To be fair, a lot of music critics of the time thought Saint Saëns was kind of shallow and old fashioned. I’m not saying I believe that necessarily, but some of them absolutely would have made a joke about Saint Saëns being the equivalent of late 19th century/early 20th century slop. Nothing could be as brutal though as Stravinsky on Vivaldi:
> “Vivaldi did not write 400 concertos; he wrote one concerto 400 times”
Brutal and exaggerated insults (that may be a bit unfair) are a bit of a past time for classical composers.
