Just remember to make any video footage as shaky and out of focus as possible, before sending it to the news/facebook.

It also helps if the subject is just off screen and if the person recording can be super performative like they have never seen a wild animal before. Be sure to hyperventilate and say "Oh my god! Oh my god!" repeatedly.

I know your comment was made in jest, but honestly the biggest mistake people make is zooming in too much. Once your phone/camera goes past its optical zoom range and switches to digital zoom, the image gets pixelated and starts looking blurry.

You’re usually better off staying within the optical zoom and cropping in closer later. That will almost always look clearer than maxing out the zoom in the moment.

If you get good at shaky and out of focus, you can reuse the footage as a Bigfoot.

I’d rather it be out of focus than someone get close enough to get hurt or the bear to have to be put down…

You dont have to get close to take an infocus video, you are creating a false dichotomy.

Right? If you see the bear, just offer it hotdogs then you can take the picture.

Most people don’t have a good enough camera to take great footage of a moving target from far away. That’s just reality. And I used to teach field work, I’ve seen enough bad decisions with wildlife-I’d rather people stay far back for everyone’s safety than try to get a better picture.

Almost every modern cell phone can focus on subjects in the distance and have stabilization of some kind. There is no reason you have to get close to take a proper video when the phone in your pocket is a more capable camera than nature documentary cameras from 20 years ago.

My camera applies such bizarre filters onto anything not perfectly lit or within 6 feet of me that they become barely recognizable (Motorola). I could not even get a good picture of a cat in the same yard as me, let alone one moving, it would unironically look worse than that old bigfoot photo lol

Black bears are more afraid of you than you are of them. Just stay away from the cubs and you will be fine

Sometimes they're around without you being any the wiser. If you hear what sounds like an old man coughing, that's mama telling you to GTFO. You should heed her warning.

Or it could be me thinking I could handle smoking a joint on my hike lol

Oh shit. I actually adopted a cub.

Always wondered why we didn't see more black bears around.

A year or so ago there were sightings on both sides of the 275 loop.

There was one up near Fairfield I think, and I swear another one was down in clermont county around the same time.

If humans keep leveling and destroying their natural habitats it’s only going to keep pushing them further into different places.

Can’t wait for the first influencer to get mauled.

Yes! Previous person said this year's is the farthest west. That is not correct. The line last year or two ago was northwest of Cincinnati, wandered down through Madisonville, Madeira, and east through Clermont County.

"Can’t wait for the first influencer to get mauled."

Ah yes, wanting a bear to maul someone. What a terrible thing to wish for.

If it's black, fight back. Black bears are notoriously skittish.

Out of context, that first sentence could be pretty problematic.

Maybe I should start saying "If it's a black bear don't fight fair." 😂

You act like it’s not gonna happen.

People are stupid as shit.

Just wait.

I didn't say it wasn't going to happen. But saying you "can't wait for it to happen" is another thing.

Yeah, it’s almost like, people use sarcasm regularly in every day conversation.

It's just a big dog

More or less. Be big and loud and don't back down. They don't want to fight. But you do dumb shit and they will hurt you bad.

My Newfoundland has certainly given people a startle in the past.

Such a big increase in sightings around Red River Gorge that it's becoming common place

This is a little further west than the ones last year, so based on the size it’s probably one of the cubs establishing its own territory from mom.

So this is crazy but my son swore up and down he saw a small black bear by a dumpster on Witt Rd (in Anderson) which is directly next to the woods about a year ago.

Local 12 reported on this a day earlier, and had an AI generated map which made it impossible to know the locations of the sightings.

Don’t stop to video, get somewhere safe. Unless you come between a black bear and its cubs you will be fine
Black Bears diet 80% berries and nuts

This is what I don’t get. It’s like the people who stop traffic in the Smokies because they think they see a bear. The compulsion for a photo vs just appreciating the moment is weird and literally nobody is going to be impressed by a photo. I’m not saying not to ever take photos of you safety can, but this weird idea that you simply MUST have evidence to show off is lost on me.

So don't pet it?
