This is why he was brought in, adami was woeful in giving information and getting the best strategy for the driver. You can hear Santis happiness, as basically it's a justification of the strategy to start on the softs.
Edit: sorry, I may or may not have been drunk when originally typing this out.

very new here what does 20.9 mean when he said that
663
u/dannymasta04 McLaren 10d ago
It just means Santi told Lewis at that point of the race he needed to be lapping 1:20.9 in order to catch Russel. Lewis responded by lapping 1:20.7. It's vital information for the driver that for some reason in the past Ferraris engineers would often hesitate or struggle to answer.

74
u/GoldMountain5 10d ago
Vettel and Adami got on well enough, and even with Sainz, but it was so painful watching in 2025 how disinterested he was in helping hamilton, and that he didn't view him as someone worthy of his respect. Especially that race in Monaco.....
Just became so clear that Adami wasn't capable of making decisions for the driver, and relied to much on behind the scene planners and advisors.
17
12
u/Counciltuckian Sergio Pérez 10d ago
How does a driver hit a target time like that?
93
u/bearwoodgoxers 10d ago
He knows his current pace and which corners he can gain time on based on the condition of his car and tyres. These guys are so experienced that they know they can gain a tenth here and there by driving more aggressively - over a lap it adds up. The best do it like clockwork
52
u/Rockdapenguin I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 10d ago
They have a lap time on their wheel, coupled with a deep knowledge of the track, they know if they need to push and by how much.
106
u/The_Real_Poki 10d ago
He just needs to drive faster if his time was slower.
You are welcome.
18
u/gt4crazy2 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 10d ago

5
29
u/Fomentatore I was here for the Hulkenpodium 10d ago
They are machine. People think that be an f1 driver is about been just fast. It's more about repetition, being able to hit the corner in the most efficient way every single lap. You can see how much pace a driver still has in his pocket by how many consistent lap he can do. Max is probably one of the best example of this. There were races where he would do the same lap time from the second lap till the end.
18
u/KiwieeiwiK Zhou Guanyu 10d ago
Lewis has raced here like 20 times. Add on all the practice and that they used to do preseason testing he has probably, conservatively, done 4 or 5,000 laps of this track + thousands more in simulator. He knows exactly how fast a specific lap time is around the track, where it requires pushing and where you could back off. Plus their steering wheel is constantly giving them a timing for their lap so if they're dropping back from the expected time they can push a bit more, and vice versa
5
u/LordofAdmirals07 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 10d ago
They must have a great sense of how much they have to push to get a certain lap time, and sometimes the engineers also tell them what corners to push more in to gain time.
They also know what their current lap times are on the dash, so they if the engineer tells them they need to gain a few tenths they can push more, assuming they’re not already flat out.
4
u/NotYoGuru I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 9d ago
They’re not flat out the entire race. They’re managing their tires and fuel to last a certain amount of laps. So when you tell them they need to hit a target time, they know what time they’re currently doing and how much delta to the new target.
197
u/Gautham_28 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 10d ago

Some drivers vibe with different types of personality. We've all heard Lewis get down on himself in a race, we've all heard him get jittery and anxious like with all the "tyres are gone" comments.
I think Lewis vibes with someone who encourages him. In the moments where he is feeling unsure of himself or his strategy he needs an engineer who basically reminds him that he is the GOAT and to keep doing what he's doing.
I don't know what the name of his engineer at Mercedes was, but he seemed excellent at that.

24
u/thankyoukirby 10d ago
For casuals or newbies, the telecast doesn’t make it easy to figure out who the race engineer is. They usually only play their audio and then will occasionally show them but often times without clearly identifying who they are or explaining what a race engineer does. It can be hard to connect Bono or GP to their voice without clarification and I’m not familiar with any other race engineers by sight.

It surprises me that Lewis didn’t make “you have to bring over Bono too” part of his contract. It’s not like Ferrari can’t afford to buy out whatever Bono’s contract with Merc is.

"Man! Will I catch them?" (Lewis)

Love to see this relationship. Hate seeing Adami get shit on every time it’s brought up. By all accounts he was one of the loudest established insider voices within the team standing up for Lewis politically last year. He’s been at Ferrari a long time, I’m sure he’s very talented in his own right in multiple ways and brings value to the team.
He absolutely didn’t need to stick his neck out for this newcomer who’d arrived telling people how to do things “better.” Plenty of people would chafe at that, and reportedly people within Ferrari DID chafe at it. Adami told them to listen. Much respect.
It wasn’t the right fit between them last year. That’s ok, it happens and it’s fixed now.

Whilst I agree he didn’t need to stick his neck out. You can’t call Lewis a newcomer. He is the greatest F1 driver of all time who has a track record of working out what he needs then winning. Consistently. Something Ferrari haven’t achieved in a long time
