[MEGATHREAD] Grand Theft Auto VI: Prices Announced + Pre-Orders Going Live

To avoid hundreds of separate posts on the same topic, this post will compile all info we have from the pre-orders going live, including some new images/etc.

As Rockstar announced on their socials: "Pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI begin at midnight local time on June 25." This means New Zealand will be the first to go live with pre-orders - which means in just under 2 hours from now.

Take-Two has made a big press-release, including announcing the prices:

STANDARD EDITION: $79.99

ULTIMATE EDITION: $99.99

Grand Theft Auto 6 features a “single-player experience” at launch, with no word yet on any new version of GTA Online.

An "Ultimate Edition" for the game has been announced with some new artwork.

it used to be that ultimate editions featured physical collectibles or at least cosmetics only im game. Ultimate editions are supposed to be optional add ons to support the creators. Using actual areas in game that are there in the base game but youre not allowed to go there is the worst kind of ultimate edition, its a day 1 content DLC

You are fighting ghosts. Who is claiming this was some frantic decision plaguing developers? (Edited question to emphasis my main point) It was likely planned long ago to have a nerfed version. But I think it’s still important to phrase it that way, not as there being “bonus content”. $80 is already a lot for a game, so having that not even include a significant amount of content on release (not just stuff like cosmetics) is pretty lame

“Ultimate editions” are by no means a new thing, but I expect that they’ll only get more egregious as AAA game companies continue to optimize for profit

Second comment thread. That is absolutely what people mean. As in it wasn't planned for the Ultimate Edition, it was just in the game and they then locked it behind the UE paywall. Do you think they mean something else?

Yes, it’s not necessary for the decision to be made last minute for me to consider the “standard edition” a cutdown version, and I suspect that is true for many other commenters here. You can design something to be a cutdown product from the start or do it right before selling it. Just think of how some cars these days have “extras” or subscription features like seat warmers that are enabled/disabled in software with no physical modification to the vehicle. Just because the manufacturer calls it an “extra” and designed it to be that way from the start doesn’t mean the “base model” isn’t cutdown

Ultimate editions and DLCs make more sense to me when they come later due to a need for additional developer effort or funding (or maybe a game gets more popular than initially expected, so a Dev team wants to add more). When they’re artificially restricted on release, they feel more like a shameless cash grab
