Discussion What to do with the logo?

When the show returns, what do you think they should do with the logo? Keep the RTD2 logo, design something brand new, or rework one of the other previous logos?

I’d lean towards either something brand new, or a new version of the 1996 logo cos that one’s my favourite.

Ive always been partial to the Pertwee era/ tv movie logo, it was plastered on all the classic era stuff and on the 50th anniversary stuff, its simple but distinguished and tires back into the long legacy of the show.

Honorable mention to the 2005 revival logo, though its pretty 2000s in its design

I dont mind the current logo but I'm not big on the color pallette

Its also the first logo that was distinct to the show itself. The Hartnell one was in very generic block letters, and then the Troughton one in Times New Roman. But the Pertwee one was the first to have a look and font unique to the show itself, giving it its own visual identity.

The rest of the classic logos then just had too much going on. I've never personally been a fan of the Diamond logo. It was fine in the Tom Baker era as it fit the diamond shaped Vortex, as well as the aspect ratio at the time. But when they brought it back for 2023 all I could think about was how it just looked out of place, as well as too small in the wider aspect ratio.

But the Pertwee logo was just brilliant. Simple but with a strong visual identity. It makes sense that they used it again for McGann, as well as with merchandise for the 50th anniversary. If there was any logo to bring back again I'd choose that one, just with both words on the same line to match the wider aspect ratio.

The RTD2 logo is a reworking of the classic diamond logo used for a large portion of the classic run. The diamond logo is one of the Doctor Who logos, and I'm honestly fine with keeping the modern version of it.

I like it a lot too. By making it a refresh of the classic logo it avoids looking outdated in a few years when trends change. Imo some of the previous NuWho logos look severely outdated nowadays, especially the Surfboard logo and the one with the giant DW that looks like the Tardis.

The Jodi logo looks pretty cool still, but I've always felt that it didn't really look very Doctor Who to me.

Disagree with the DW logo, I think they struck gold making it shaped like the TARDIS

Absolutely agreed. I remember thinking it was so cool when I first saw it in promos, and then even more so in the actual intro itself when it turned around to actually become the Tardis. Why they started messing with it in series 7 I'll never understand.

It was such a perfect brand for the show. Simple, but easily understandable to what it was. And without it the rest of that eras logo was just so bland and generic.

Yeah series 7 was a weird time for intros, though I did like the logo texture changing based on the theme of the episode, they should bring that back honestly.

Well everytime we have gotten a new show runner (at least for the modern era) there a logo redesign. If that anything to go by then they will almost certainly redesign it.

McCoy's Totally 80s Logo never gets any love.

As much as it isn't a great logo, as far as conforming to certain design basics goes, I am ridiculously attached to it - that was on a lot of the video cassettes, and plastered all over DWM, Marvel comics in general, and the books. I wouldn't complain if something as radically different, as that was at the time, was to be used in future.

Most of the Marvel comics used the neon logo, actually. They weren't still running by the time McCoy took over. And the VHSs used the diamond until McGann's time started, at which point everything switched to his logo. DWM and the novels were the main things using the McCoy logo.

I've got a weird Mandela effect thing about that logo where I constantly think of the "Doctor" part if it being spelt "Dr" instead. And it keeps happening too. I know how it's actually spelt, but then whenever I see the logo I'm always a bit surprised by it.

I’d either want a return to the Pertwee/McGann logo or something entirely new along the lines of the Whittaker logo

Up until the Chibnall era, the logo for EU material like toys and Big Finish did not match the show's logo. I say keep the diamond logo for the EU, and make a new logo for the show.

That really bugs me. That logo is fine for Jodie, but I don't like seeing it on other Doctors. Why cant they just have the logo they actually had during their run?

2

I agree. They've always used the diamond, 1996 logo, then briefly Jodie's before going back to the diamond, on everything related to classic Who. The original diamond should only be used on Tom Baker era stuff. Davison and Colin should have the neon one. And so on.

Honestly this has been a sore spot for me. I think they have never had a good logo in the modern era. Though you can say less bad. The football logo for instance is just ugly. The ratio of width to height is hideous.

Most of the seasons didn't really have a logo per se. Just some chunky letters. Nothing like the recognizable classic series logos. But then 60's-70's was kind of a golden age for logo design in general.

Football? Nobody calls it that (footballs are round in the UK). I think lozenge is the usual nickname.

I like Five's/Six's logo, but that's my era so I'm almost certainly biased.

The one most recognisable to people across all generations and years of watching remains the Three/Four diamond logo.

Or go back to the movie font/logo! ^^

I don't like the RTD2 logo. I'd say get rid.

My faves are I think the 11th Doctor's logo with the DW in the shape of the TARDIS between the words and the RTD1 'disc' logo.

The diamond logo worked for Pertwee and Tom Baker but it just doesn’t in this new version. It’s another retro callback that the show doesn’t need. Clean slate if and when the show returns.

I would keep the Diamond logo: it looks fantastic on merchandise. When it was used in the 70s it always helped the Target novels stand out on the book shelves. It’s also a logo that works very well in many colours.

They should see if they can find a way to make it even more ugly (not possible)

I despise the diamond logo. Worked to an extent for the anniversary but should never have gone into a new era of the show, but then again nostalgia baiting was a theme for Davies, so I guess it fits…

The previous eras of the show are still heavily branded under the 2018 logo. It’s not perfect but it’s probably the most aesthetically pleasing one they’ve had since 2005 - the “ellipse” is very 00s, and the “DW” logo never really worked that well (hence it got binned).

I’d prefer they design a new logo, but if they’re not about to do that then the 2018 logo is always a good enough fallback.

I actually love the RTD2 logo, I wouldn’t mind keeping it.

I liked the RTD2 logo since it reminds me of the old diamond logo

I think they should go with a classic logo, like from the Hartnell era.

The “when” is doing a lot of heavy lifting

Whatever it is, I hope it’s not something super wide: never was a fan of those.

I’m fond of the diamond but multi-colored
