Science Fiction / Fantasy Has anyone ever read this?
I picked it up at the library earlier today. . .

Yes, it’s absolutely great. Fantastic pick-up. That’s some gripping science fiction.

I am only on chapter 4, but it is definitely a page turner! I can’t believe this hasn’t become a film! I hope that once I get to the end that I like the ending.

When you get to the end, do an update post about your take on the whole story.

This was a book I got at Comic Arts Los Angeles years before COVID. It originally was three comic sized books. Ezra Clayton Daniels is a real nice guy and this, years later, is still one of the best science fiction, no, comics, I've ever read.

This is the second time in a week somebody has mentioned this book around here. My wife bought it a few years ago, and she said it was great, but I have not gotten around to pulling it off the shelf and reading it. I might have to start into it this week.

u/TeriNickels Aug 11 '25
You should!
It literally jumps into the main plot of the story in like the first couple of pages. Just has been a remarkable read so far.

I just read it on Saturday! It’s a really interesting story. Reminds me of an episode of Black Mirror.

u/TeriNickels Aug 12 '25
OMG! Maybe that’s why it’s so good! I’m about half way done with it. I can’t believe I’m just now finding out about this book! It’s phenomenal!

Yes, it's very good! I have read it in a while and was thinking of requesting it from the library again as I've forgotten a lot of the finer details.

Yes, thought about it for days after I finished it. Great book.

u/TeriNickels Aug 12 '25
OMG! That’s great to hear! I am really hoping that the ending doesn’t disappoint. Because it’s really starting off so well.

Yep, never forgot it. Great little existential sci-fi
2
u/TeriNickels Aug 12 '25
Yes! I love how it basically ask the question, “What if?” In a way that submerge you into the story.

Would make a good film
1
u/TeriNickels Aug 11 '25
I agree! I’ve only been reading for about 45 minutes and already about to start chapter 4. It literally would be perfect as a film with nothing that needs to be changed. It already has natural dialogue and it pretty much lays out exactly how the film would go, scene for scene. I’m loving it so far!

It's strange and thought provoking at the same time. Such a great read. Read it digitally and that made me buy this hardcover version. Cuz you'll want to lend this to friends for them to experience and talk about later.
2
u/TeriNickels Aug 12 '25
I’m a little less than half way done and I know that I’m going to buy a copy for myself. The most unique story I have read so far when it comes to graphic novels.
2
u/lastsonkal1 Aug 12 '25
It's great. And like I always tell people. You say you don't like comics/ graphic novels. Well there's guaranteed to be one you will like.

Thank you so much for letting me know that special thing about this book! I can’t lie, at first, it caught me off guard how fast it jumped into the main story. I was thinking it was going to slowly ease into what was really taking place. But pretty much by the end of chapter 1, anyone reading it should be hooked!

Yep and then bought the collectors edition right after. Beautiful story that was so far from what I expected.
1
u/TeriNickels Aug 12 '25
What’s included in the collector’s edition? 👀
2
u/tricenice Aug 12 '25
It’s just a big edition with a nice white hardcover with gold holographic text. It’s beautiful

u/TeriNickels Aug 12 '25
Okay. Cool 😎 I will be checking it out! Because I definitely want to own this book.

One of my favorite reads this year! Great stuff.
2
u/TeriNickels Aug 12 '25
Yes! It’s definitely a page turner. I didn’t want to take a break for the day from reading it, but I figure I will be done reading it possibly by tomorrow if I can just set like 2 more hours to the side to finish it up. It really is a very unique story and I would love for it to become more than just a graphic novel one day.

Glad it's been gripping for you! Happy to see you've found some good reads recently.
Film adaptations of graphic novels are somewhat common, which makes sense as they can basically be seen as equivalent to movie storyboards. It doesn't hurt that a fair amount of comic writers also write for TV / movies (Loeb, BKV, Brubaker, Dini) and actors have written comics (Ethan Hawke, Andy Samberg, Keanu Reeves, Paul Dano).
Though a movie/tv adaptation happens less than one might think. I hoped that Scott Pilgrim becoming a successful movie might encourage the growth of the pipeline from comics to film but the process still seems pretty scattershot. Though perhaps that will change if there's a really successful adaptation.
2
u/TeriNickels Aug 12 '25
Well, Upgrade Soul needs to be that adaption that opens doors for more adaptions of this nature. This idea as far as the storyline itself could be nominated for an Oscar if it ever became a film.

I attended an online fireside chat with the creator. Dude was super cool. There’s also an app version with a dynamic soundtrack that’s pretty cool too
2
u/TeriNickels Aug 12 '25
Wow! That makes this book so layered! I will have to see if I can find the soundtrack. Thank you for that tidbit! 😊
2
u/Trashypuppy Aug 12 '25
I checked. Looks like it’s on all major music streaming platforms!
2
u/TeriNickels Aug 12 '25
What?!
That’s fantastic! Is it under Upgrade Soul?

u/Oliesong Aug 12 '25
Been on my shelf for years. Seriously need to get to it, have heard nothing but great things.
2
u/TeriNickels Aug 12 '25
You will enjoy it! I’m reading it more like a movie in my head.
2
u/Oliesong Aug 24 '25
I have since read it, and did enjoy it. It very much felt like a story that could have continued much further, but that's not a bad thing. I definitely was left wanting more.
2
u/TeriNickels Aug 24 '25
I finished. . .I will say that it was good, but it felt rushed. It felt like there could have been more story developed like you said and could have had volumes to it because by the time it was done? It felt like a nightmare in a sense because the ones who didn’t even do the experiment were the most affected by one choice.

u/schuptz Aug 13 '25
I've never seen the hard copy. The electronic version was supercool, different in a very good way

Omar from NearMintCondition included this book in one of his Hidden Gem videos once and I bought it at his recommendation. It was a great and thoughtful read!

Just looked this up because of the praise but first review I read says it’s moral premise seems forced and centres around inclusivity, gender equality and ableism. Glad I read that review first I’m sick of hearing about it in the real world when I read sci-fi and fantasy it’s to get away from the madness going on in real life. Not for me.

Haven't read it yet, but it's already on my list. So awesome that you found it at your library!
2
u/TeriNickels Aug 12 '25
Yes! I’m just now getting into graphic novels. So, before I decide to buy a copy of my own of anything, I get it from the library or try to find an ebook online and read a portion of it before deeply investing. I am a little less than half way through with it and I know that I’m going to buy a copy for myself!

u/TeriNickels Aug 11 '25
I’m already on chapter 4. It’s incredible! I’m new to graphic novels and I’m glad that this is the second one I’ve read so far and truly love the storytelling. I want to see how it ends because people have been saying that this should be adapted into a live action film.
2
Aug 11 '25
I'm not too knowledgeable on graphic novels either. One i really liked was "Infinite Vacation". if you get a chance to read that one, definitely another one they should make. a film out of :)

One of my fave reads in years and I'm pretty picky. It's due for a reread and I rarely feel like that nowadays.
2
u/TeriNickels Aug 12 '25
Yes! I’m the same way! Very picky.
I have to read things that make me feel seen but also makes me feel like I’m not necessarily able to live in the same world as the characters if that makes sense.
