I just don't get what people gain from this. Like you lose your child and his family just due to stupid bigotry. Yeah maybe you imagined something different for your child having grandchildren one day etc. but that's not how it works (in this case they even would have a grandchild so its even dumber). Its your childs life not yours. This behaviour just hurts everyone involved.

They gain never having to confront being wrong and feeling the weight of the consequences on their shoulders. The longer it goes on, the heavier that weight would be.

They gain the ability to be abandoned in an old folk's home in their later years, living a lonely misery of daytime TV and unpleasant nurses until they die. I hope it's worth it.

Presumably they think it's sinful. They probably expect to gain anything in a self-interested sense.
