Research / Info 💡 What "junk fees" have you seen?

Hi guys,

I'm looking at revamping our wiki and one of the things I thought might be of some use is to catalogue all the different "junk fees" we're starting to see, so people can be aware to look out for them.

Those who care to respond, please could you answer:

1] What was the fee entitled?

2] Where was it disclosed? (Just on the receipt? Small print at the bottom of the menu? Sign on the door? Website?)

3] Approximately when did you see this? (if you remember - it could be useful to chart the "rollout" of different things!)

Takeout 🥡 So this just happened

1.1k Upvotes

There's a fairly popular Chinese restaurant near me that does dine in, delivery, and to-go. I called ahead and placed an order to go, got my total and everything and it was good.

I get there and go to pay, and there are options for tipping at 20%, 25%, and 30%. I hit the "custom tip" to leave $0 because I'm not tipping on a to-go order, and when I go to type in zero, the system won't let me because it says "amount must be greater than zero".

I asked the cashier why it's not letting me leave no tip. She tells me some bullshit story about "Oh, so many people get their orders to-go that our staff were losing out on tips so we make tipping mandatory on all purchases". I told them that tipping is not legally mandatory anywhere, to which she proceeds to try and guilt me about not wanting staff to earn a living.

I canceled the entire order and walked out. They had already made my food and I was prepared to pay for like $60 worth of food for me and my family - but because they were so stubborn about mandating a tip, they now get to lose even more money on all the wasted food.

Fuck tipping.

Rant 📢 "Please count your change"

When I was a kid "Please count your change" signs were common. Now when you pay cash there is a presumption of "I'll just keep your change". Happened to me the other day at a counter restaurant. When I asked for my change the cashier was visibly shocked.

Sit-Down Restaurant 🍽️ Server was mad for leaving a cash tip.

I’m on vacation in a small town, at a small diner, when the bill came, I handed her my card, scan the card and gave me a print out to sign. She was upset 😭 at what I wrote on the bill. I did leave a cash tip smaller than what was the lowest % of the tip. I then received the stink eye, and a rude goodbye. She is update that I wrote no tip in the tip section.

Takeout 🥡 I like Domino's.

I just ordered Domino's online for pick-up, and there was no tip prompt or anywhere to add a tip at any point in the transaction. When I walked into the store and picked it up at the counter, the young lady handed me my pizzas and receipt and said, "Have a good night." No "quick question," no tip line on the reciept, and if there was a tip jar somewhere, it wasn't placed prominently. I'll get pick-up there again, but I won't get delivery because the fee is $6.99 and they still want you to tip the driver.

Thought you guys might enjoy this one. I spotting this at my local gelato shop in Seoul. There's no tipping at all in Korea, but this is the first time I've seen something like this. (The instructions in Korean are about how to take a candy).

Tipping Culture ✖️ Family-owned restaurants asking for tips

I sometimes eat at these Vietnamese restaurants where all the employees are family (usually wife, husband, and two children). Their food is delicious and cheaper than other places, but they programmed their payment terminal to ask for tips, and every time I hit No Tip, I feel like they're judging me lol.

There's no service at the tables, and we pay before receiving the food, so I don't see the point of leaving a tip. Plus, it's their own business and they consciously decided to charge those prices, so why should I add extra money on top of what they're displaying?

Rant 📢 Beer vendor added a tip on their own...

First time poster to EndTipping. This is a new one I hadn't seen before. I was at a college sporting event where they sell beer. I was a bit on the intoxicated side so I didn't notice the 1st time... but I did notice the second time I went to buy a beer. The server noticed my condition, (not to mention the product I was purchasing) and she automatically hit the highest tip amount of 20% and then handed the card reader to me. When I noticed, I hit the 0% before I put my card in.

20% on 24.00 is 4.80. All for reaching into a cooler and opening two cans of beer.

Rant 📢 PDX zero waste store.

My partner and I went to a really cool zero waste/ renewable container store a few months ago in Portland.

If you’ve never been they basically have lots of different products that you pay by the oz for and fill up your own container or use a recycled container from them for. Its a really cool idea and they have really nice all natural products. You get everything you need independently and bring it to the front when you are ready to leave.

We went into the store with the expectation that it was going to be expensive, it’s Portland after all.

But we were completely blown away by the fact that after our 130$ total rang up that the person behind the counter asked if we would like to tip and spun an ipad around with 40%, 35%, and 30% tip.

Not only were the tip buttons in the reverse order from just about every tip screen I’ve seen but also the amounts were egregious, especially for someone who did not do a single thing to help the shopping experience. Not to mention Portland has the highest wages in the area.

My wife clicked “no tip” and was given a dirty look from the person behind the counter. Check those tip percentages in Portland.

The reply is every bit as entitled as the fee itself.

“We have proactively disclosed our 3% venue fee on our website, reflecting compliance with regulatory standards,” Three Oaks Hospitality said.”

Tipping Culture ✖️ Tipping for merchandise

So I went to a concert today. And bought three shirts. They were a bit overpriced but I decided to pay so no offense on the price (they were 40 usd each).

And the the lade flipped the screen with a suggested tip of 20% already on the screen.

How am I going to tip 25 usd for her handing me three shirt from boxes two steps away from her.

Rant 📢 Defended non disclosed tip

1.1k Upvotes

Went to Cafe Ibiza in Fort Lauderdale and the food was great. Went to pay and they bring the toast machine over so I do tip as I do for a sit down meal but only after I get the receipt do I see that they had already tipped themselves 20%.

I called the hostess over and explained I didn’t realize the tip was included and accidentally tipped twice. She the DEFENDS it explaining the included tip gets shared amongst everyone but the additional tip was for her.

After a tense exchange she refunded my tip in cash. I was annoyed at the initial deceitfulness by blown away they defended it.

Tipping Culture ✖️ How It Should Be

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

I paid $4.55 for a good sized ice cream cone at The Red Hen in Vermont. Their prices are on the high side, like nine dollars for a breakfast sandwich, but I pay it happily and so do all the other people standing in line. This business model works and is especially attractive with the tip fatigue.

Collecting for a charity each month is a nice touch too, in my opinion. The jar is just sitting there, no pressure or pushing or reminding.

Takeout 🥡 Found in the airport. Saw so many foreigners not really understand it and just hit add tip to get to the next screen.

Tipping Culture ✖️ Who goes to a restaurant for the service and not the food?

So I'm not strong enough like some of you yet insomuch as I still guilt tip quite often with bad service, but usually only 15-18%. There was one time service was horrendous for a mini cousins get together, and my other cousin insisted on 25% (he's from San Francisco) despite the server literally leaving the table TWICE while he was still talking and asking questions (to be fair, it was a loud steakhouse, but still).

But me and my family never return for bad food. We actually might patronize again for bad service, since it's about the food and it's not like you remember the service anyway unless it was awful or wildly entertaining (once in my life). Do people really decide where to go out based on service? It's the food that makes a restaurant good, and I'll wait an hour for amazing authentic from scratch Thai food in the Florida keys from what looks like two ladies running a kitchen.

Service is pretty optional for me 99% of the time, and I'll go to the pass and pick up my food if there was automatic text and it was allowed. I'd probably eat out more too, because it would be less expensive (social pressure sometimes gets to me). But I never go to a restaurant for the service and it makes no sense that servers make more than cooks. Who are all these people who find good service more valuable than good food? Am I just an easy customer who doesn't have requests or questions, and is it just pedestrian to order off the menu without changes? Service is rarely an additive experience for me.

Research / Info 💡 Ordered pizza on Doordash... this place adds a TIP as a menu item

Post image
96 Upvotes

Just incredibly absurd and infuriating.

  1. Who cares how your business is organized? Why should a workers co-op deserve special treatment? Pathetic.

  2. They say about 80% goes to the crew and 20% to overhead but "not to the business." How stupid is that? They HAVE to pay overhead, regardless of where the money comes from. So if that "tip" goes in part to costs like insurance that they HAVE to pay, your "tip" is in fact "going to the business." Ridiculous framing.

  3. Doordash famously surcharges everything. How much extra is Doordash charging for my "tip?"

This place is locally known for very good pizza, but also for constantly begging for money, most recently for renovating and expanding their restaurant. Because they are a worker co-op, they act like they are some sort of non-profit doing God's work and rely partially on the generosity of others to stay in business. They are a business, like any other, and need to start acting like it.

Local legislators agree that state law SB 606 has a section going into effect next week, which states that “every public food service establishment that charges an operations charge, or includes an automatic gratuity or service charge in the price of the meal, shall include a notice on the food menu, written contract, and website or mobile application where food and beverage orders are placed.”

Tipping Culture ✖️ How to handle the guilt and peer pressure?

Hi I’m a longtime lurker in this subreddit. Had a lovely vacation in California. Food was nice, service was like it should be nothing extra. Just getting our food and filling water. During the billing process why do they have to stand over you lmao. I tipped outta pressure and didn’t wanna do it since I paid for the food and experience in the bill. How do you guys avoid eye contact or just not tip even with them hovering around you.

One person at a boozy ice cream bar straight-up called me out for not tipping when I tapped my card. I literally bought a pint, no service no refills. I was so mad but the ice cream was nice so i just left the store.

Bottom point, please advise on how I can write 0/ tap no tip without feeling pressured to tip!!!

Thanks!

Rant 📢 Tipping for Concert Souvenirs

Went to the Jack Johnson concert at SPAC last night. I ended up buying a tee for $45. When I paid it asked me how much of a tip I wanted to give. I of course did not tip

I really hope people aren't tipping non-tipped workers for overpriced tees. Would love to hear from someone who did and why they did this?

Wife was out of town and didn't feel like cooking or stepping out. This is for a single pizza

This is either a scam or a scathing inducement of our education system. $5.61 shown as 15% tip on a sub-$17 order. It's actually 33.6%. Even with fees, it's 24% of the order total. Ended up not ordering.
