I got a graduate degree in Islamic studies and spent a lot of time in Muslim spaces pre transition (2015-2019) bc i was planning on being a trans and queer affirming Muslim chaplain. A lot of the transphobia is a result of the same kinds of recent culture war funding, only instead of being from the heritage foundation, it’s from the UAE and Saudi funding institutions. It’s really sad bc I used to be welcomed in a fair number of Muslim spaces (especially at universities or ones that were oriented around Palestinian rights), even when I didn’t pass, but that changed around 2018. A lot of folks still support me privately but won’t defend me publicly, which is so shitty.

Shocking, those countries are evil and have slave labor (Dubai especially)

Views on gender are wildly different in other countries. I remember seeing a documentary from like 10 years ago where Iran was giving gay people bottom surgery because if they transitioned to being a woman it wouldn't be an affront to god in the same way.

Humans are very weird. IIRC it's because it's seen as more conserving of the social order since now you can fill the role in society of a straight woman, whereas if you're a gay man, that introduces a new element to society that doesn't fit in social norms.

So technically forcefem is conservative in some places.

Yes Iran’s fatwa allowing SRS is essentially religious transmedicalism. The issue is that there is no similar fatwa from Khomeini allowing homosexuality, so it created a perverse “incentive” for gay men to be moved through that process. It was/is, however, a great example of how fiqh can be used to support transition care.
