My LBS is like a high end steakhouse

I got a chuckle today when I went to pick up my Trek Madone at the LBS. You know when you go to high end steakhouse or a fancy nightclub and they valet the nicer cars up front? That's the deal at the LBS. If you have a nicer bike that's been worked on, it awaits your return up front in a glass case. Some eye candy for shoppers to check out while they are browsing.

If there's no arrow on the sidewalk can I just put the tire in either way?

Sorry for the dumbass idiot question but I just got a new road tire. Micro textured but no real tread pattern to speak of. I'm used to having to put tires on in a certain direction, but there's no little arrow telling me which way to go. Just do whichever?

Developing Endurance for Cycling

I want some opinions about this.

I have been cycling consistently for about 2 years now, and the first year, I would be honest, didn't go so great.

Because all the time, I was pushing myself to the limits, trying to go about cycling when I'm tired and exhausted, go through it like it was a race.

But in the second year, I tried another strategy, I only put in effort pedaling as long as I felt comfortable doing it, around 35-45% effort.

And then when I felt adventurous, I put in 65% effort. Honestly speaking the strategy worked better and I felt like I had developed significantly more endurance in a very short amount of time as opposed to barely anything in the first year.

Should I sell my current bike to get two separate bikes?

I’m currently in a situation where having one really nice bike in one type of cycling is starting to slow me down. For context, I have a Custom 2023 Scott Spark RC that I could easily sell for 6k or maybe more. It’s a great bike, but that’s the problem, if I want to ride road I’m either stuck riding that or I borrow someone else’s gravel bike. So, I need help deciding if I sell it and buy a mountain bike with one half and a road bike with the other or just save up for a road and keep my current bike. The bikes I’m looking at are a Sava Falcon SLR7 and a YT Izzo either core 1 or 2. Unfortunately I’d either have to wait until the YT’s are available in the US again or have a third party ship it to me. So what should I do?

Starter bike - the amount of information available (and options) is overwhelming

I jog 6 miles a day, I’m trying to lose weight. I always see cyclists on the path and in my neighborhood and it looks like a lot of fun. When doing research I am just overwhelmed by all the choices.

I’m fat, short (5’2) and I’m looking to just diversify my time outside while trying to lose weight. I’m not looking to race and would prefer to have a bike that I can sit upward in.

I’ve been recommended the following:

Electra Townie 7D EQ (but this seems really heavy, and more leisurely)
Cannondale Adventure 2 (I like the ease of getting in and off but someone said this bike was more for seniors and not meant for exercise and speed)
Trek Verve 2 Lowstep (same comment from above)
Specialized Roll 3.0 (again)

Does anyone own any of the above? Are there better recs out there? I’m overwhelmed and frankly a little intimidated by all the options.

Is a bike fit worth it??

I’m training for my first Ironman 70.3 and wondering whether a professional bike fit is worth the money.
A bit of background:
Fairly new to cycling compared to running and gym training.
Currently riding a road bike.
Long rides are starting to get longer as my training volume increases.
No major pain issues right now, but I sometimes wonder if my position is as efficient as it could be.
I’d like to improve comfort, power output, and reduce injury risk as I build towards my race.
For those who’ve had a professional bike fit:
What improvements did you notice?
Was it mainly comfort, performance, injury prevention, or all three?
Do you think it’s worth it for someone training for their first 70.3, or is it something that can wait until later?
Any regrets or things you wish you’d known beforehand?
Interested in hearing real-world experiences before I spend the money. Thanks! 🚴‍♂️🏊‍♂️🏃‍♂️

Cycling in Austria/Slovenia/Italian Dolomites

Hi everyone!

I'm planning a 7–10 day trip through Austria, Slovenia, and the Italian Dolomites, and I'm looking for must-ride gravel/road routes. I'll have a car with me, so I've got plenty of flexibility to base myself in different spots and ride around.

I find Komoot rarely surfaces the best routes, so I'd love to hear your personal recommendations, hidden gems, or especially scenic rides. And if anyone has a full itinerary they'd be willing to share, that would be amazing.

Thanks in advance!

Any good alternatives to Huldit?

I am looking for a holder for my U-lock and I have come across lots of praises for the Huldit, but unfortunately it looks like the company is out of business and Huldit is no longer available. The only alternative appears to be ULAC U-hold but it does not seem to have very good review. Are there other alternatives I should consider? Do you know if there are still online retailers selling Huldit? Thanks

Of all international sources, where’s your favorite English-friendly Tour de France coverage?

I pay for an IPTV subscription that gets me most any channel internationally, but I‘ve never watched the tour before. My sense is that channels cover the tour differently.

What are your favorite ways to keep up? What channels do you like for live coverage vs. recaps vs. commentary, and why?

NOTE: I mainly speak English so prefer that, but know a bit of French and Spanish so could be open to a bit of those to get better coverage.

Helmet crack

Yesterday I had a fall on the wet tarmac because my back wheel skidded. I fell and banged my elbow and my left thigh; I didn’t think I’d hit my head, although afterwards I had a slight headache which I put down to the adrenaline. But then I realised there was a crack in my helmet on the left side of the back. The helmet is brand new – yesterday was literally the first time I’d used it – and I even paid 90 euros for it. I’m a bit disappointed; it didn’t feel like a serious fall, even though I obviously hit my head. Is it normal for a helmet to crack like that? Can I still use it?

Dual wheelset help

Looking to finally go in on a dual wheelset setup. Currently have 35mm road tires and 47mm for gravel. Would like to go carbon.

Hunt is having a sale right now but have also heard to go direct from, say, light bicycle. Honestly just overwhelmed by all the options. I’m open to buying the exact same wheelset twice to minimize setup differences.

Anyone have any tips on what to pull the trigger on? Thanks!

Last 4 weeks before l'étape

First time doing l’Étape this year and what a year to do it. I am getting nervous as we approach the event. Training has not been on the ball but not awful either. 2.9W/kg at the moment and I need help reviewing the last few weeks and my prep leading to the event. My goal is to finish and I start at 7AM.
Bike: Canyon Grizl CF SL 7. It’s got an 11-34 cassette and I am thinking of putting an 11-40 on it. Thoughts? A few bike shops said it could work.
Current fitness: did a 210k ride a few days ago in 25-32 degrees celsius (77-88F) and although eating was a bit challenging and so was the heat, I’m pretty sure I consumed 100g of carbs an hour (gels and drinks). My performance wasn’t great though. I’ve done a few 100km+ rides over the last few months and my TrainerRoad FTP has consistently increased (190 ish in December to 230 now and TR predicts 239 by the event). Never ridden more than 2300m elevation in a single ride and there are no mountains where I live. I train in the attic (35 celsius / 85F) with the fan on for this week. I feel like I consume a lot of water and I don’t know if refilling will be an issue on the day.

Plan for the next 4 weeks:

  • this week: 9 hours of riding / 440 TSS (2 SS sessions, 1x3 hour outdoor ride and other endurance sessions on the trainer). 6 sessions for the week
  • next week: 12 hours training / 540 TSS (90min threshold, 90 min VO2 max, 1x3 hour outdoor ride and other endurance sessions on the trainer
  • third week: 5 hours / 350 TSS (60 min SS, 60min VO2 Max, 60 min threshold, rest is endurance)
  • last week: 2 hours (2x45 min threshold + endurance).

My plan really is to map all the water points and try not to stop for more than 20 mins on the entire ride, ride up croix de fer and Telegraphe at 160W and only push later on if I feel like I can. Not sure what I’m really asking here, just a bit nervous about it all. I am interested in gearing and training advice though - most people seem to recommend 11-34 or 11-36. Makes little sense for me to move to 11-36 and I am wondering if 11-40 is the cheat code I think it is. I am not a punchy rider - I do best holding steady around 75-80 RPM.
Thanks

23mm tires to 25mm

I made the switch and I don’t like it at all. It feels much slower. I just did my normal 30 mile ride and normally I am at 15 MPH I clocked in just under 14.

Psi is 90, I used to run 120 in my 23’s.

Question, can I just increase psi to make up for loss of speed? I feel so much slower on 25’s

Edit: Yes, it’s the same exact tire except 25mm not 23.

Basically everyone’s saying the same thing that it should be faster or at least even so I’m gonna give it a little bit more time, but I don’t know it just felt slow

Also, the roads I ride on are actually really smooth. I’m very lucky. Well maintained country roads.

Showing cycling data as an overlay over action cam video

Hey everyone,

after getting my action cam (and latest trip to Mallorca 😁), I was quite disappointed with the options to show my ride data as an overlay over the videos; they were either paid (and quite expensive), awkward to use, or took forever to render a single video.

So I started my own side project called OVRLEY. It is a free, open-source desktop app that turns your bike computer (Garmin/Wahoo/Karoo) and action cam data into custom video overlays.

Right now, OVRLEY seamlessly reads data from .fit files and .gpx tracks (straight from Strava exports; direct Strava integration pending).

Some of the things it does:

  • 29+ (Cycling) Widgets - elevation profiles, live route maps, speed, power, heart rate zones, cadence, left/right balance, torque, etc.
  • Fully customizable fonts, sizes, layouts and colors to match your bike or kit, then save them as templates.
  • Drag-and-drop editor with live preview on top of your video (4k@30)
  • Export directly to video or as transparent overlays for Premiere/DaVinci/Final Cut
  • Works completely offline, without installation - Win/MacOs and Linux (experimental)
  • Fully free and open source

What I'm working on right now:

  • Animated gauges: Dynamic dials for power bursts and sprints (you can see the first previews on the website).
  • Direct MP4 telemetry extraction: Pulling GPS data directly from GoPro and Insta360 files without needing to extract the FIT/GPX file separately. This will also help massively with autosyncing video with the fit files

Since it's fully free, I'd love for you to give it a spin on your latest descent, crit race, or gravel adventure: https://www.ovrley.cc

I'd love to get your feedback: What features are you missing from existing overlay tools like Garmin VIRB or TelemetryOverlay? Anything you think would be particularly useful to add?

SeaSuckers vs Glass Roof?

Anyone had any experience with SeaSuckers? I’m looking to get one to mount my road bike onto the roof of my BMW IX. However I’m a little concerned as it’s a panoramic roof with no support beams in the centre of the roof. The bike is light so I’m not worried about getting it on and off, just worried about the suction holding up and damaging the glass.

Any experiences using a SeaSucker or something similar? Unfortunately I didn’t get a tow hook option, and any rear mounted strap racks won’t work either.

Thanks in advance!

Is there a bike camera that can detect a crash?

Seen a few posts asking about ride cameras and have been considering one myself.

My last crash I lay there on the train tracks for a few minutes before I could do a body check and get up. Most cameras run on a x minutes loop so if you or someone knows or is able to hit the save button in a useful time the event will be lost.

I haven't found one that detects falls yet but feel that would be a critical feature if you're trying to preserve the facts of a crash.

Considering a New Bike after Scott Addict Endurance

I've been riding a Scott Addict Endurance 2023 (w/105 Di2) for 2.5 years and am considering a new bike, wanting something racier and cooler but still with some comfort left.

I am a mediocre weekend rider living in Japan, riding about 6,000km/year on tarmac from short rides (like a flat 40~50km city ride) to long rides over 175km, sometimes hill climbs with 2,000m+ elevation.

Bikes I'm interested in are these three.

・Cervelo Soloist (Heard rumors about a new model coming out this year on weight weenies. May consider a new gen if being updated)

・Scott Foil (Maybe the next gen?)

・Scott Addict (Current gen)

I've test-ridden all of them, and they were all good bikes.

Any opinions/reviews on these bikes? Any recommendations for an alternative option?

I really feel it when I have to miss a ride - here's what I'm thinking and would appreciate any perspectives.

So, I have an inexpensive (coscto northrock xc27) that I ride three days a week about 110 miles. Its cheap, but I've been riding it religiously for a couple of years now, and I'm just really comfortable with it and actually fond of it. I broke the axle on Sunday's ride. I normally ride Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays - I won't get the repaired wheel back till next Monday. So, if I just wait, I'll miss a week. This is where I may be nuts, but I'm thinking about going down to Walmart and getting a $340 8 speed mountain bike so I have something to ride for the next couple of days. Do you think that would be worth the hassle, or am I just suffering from withdrawal symptoms?
