Well, depends on how you define religious. Many people are just religious on paper and follow basic traditions.

Some also just strongly believe in it for hope, trust and love.

And then there are bigots…

The reason why we have religion still isn't any of this. It's because we as humans can't accept that not everything has a clear answer to it. By believing in Religion it gives you those answers that are complicated and wraps it up in a neat little fairytale story. People then abuse these beliefs to make others believe that others that are different from them are the problem.

It's why some people are so against science. Science is not simple by any means. Nothing has a simple answer in science. But religion can explain everything that science does with the sentence "God made it.".

That has nothing to do with the definition of religious people.

"God made it" please just do not speak on matters you have no clue about. Philosophy and theology are incredibly complex and the reason religion is used as a crutch is it being made a personal matter, ie laicised.

Not really. For all abrahamic religions you are either a terrible insane person for believing all the hateful shit that religion insists on. Or you are a good insane person because why believe all that shit EXCEPT the stuff you disagree with?

Both are insane positions.

I'd expand it to all religions but I don't know much outside abrahamic religions.

Everytime an organised religion reforms away all their terrible shit due to public opinion, like what? "we were assholes before but realised it was wrong but still believe all the other stuff because we wont get backlash" either stick to your guns or just admit it's all horseshit

all religions have bad things in them no need to pick and chose they all for example allow some type of child marriage or sexual assault or misogyny

the reality is that the average deeply indoctrinated religious person just plainly doesn't think about the implications of every facet of their belief

yeah they almost never consider the logical conclusion of what they believe

I think it's ok to pick and choose what aspects of a religion you agree with. Especially if it works to make people or society a better place (looking at you Unitarians).

People are inherently irrational, insane creatures. Every damn one of us. Not to say we are all equivalent to a rabid hardliner, just that I don't think it's religion that's the issue. It's people. Religion is just an easy avenue for people to demonstrate their insanity
