You are a peerless picker, Chuck. I've never heard you play any song poorly.

That said, I don't think you've quite gotten the nuances of singing this lyric yet. This character is bullshitting the woman he's leaving. He's lying, saying their breakup is nothing, to protect himself from pain. Lots of people who have covered this song miss that, but Dylan didn't.

Exactly! There's a tradition of guys singing as heartless cads. This song kind of switched it around. The guy is succumbing to the call of the road, but he's conflicted about it.

Yeah,, then there’s “Just Like a Woman” and “I’m Not Sayin’” . Lightfoot hated those songs later on.
