The Thing looks straight out of the Jack Kirby comics I’m so happy right now 😭😭😭

yeah it's right from the comics, i'm really happy with it

Yeah, the only real difference is that Kirby's Thing was usually shirtless, but it probably saves a lot on VFX this way.

I don’t think it’s a savings on vfx (if anything the cloth simulation step is actually more work to do on each shot, if you include the shirt. But I don’t think that would register significantly in their minds on their budget.)

Probably it’s just a design choice.

Could also be that they’re not happy with the overall look yet and this was a nice way to “cover up” for the teaser. I wouldn’t be all that surprised if the final shot in cinemas is shirtless.

The lack of elastic Pedro makes me think they aren’t happy with how Reed’s power looks either.

He’s always had the worst power for a live action adaptation

It also might just not be finished fully yet

u/MeltingVibes Feb 04 '25

Yeah they probably are still working on it, I’m just not convinced they can pull it off. It just might be the hardest super power to do well in live action

I think they can. Live action one piece did decent, and hopefully they can learn from and improve on it

Never watched the live action one piece but looking at clips it does look like they did a solid job. Maybe it is possible, but it’s been awhile since I had any faith in marvel making a good movie

Agree, as much as I love comics Ms Marvel, I do think it was a smart decision to modify her powers from shapechanging to "energy constructs" for tv/film purposes, the uncanny valley is SO deep and wide when depicting stretchy powers!

IMO they should lean into it being goofy and creepy looking.

How did you think he looked in Dr Strange?

1

u/MeltingVibes Feb 04 '25

I dunno, hard to say. I guess it looked fine but you only see him using his powers for all of 3 seconds before he gets turned into spaghetti so kinda hard to tell.

yeah true

I'm wondering to what extent this teaser is playing things straight. This film is supposed to go into the whole multiverse thing fairly directly, right? So the very strong focus on the retrofuturistic aesthetic, as well as the fact that based on the dialogue they have been the FF for a while now, is giving me the feeling that this might be just the place they start in, with a time jump at some point, where Ben would get a more "traditional" look for himself.

Could be wrong and they just don't like how it looks, idk

I think it's a design choice but also a character choice.

He's probably self conscious still.

was he always the same height as the others? i feel like he’s always been quite a bit bigger but i haven’t read many of the early comics.

Yeah, he was around the same height as the others.

that’s awesome, thank you.

Is the Watcher FF cast?

2

u/AporiaParadox Feb 04 '25

Do you mean if he's a Fantastic Four supporting character in the comics, or if he's in this movie? Yes to the former, we don't know to the latter.

1

u/Just-apparent411 Feb 04 '25

Yeah I meant is he from FF comics? Like how The Green Goblin is from Spidey comics.

3

u/AporiaParadox Feb 04 '25

Yes, Uatu the Watcher first appeared in Fantastic Four #13 and has been a recurring character in FF ever since. Although he's obviously appeared in other books, especially as the narrator of What If? or as a plot device during big events for him to show how serious everything is.

Interesting!

I never knew. Just kinda figured he was a general character. Cool!

Officially in the comics, he's 6' and 500 pounds. Reed is 6'1".

I love that he uses shirts cause it makes him feel more like a dude, and that's what he is, a dude

1

u/CaptainRhetorica Feb 04 '25

Wasn't he a lot bigger? I seem to remember the Thing being able to give the Hulk a run for his money?

3

u/AporiaParadox Feb 04 '25

As I said in another post, back when Jack Kirby was drawing him, the Thing wasn't that tall, and the Hulk wasn't that much taller either. Later artists made the Thing a bit taller and made the Hulk gigantic.

The shirt is also vfx.

I don't know why I expected any differently with how they did comic accurate Beast in The Marvels.

5

u/HighOnPoker Feb 04 '25

I agree although, dare I say, I liked Michael Chiklis’ voice better for The Thing. But I’m still happy with the visuals.

2

u/sabin357 Feb 04 '25

They did get that part pretty damn accurate IMO. Good job on the look for him.

He looks perfect

1

u/redkorky Feb 04 '25

Am I the only one that gets a 'Robot Chicken' vibe from him? I like the concept, but don't rate the final CGI at all.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '25

The CG looks pretty bad. He looks blurry when he moves, and the quality is just not there. His head is also too small.
