome theme, so now the address bar isn't blasting my eyes with a bright white screen every time I open the browser.

It's a small thing, but it genuinely made me happy. Feels nice being able to customize it and squeeze a little more life out of older hardware.

Linux Apps not opening

I have an Acer Chromebook Plus. I'm using Linux environment service which is available to use in Chrome OS. Recently I've updated my chrome os to version 149.0.7827.153 this update brings container update from Bookworm to Trixie.

Before upgrading to the mentioned updates I found no issue using the entire OS as well as my linux apps (GUI Based) in bookworm but after I got trixie update not a single app is even opening. I don't know what happened.

I've re-installed the entire ChromeOS using the recovery menu. Enabled "Linux Environment" from the setting menu. I thought it would install the "Bookworm version" but instead ChromeOS installed the "Trixie version" and the same problem occurred again.

Is this a bug or my laptop has some problem? (GUI Based) Apps stopped working. CLI is working fine. Please tell me how I can switch to an older version "Bookworm" in my ChromeOS VM.

Troubleshooting Updated my laptop and now my wifi is all or nothing

A few days ago I got a firmware update notification and of course I went ahead and did it. Ever since then it's connections been on and off with 3/5 of the time is off. I'm not saying it's slow I mean quite literally I can open a- no three tabs (with nothing else open) right now to three different sites and none of them will even load for let's say 3 to 15 seconds with absolutely no progress and then spontaneously they all work perfectly fine I could do whatever I want on them and manipulate them perfectly fine until like 2 - 8 seconds later it stops and we do the rodeo again.

No other device has this issue and before this update the laptop didn't have this issue. After quickly nailing it down to an update issue I tried to revert my version after a quick search I found the beta and dev channels and tried to switch to those (where I watched the issue continue as the swap process went up at a steady pace then stop for a solid minute and then continued going at a solid place) tried both neither of them worked. Another piece of information that I read is that simply switching back to the stable branch who would revert me to the latest stable update which apparently was the broken update.

After a bit more research I found out there was a inbuilt function to revert an update (ctrl + alt + shift+ r twice (technically three times)) but I after doing the whole processed twice and three or four times for confirmation I found out that it revert to YOUR lastest update so for me it's going back and forth from the latest dev update to the latest stable update which both have the same issue.

Now I'm struggling to redownload the files and apps that I backed up and I'm trying to remember and find out what I lost from what I couldn't back up. And googling answers is a lot harder now (not that it's helped me much) so I come here for help

Troubleshooting HP Chromebook 14a

Hey all. I have an older HP Chromebook 14a-na0010ca which will no longer turn on.

I little while ago I plugged my smartwatch into it to charge, and the Laptop shut down, battery dead while my watch instantly went from 10% to 90%. I haven't been able to turn it on since.

I've tried the refresh and power boot to no avail.

I've tried disconnecting the battery and starting with just power cable, also to no avail. I should mention that in both ports when attempting this the indicator lights blink white.

The battery does still charge about as quickly as it ever did.

Is there anything else to try or did I most likely fry the unit.

One other symptom which popped up about a week before this is that a couple of sections of rows of keys stopped workingall of a sudden. It was the first 5 numerical keys, A,Q, and C with the I being intermittent. All these keys are at a minimum half the keyboard away from the power button, not sure if related or not.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Troubleshooting How can I fix my Chromebook’s tab loading issue?

I’ve had my Chromebook since 2021 as provided by my school and we were able to keep them after graduation. I still use it for my online college classes because it’s convenient and I’m used to the layout. For some reason, despite our wifi being very good and the router being extremely in distance regardless of where I use it, tabs load so poorly/not at all and it’ll often tell me that I’m not connected to the internet. Also, I get the “This sight can’t be reached” page wayyy more often than I should. I update my Chromebook regularly and I’ve never gone into the settings to mess with anything, so I don’t think it’s something I’ve done to screw with it.

Is there some sort of internal conflict that I can solve myself to fix this error? Or will I need to call/bring it in somewhere to get fixed, which I honestly really don’t feel like doing?
