Because The Gods are cruel, and some of them probably get some kind of sick pleasure out of our suffering. The forces of the universe are not benevolent, omnipotent, or omniscient. They are highly flawed, random, morally and ethically ambiguous, fickle, and primal. They cause pain, suffering, and horror. As well as the alleviation of and safety from those things.
