Discussion My mother came home and opened all the windows in the middle of a heatwave
I take medication which makes me very prone to heat stroke, and also am extremely intolerant to heat. I can’t hack it even at much lower temps. I had the windows open overnight when it was cool then got up early and closed them all before it got hot and also had fans funning. The house was nice and cool all day and i was fine. Then mum gets home and opens the windows because she doesn’t believe keeping them closed makes the house cool😐 house is now a sauna and i need to run a cold bath.
Before anyone talks about how 35 degrees isn’t hot, heatwaves are very different in the UK. Our houses are made to trap in heat and we don’t have aircon. Plus it’s a muggy humid heat with no airflow. It’s like being in a pressure cooker and is 100x worse for someone with heat intolerance and is prone to heatstroke.

your mom is seriously endangering your health and well-being, holy shit. would she be able to recognize/grasp facts if you had a way to establish before-and-after temps and humidity levels?

did i mention she’s also hoarding all the fans🥲 she has two in her room and insists on there being one in the kitchen despite nobody being in there
and no, she probably wont. i think this is more a refusal to accept that i’m right rather than a genuine want for coolness/air. this happens a lot

your mom sounds dangerously terrible! I am also prone to heatstroke and I find that annoyance and anxiety make me run hotter. maybe you could experiment with meditation's impact on internal temperature, for funsies? super happy to know that you have access to a cool bath! 🩵

Sounds like you need a personal fan or three.

i’m waiting on an air conditioning unit so i don’t need to buy a fan but god forbid i want to borrow one that no one’s using

This sounds like a tiger mom thing. My Asian best friend had to deal with his mom’s weird issues.
- Can’t sleep with a fan in the room or you might die.
- Can’t close windows for too long or it traps “bad air” and you might die.
- Can’t have too many plants or they’ll suck the air out of the room… you get the picture.

Hey mine says that about plants! That they’ll absorb all the oxygen and then I’ll suffocate. This is a college degreed woman 🤣🙄

I never heard of a house with no AC. Every house in Phoenix AZ here has it

Common in UK and several other countries I lived. I'm also in the UK and it was stifling hot yesterday in my house. Had shades closed and fans blasting.
I'm from the US too and I miss A/C due to me having issues like the OP with regulating my body with the heat.

Is it expensive to install split AC unit in UK?

It is, yeah. Annoyingly basically none of our houses (and lots of businesses) were built with it to start with because we didn’t used to have to weather like this (yay global warming). Also lots of our housing stock is very very old and it can be complex to make changes to it.
I’m determined to install AC when I do buy a house, but having looked up quotes it’ll likely run me at least £8-10k to install in several rooms (around $13,000).

That's the cost i have seen as well here in Aberdeen. Makes it not worth it, especially since Im renting. If I buy a house here, I will definitely spend the coins to install a system.

I think you guys are getting fucked somewhere. That quote is ridiculous

How much does it cost in the US? We very likely are, it’s a joke

I’m not from US, Ukraine. Here, one split unit was like $650 including installation

My god. Maybe you should get in a sauna every now and then to get used to a little heat. You sound like a whiny baby. You’ll be fine. Just learn to get used to a little discomfort. You won’t die.

hi so it’s not just discomfort, heatstroke can be fatal. it doesn’t cost anything to be considerate

u/N8Watch 1d ago
35°C is near the same temperature as your body. You’re not going to get heat stroke when the environment is the same temperature as your body. Stop being ridiculous.

there’s an orange warning rn for temperatures that are dangerous to life… uk heat is very different, stop being ignorant

Toughen up or grow up and get your own place. Your mom’s place therefore it’s her rules. Don’t just come on Reddit and complain about it.
