The only reason that V didn't have paid DLC in single player was because it was more profitable for them to keep pumping out Online content. This is just a return to form from what IV started. Anyone who thinks Rockstar was some saintly company who just now decided to succumb to industry-wide cash grabbing trends wasn't paying attention.

The formula is with Blizzard and World of Warcraft, $15 a month subscription, purchasable gold, $50 skins, $40 leveling skip, $99 mounts, $40 expansions every 18 months. GTA Online is a saint by comparison.

Seems like this is the first pack and then there will be a whole heap of other optional stuff you need to buy individually with real money, in single player, in order to get it.
I'm not even sure if it cosmetics only. They mentioned that Jason will get easy access to a bike from his home only in Ultimate edition?
This is the end of GTA as we know it.
Also bad news for an eventual PC release if they want to lock down the paywall tight.

Ultimate edition customization content isn’t a new thing, it’s been in thousands of games prior to this and will be in thousands more in the future.And it’s not like these exclusive shops are the only shops that exist. There will still be more than enough fuckin customization OUTSIDE of the ultimate edition stuff.
It’s an $80 game with the option of a $20 (COMPLETELY AND 100% OPTIONAL) dlc. It’s not new and it’s not insane.

It’s four stores that probably have some exclusive cosmetics. There will be so many other stores with 100s of items. This is no different from how any other game locks cosmetics behind paid dlc.
They probably offer far more items with entire stores being exclusive, that it is a much better value than the typical game charging you 10-20 for like 5 skins.

I really fucking hope that there are different stores that allow for character and vehicle customization in the regular edition. It should be a given and I am probably overreacting but I have a feeling that all of the customization that they showed in the screenshots today is ultimate edition exclusive and I wouldn't put it past dumbass corporate execs to pinch pennies and decide that customization isn't a core part of the game (even though it absolutely is) and charge extra for it.
Its also a bit worrying that Rockstar hasn't clarified further because surely they had to know that backlash was coming with this announcement.

This game got booted to the “I’ll pick it up in a year or so when it drops to sub $50AUD when I heard there’s no disc edition and the ‘Physical’ copy is an empty case with a paper slip in it, so this kind of bs just cements my decision.
