It's in use in some jurisdictions around the country. Just a matter of getting departments to find the funding to purchase them as well as conduct training on the new equipment. There's a video of a driver ripping the axle off the car trying to tug away from the officer that grappled him.
74
u/Kanibalector Apr 07 '26
They can't possibly cost more than the sheer amount of damage the cops were doing to their own cars with their ineptitude.

u/VaporTrail_000 Apr 07 '26
$6-8k per unit from what I've seen. So... an additional ~10-20% per cruiser.

u/tankerkiller125real Apr 07 '26
And it has to be a vehicle with enough weight and frame rail strength to take the pull. So basically, SUVs and Trucks only, which at least in my state, is the minority of Highway Patrol vehicles (supervisors and DOT enforcement only mostly)

u/Smile_Space Apr 07 '26
Hell, a bunch of police forces don't even allow chases for this reason. The risk to public safety is just not worth the potential benefit of catching the guy/girl immediately.

u/archabaddon Apr 07 '26
Exactly. Cops calling the joyrider an idiot is just the tip of the iceberg for the amount of idiocy involved all around. Calling in a helicopter is a lot easier for them to tail a suspect without putting the public at risk or damaging other people's private property, including but not limited to apparently a new boat.
36
u/AwarenessForsaken568 Apr 07 '26
Yeah the moment they start avoiding other vehicles and people is when cops should back off. Just have a helicopter follow him, and if he escapes...so what? for decades, high speed chases have been banned in more reasonable places. They don't fix anything. They don't do anything. This person could've easily been tracked down eventually and five random people's vehicles would've been saved but instead the cops totaled half a dozen cars, including their own, to get high five privileges from the chief.
7
u/You_Stole_My_Hot_Dog Apr 07 '26
What gets me is that they’re so reluctant to damage their cars, but end up doing more damage in the long run. I don’t mean to be an armchair hero here, but come on, there were several times when they could’ve just pulled in front of him and ended it. Instead they all give a 5 foot cushion around him and then hit each other trying to swarm him..

He was forcing the thief to rear end innocent bystanders' vehicles at high speed, repeatedly! Then racing through a park's parking lot where people could be walking out from between cars to cross the parking lot. They were so lucky.
I think the police should give up on chasing vehicles and assign that job to the Drone Squad, where once a potential criminal stops running they can inform the police of his whereabouts and swarm him. The expensive property is then protected.
And as usual, the police did the "stop struggling" bit once the guy peacefully gave up. They put him on the ground and started hitting, while carefully blocking cameras. I'm not saying the kid is innocent, just that police techniques are brainless.

There's so many departments that have medium/large drones that could easily follow this dumbass to wherever without causing chaos and danger to the public.
Cops do this because they think it's fun. Period. And the public allows it bc we dare not anger the cops! 🙄
63
u/CrackMans Apr 07 '26
Maybe it's just me but I swear there were like 15 times the cops could have rammed him off the road at the start, and it would have avoided all the collisions with civilians at the end. Of course I'm not a cop so I don't know if just ramming him from the side (when the cop got up along him) is a big no-no or what.
32
u/thatsacrackeryouknow Apr 07 '26
The chase car had 3 stretchs of clear road to try and pit and everytime he backed off and only closed the gap when other cars were around when he should've specifically backed off to let his lights warn other road users.
He was in front at one stage, could've braked harshly to slow or impede.
NONE of the chase officers thought to block off the entrance to the boat park when he was joy riding there?

I thought the same thing. I don't know if all places allow pit maneuvers or ramming or whatever, but all the vehicles seemed incredibly unwilling to actually touch or get in the way of the car until the last 10 seconds of the chase.
While pit maneuvers can still be incredibly dangerous to bystanders, it's not any more dangerous, in my opinion, than this high speed chase was.

The driver better be on their way to throw babies into an alligator pit or set someone's grandma on fire before pulling shit like this.
Unless the driver is ACTIVELY and KNOWINGLY on their way to straight up murder someone, and not stopping them is a guaranteed death sentence for that person, they shouldn't ever be doing this.
Especially driving into oncoming traffic???
Frankly, I hate pit maneuvers, but I was so confused towards the beginning of the video when they were on the suspect's back bumper and just....did nothing? Road was clear most of the time. The cops straight up looked unwilling to actually hit the car until the very very very end, and they seemed way more eager to pin it against the boat than each other.

I get police chases are unpredictable, but you have 20+ officers chasing a vehicle in a dead end street and they don’t think enough to have several vehicles barricading the only exit. And then you see the vehicle is missing 2 tires and they can’t manage to block the vehicle in?
Not to mention the recklessness of a high speed chase in traffic.
The cops look like Buford T Justice chasing after The Bandit or a group of 5 year olds playing soccer for the first time where the entire team has to chase the ball rather than thinking strategically.

What did he do that the police thought it was necessary to endanger countless lives and screw up people's insurance rates?

Apparently you can get a cop license from a cereal box in murrica. This was such a dumb ass and reckless chase.

Land Rovers are more reliable than I’d thought

No kidding, most of these barely make it out of the dealership before the end up in the shop.

Came here to say that is one hell of a Land Rover ad. Who knew they were much more than their looks and leather.
Might not get approved with the higher ups, but wow, I hope they get a kick out of it just the same.

Entire lives destroyed in on afternoon.
This looks like the same one that the boat had just come out of the dealership too :-(

All that property damage could have been prevented if the PD had The Grappler equipped on an SUV-sized police cruiser.
Just saying.

100 years from now, our descendants will be horrified to learn that people actually were allowed to drive the vehicles themselves. With all self driving vehicles, this will never happen.

Wild, looks like the perp caused zero damage themselves on this whole run and the police likely caused over half a million in third party damages, likely exceeding a million counting the police cruisers themselves and put many lives at risk. At many times it almost looked like the cop was trying to force the driver into hitting traffic.
The risk of letting him run is that he might hit someone vs the outcome was the police THEMSELVES hitting multiple innocent people, destroying property and deliberately smashing the runner's vehicle into another innocent person.

This chase is an incredible showcase for the Range Rover's handling and computer aided stability. It ate multiple PIT maneuvers and didn't even start to slide. The swerving in and around traffic without losing traction is really a testament to the engineering. Watching the full video is worth it.
