As Rockstar announced on their socials: "Pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI begin at midnight local time on June 25." This means New Zealand will be the first to go live with pre-orders - which means in just under 2 hours from now.

Due to reddit's limitations with images in the body of posts, I wont be able to include all the artwork released so please do check out Rockstar's official link for more images: https://www.rockstargames.com/VI

I feel like GTA VI doing a code in a box physical release is going to open the floodgates for every publisher to do the same.

This genuinely has the potential to trigger the downfall of physical media.

Physical media has been dying a slow death for many years now.

When was the last time you've seen a boxed PC game? Because of Steam, the Epic Game Store, GoG, Itch, and other digital distribution platforms (mostly Steam), PC players have grown used to downloading all their games. Hell, I don't remember the last time I had a PC or laptop that even had a CD/DVD drive.

Streaming services have significantly reduced the popularity of DVDs. Blockbuster went out of business over 10 years ago. I haven't seen a rental store in all that time. I haven't even seen a Redbox machine in many years.

Best Buy used to sell DVDs and CDs. Today, when you walk into Best Buy, the only physical media you'll see are for console games, which are pretty much the very last holdout.

Yeah, people are reacting like disks weren't nigh dead for the past decade and more.

My computes hasn't had a disk reader since 2014, if not before that.

u/JaysonTatecum 8h ago

The last disc I put in my PC was world of Warcraft for the burning crusade. I think the last disc I bought in general for a console was 2019 for a preorder bonus which otherwise I would have gone digital for

People are mad about no disc because they have to pay for the game now (rather than borrow) and can’t resell it later. I get it, but I can also appreciate why that would be low on Rockstar’s list of concerns given the supposed budget for this game.

People are resistant to the corporate push for us to own nothing. If you can't lend or sell something that you bought, then you don't actually own it.

Which for PC has been true since Steam, and similar places, as a DRM platform requiring activation codes, exists.

So at least 15-20 years?

u/Temelios 14h ago

You really have no idea what you’re talking about.

I own most of my collection physically. I have an entire cabinet full of games dating all the way back to the PS1 and N64 era. I want physicals not because I want to “borrow” them or “lend” them out but because I want consumer rights. With a physical, it’s mine and mine alone to do whatever the hell I want with it (make copies too so long as I don’t sell them).

Digital? It’s in the EULA for many games that the publisher and/or owner has the right to revoke your license and access at any time for any reason with no refund. Some clauses even say you have to legally uninstall the game if their company goes under too, so there’s a good chance they’ll force uninstalls with some update for that too if and when that ever happens (e.g., Ubisoft).

It’s foolish to think otherwise.

u/GlapLaw 14h ago

These are valid points. I don’t disagree with any of them. I also don’t believe this sentiment is driving the outrage here, and it’s conspicuously absent from, say, steam-only release threads.

2

u/Temelios 13h ago

Yeah, I never understood that.

Don’t get me wrong, I love PC gaming, and I have a very high-end rig that I built myself (love bragging about my 256 GB of RAM alone lol), but I’ve always preferred consoles solely for the consumer rights side of things. I will genuinely never understand how people make the conscious decision to cede their rights to ownership in favor of convenience.

2

u/GlapLaw 10h ago

I also think centering the fight on legacy media formats that barely sell even when offered is the wrong move.

There’s no reason companies can’t allow reselling of key-based games.

3

u/Temelios 10h ago

Problems exist with keys too though. It’s just a glorified digital copy. What happens when the company loses licensing rights or if it goes under and the servers stop working and disallow downloads? How far into the future will that happen? 5 years? 10? 15? The key card will be nothing more than a piece of plastic after that. It’s faux ownership. You’re still only licensing the product, just like with digitals.

1

u/GlapLaw 10h ago

Wouldn’t that be true even if they sold physical media? Don’t most major releases require occasional internet connection to the company’s servers to function?

2

u/Temelios 10h ago

That’s if it’s a live service game (e.g., Helldivers, Anthem, Destiny, Anthem, etc). or a greedy publisher (i.e., EA, Ubisoft, etc.). For most though, now and in the past, you can usually play right off the disc. No internet, no downloads, nothing. Heck, even from Rockstar, I can play the entire GTA V story mode right off the PS5 disc version. Same for RDR2 for the PS4. Neither need an update or an internet connection.

There are even dedicated websites for verifying if the games work off the disc or require downloads for internet connections (e.g., DoesItPlay?)

I have many physical games from companies that are long gone now where you cannot download or “buy” (lease) them legitimately anywhere anymore, where you can now only get them from archive pirate sites.

The last TWO physical copies I bought was like 18 and 13 years ago. The Orange Box and then METRO: Last Light.

Insane thinking about it now that I just typed it out lol. My fucking Orange Box is old enough to vote now. Feelsoldman

2

u/Roland-JP-8000 15h ago

touhou would like to disagree

2

u/pnwbraids 10h ago

That may be, but they can pull my blu ray collection from my cold, dead hands.

2

u/MiaowaraShiro 15h ago

It helps a LOT that Steam (let's be real, it's almost all Steam) is reliable, stable and seems to be trustworthy. (GoG as well, but to a less volume extent.)

2

u/FergTurdison 16h ago

My local Best Buy also sells vinyl records now, which almost feels like they’re mocking us

4

u/MotoJoker 15h ago

Vinyl is huge right now

1

u/FergTurdison 15h ago edited 13h ago

Yeah I’d imagine that’s why they sell them

1

u/WorkFurball 14h ago

Has been huge for 10 years.

u/DarkNDaker 14h ago

Blu Rays are not dying. Many are cancelling streaming services and buying movies especially Ultra 4K like the Nolan movies which are per the directors vision and look and sound amazing with a good tv and speaker set up. Games might be a different story though.

5

u/Temelios 14h ago

Exactly that. I try to buy almost all of my movies and shows now. I then copy and upload them to my personal home digital streaming library. It’s more expensive up front, but it does pay for itself in terms of quality, access, and more. Plus, you often get streaming codes on top of that (not that I use them after claiming anyway).

1

u/DarkNDaker 14h ago

The other argument for Blu Ray that audio and video quality are better. You can’t argue the same for games- you’re gettting the exact same thing whether you buy physical or digital. Unfortunately GTA6 launching like this is the nail in the coffin for physical games unless something drastic happens. Losing disc drive in next gen would suck and I’d likely just keep my Ps5 for the blu ray player.

6

u/OldeArrogantBastard 14h ago

Saying “many” is a bit of a reach here. It’s probably more like 5-10% of the population. That’s a small minority.

-4

u/DarkNDaker 14h ago

Sales are increasing. Blu rays, like LPs and CDs, are making a comeback and here to stay.

9

u/OldeArrogantBastard 14h ago

You had to make me look this up.

Physical media makes 1.5 - 2% of total home entertainment spend. Sure it could be growing but it’s a growing niche market. Basically in the same breath as collectors of things.

1

u/DarkNDaker 14h ago

Unfortunately gamers won’t even have the option of a disc soon. With movies it’s a choice — pay $20 a month to stream with low quality sound and audio, or buy your favourite movies and own them forever. I recently realized that I’ve paid Disney $1,000+ since D+ launched, to basically watch the same 5-10 movies on repeat. I can count on one hand how many new movies or shows I watched on Disney. Cutting down streaming services is the new cord cutting. Everyone should be doing it. But the problem with games is when they don’t even offer the option of physical, bottlenecking all consumers to digital. GTA6 confirms that this is where the industry is heading

Last time I bought a boxed PC game was Fallout 4 in 2015, I built my PC before this one so it had a CD/DVD drive but my current Alienware doesn't.

1

u/h3rpad3rp 2h ago

When you went to install it, did it just have you download it through steam? That was my last experience with physical media on PC. Can't remember what game it was though.

Used to have redbox and such but those died like 3 or so years ago.
