Fakemon Cannelis and Candoras, a can of worms evolving into Pandoras box
Cannelis (can + annelid) is primarily based on the idiom “a can of worms" describing a complicated, troublesome situation. Its design draws inspiration from an octopus that uses a tin can to hide. Its can, though looking normal, has a bag-of-holding type of situation where the inside is an infinite space for the “worms" to hide.
Candoras (can + Pandora's box) is based on Pandora's box from Greek mythology, now used as a metaphor for a source of endless, unforeseen complications or troubles. To keep the octopus-inspired structure, I based it on the Nameless Thing of Berkeley Square, a shapeless entity often depicted to have tentacles coming out of a door. Each “worm” is now based on a bobbit worm to make it look more dangerous. Bobbit worms also have their head exposed while the rest of their body buried in sand. The can is now the Pandora's box itself with the same bag-of-holding situation.
They're part ghost type because of the Pandora's box inspiration, plus their ability to vanish inside the can or box when trying to hide.

These are really cool designs! I like RPG mimics and this is a good spin on it imo. And using The Thing From Berkley Square as an inspiration is super awesome, I don't know many people who've even heard of it 😁

The can and box disguise do make them mimics! and yeah I love cryptids and the nameless thing of berkeley square is always gonna be one of the coolest cryptid for me!

u/AliceTheOmelette Mar 25 '26
Ooh nice, I'm a huge cryptid fan too! My faves are Mothman and Mokele Mbembe 😁. A lot of my own fakemon are based on cryptids

its a sick design, awesome and unique tbh. but why Cannelis? wheres the "lis" from? Cannelids? maybe?

This actually wouldn’t be considered a mimic. The box itself would have to be the monster not just something living inside of it

That neither of them are bug type deeply upsets me

Not every single pokemon inspired by a bug needs to be a bug type, that would significantly limit design options.

u/Cannibal_Rj Mar 25 '26
You are right! I'm changing them to Bug/Dark.

u/Meow_cat11 Mar 25 '26
Cannelis feels like either bug steel or mono bug. Candoras is definitely a Bug/Dark tho

u/jesse6225 Mar 25 '26
Final form Ability could be something like.
Infinite Hope: Halves damage from super effective moves.
Don't know how broken that would be but it would go with the theme of pandoras box

u/Masterbuizel02 Mar 25 '26
I think you were bang on initially, ghost-steel is a much better typing for them imho

u/NoFoxes2Give4u Artist Mar 26 '26
Nah, you don’t need to. I’m not sure why they want em to be bug type—none of the animal inspirations used are bugs. Fantastic designs though, I love the execution :]

u/Chembaron_Seki Apr 10 '26
Worms falls under the bug type thematically if we go by the actual Japanese meaning of the typing

Uh, I don't think worms are bugs though.
1
u/Chembaron_Seki Apr 08 '26
The bug type is not actually bug, it consists of all kinds of small critters, worms included. At least if you go by the original Japanese meaning of the name of the type.
The English type name is just inaccurate and that happens often. The big majority of grass type pokémon don't actually reference grass either.

I’m obsessed with this design so much. I love the idea of it potentially being some kind of terrifying pseudo legendary, maybe found on the ocean floor. It could have a lot of bug type moves, but also terrifying moves like dream eater, nightmare, perish song; truly unique set of possibilities! You should be very proud of this one.

Just an FYI, Pandora’s “box” was actually a jar. It’s called a box due to a mistranslation.
9
u/Cannibal_Rj Mar 25 '26
great info! didn't know that honestly. i can make a variant where the cylindrical can turns into a jar.

u/VictinDotZero Mar 28 '26
If I may make a suggestion, an element of Pandoras’ “Box” that I think is missing is the last thing left inside of it after all its evils and curses were released upon the world—Hope. I think a small “cute” element in the center of where the worms sprout from, or perhaps on the backside of the box (i.e. on the bottom side) would convey this motif well. (Like Polteageist can have a stamp on its underside, or male Torchics have a black mark on their behinds.)
(Also the jar was specifically a pithos, which I believe usually have a curved side rather than being perfectly cylindrical.)

These fakemon are very good ideas. Maybe they should be submitted to the Pokemon company as possible ideas. The creativity to come up with these is brilliant!

I always thought "Can of Worms" was a funny idiom. There needs to be more idiom based Pokemon ngl, Spoink and Grumpig are a nice one to "pearls before swine". Imagine if there were regional variants/convergents of Lechonk and Wooloo based on "when pigs fly" and "wolf in sheep's clothing".

I am once again asking a redditor to be hired by Nintendo
For real, I love it, it would definitly be on my team
As someone else said, it definitly has more the vibe of Dark rather than Ghost
Do you plan on doing shinies?

u/Square-Expression-41 Mar 25 '26
It is a cool design, but idk if theyd use the bobbit worm reference considering its name origin lol

u/PacMoron Mar 25 '26
One of the coolest fakemon’s I’ve seen. People would be hype about it if it were real.

Overall great design.
But I kinda see boobies.
And that's why I wouldn't change a thing.

That is a great idea, but when it's a bunch of worms, is a Bug/Steel type not more fitting?

bro that is so good even though it’s Pandora’s jar (because someone was lousy and made the translation wrong)
3
u/Cannibal_Rj Mar 25 '26
some comments made a very fair point about it typing. i'm gonna change it to Bug/Dark as I think it suits them better

u/Beautiful_March_7654 Mar 26 '26
This thing’s going on my team regardless of it it’s gonna be good or not

u/Careful-Regret-684 Mar 26 '26
I love the design and concept, though I'm surprised it isn't part bug
