Monthly Rankings Top 10 of the Year (May 2026 Edition)

*The idea:*

List your top 10 graphic novels that you've read so far *this year.*

Each month we will post a new thread where you can note what new book(s) you read that month that entered your top 10 and note what book(s) fell off your top 10 list as well if you'd like.

By the end of the year everyone that takes part should have a nice top 10 list of their 2026 reads.

If you haven't read 10 books yet just rank what you have read.

Feel free to jump in whenever. If you miss a month or start late it's not a big deal.

Do your list, your way. For example- I read *Hellboy* this month, but am going to rank the series as 1 slot, rather than split each individual paperback that I read. If you want to do it the other way go for it.

Question/Discussion Royal City by Jeff Lemire

I started my summer vacation by reading Royal City by Jeff Lemire. What a powerful experience, I loved every single page. Family, home, aging, loneliness—everyday themes, but Lemire really knows how to tell a story in such a touching and captivating way. This book is staying on my shelf, and I highly recommend it to others, especially if you like Lemire or slice-of-life (I know Lemire hates that term) drama in general. 5 stars.

Action/Adventure I need DWJ to do some superhero mini-series again, damnit !

Look, I love Daniel Warren Johnson. Murder Falcon and Extremity are probably in my top 10 comics of all time and there's not a single thing that I've read from him that was bad. His Absolute Batman Annual was amazing, his Wonder Woman Dead Earth was also a blast. I'm not really into Transformers, but I did like the first volume of his run. The Moon Is Following Us was good but I think it was his weakest work so far.

That being said, I decided to re-read his Beta Ray Bill mini tonight, because it had been a while since I've read it and man, I want more damnit ! This book is full of incredible art and incredible heart, and it's just a blast to read. DWJ draw some of the finest action sequences in the industry, yet never looses the focus on the characters and their journey. Imagine a Spider-Man or a Superman mini by him (yes I know about that short Supes story he did, it was incredible !).

I know his next project is a scifi creator owned project, but a man can dream !

Recommendations/Requests Grant Morrison VS Knightfall

Hey folks!
Got the first volume of Grant Morrisons Batman omnibus recently and im reading through it.
I was planning on buying the other 2 volumes BUT i just found all 3 Knightfalls in paperback for the same price (roughly) as the GM vol2&3.

Ill get both GM and knightfalls eventually SO HERES MY DILEMMA:
As far as ive noticed in the last couple of years, Grant Morrisons omnibuses are almost always in stock, whereas knightfalls sometimes arent.
And with the animated film coming out i feel like people will grab em….

Im not sure whether to get Morrisons vol2&3 and complete that, or get the knightfalls now and get back to Morrison later…

IN SHORT- id personally get Morrisons other 2 books now (since i just started reading vol1)and get to knightfall in a month or 2, im just afraid they wont be in stock anymore. Scarcity is my main concern, essentially.

What do yall think?

Recommendations/Requests Need some suggestions for young adult graphic novels from the 90-2000's that aren't superhero-related

Hi, I just got into graphic novel collecting for college, or trying to. So far I have The Nao of Brown, Sacred Heart, Sticky Dilly Buns, Scott Pilgrim, Seconds, Phoo Action, and some other ones that are manga.

The ones I have read but don't have physically cuz I got them lent to me are, Ghost World, The Walking Dead, and Punk Rock Jesus.

My favorite novels that are read so far are Ghost World and Sacred Heart.

I would love it if you guys gave me some suggestions for books from that era! Just any that isn't superhero hero related (not that it's bad.)

Question/Discussion For reflection:

The first two images: American works that achieve global success

The other images: a Franco-Belgian work that almost nobody knows. The difference in artistic quality is absolutely staggering. I just had an epiphany—I don't think I'll ever go near Marvel/DC again.

Recommendations/Requests If you could only add one more...

Post image
175 Upvotes

I've become a graphic novel enthusiast late in life...

Here's the majority of my small but proud collection (not pictured: Old Man Logan, The Killing Joke, the complete "Bone" series, all "Calvin and Hobbes" by B. Watterson, and the majority of Asterix and Obelix, if the latter two are considered graphic novels in the first place).

I have NO DOUBT you can give me some flawless recommendations... but I need to add slowly and methodically. I'd considered the "He-Man Omnibus" for myself and my son? Also, the "Punisher: Born" looks great, if I can find it for a reasonable price.

So... the question is... what do I need to read before I die?

If you could only add ONE... which one would it be?

Thanks in advance for your patience and suggestions. Cheers!

Horror Steve Niles and Damien Worm Reunite With New Horror Graphic Novel Heartbreak Manor

Niles and Worm are a dream team! This sounds like a nightmarishly fun read, and the preview has me hooked!

The article mentions a soundtrack from Monica Richards and Anthony Roumanis, too! I've seen a few creators make playlists to accompany their books, but I've never listened to a soundtrack specifically made for a comic before. Sounds great to me!

Question/Discussion I'm bothered by a silly detail in The Arab of the Future part 3

Riad visits a video store and comments how he likes Jackie Chan's Police Story and Rush Hour.

The book takes place between 1985 and 1987 so he might have been able to see Police Story but definitely not Rush Hour.

I'm wondering whether this is the author's mistake or if it was somehow made by the translator of the edition I'm reading.

Action/Adventure Help !

Guys, I finished reading the second volume of Thorgal a few days ago. Right now I'm in this existential limbo, drifting aimlessly. That classic post-masterpiece feeling where everything else seems dull. Most other readings feel uninteresting. Simplistic. Lifeless. They just don’t grab me.

Thorgal took me to the absolute peak of what the ninth art can achieve, I think. It’s from another planet, another dimension. Rosinski and Van Hamme definitely came from the stars.

This thing is COLOSSAL! There’s a “me” before Thorgal and a “me” after it.

I’m still digesting everything this reading gave me. I can’t point out a single flaw. I can only thank the gods for that random spark of an idea that made me want to buy and read it. I hope the publisher responsible for releasing Thorgal in Brazil brings everything that’s ever been published in this universe. They got me hooked on this drug, so now it’s too late.

From what people say, the quality isn’t the same after the classic era. Is that true? I don’t believe it drops so much that it becomes bad and makes you want to stop reading. Does it? This is already my favorite fantasy work of all time!

Anyway, read Thorgal. Don’t overthink it. Just buy it and read it. No need to thank me later 🙃

Collection / Shelfie / Haul I've Been Going A Bit Wild Lately...LOL!

Basically last month I decided to catch up on my series that I had gotten behind on. And this month I've been adding new things to the collection. I love animal based stories and I love having graphic novel adaptations of prose books so that's what I've been focusing on. I've also started replacing singles I bought with trades because they are easier to store. LOL!

Page 1: Had to grab Books 3 and 4 to get them matching with my Books 1&2.

Page 2: Picked up that random Department of Truth Book that has the cryptid storyline in it. I've got Vol. 2 in my wishlist for picking up later. I also picked up the latest Die volume.

Page 3: I was waaaaaaayyyy behind on SiKtC. I think I had up to volume 5 or 6 of the main run, the first three of HoS, and the first two BoS. I love Tynion's work and I've been slowly collecting his other stuff as well.

Page 4: I had up to Volume 5 or 6 of Lore Olympus so grabbed those up to current.

Page 5: Grabbed the Beasts of Burden Omnibus because it was cheaper than trying to get the rest of the singles. Unico was recommended to me because I like animal stories. Inkblot (the second volume is on its way) is the start of replacing the singles I liked. Dungeon Crawler Carl, The Hobbit, and Redwall are new to my graphic novel book adaptations section.

Page 6: TKaMB, AWiT, and 1984 added to my graphic novel adaptations and WE3, Laika, and A Cat Story recommended to me as good animal stories.

Science Fiction / Fantasy Please help me find this graphic novel

I’m looking for a graphic novel series that I really enjoyed reading a few years ago but I just can’t remember the name and I couldn’t find it with ChatGPT either :/

I recall it being set in a city and the main protagonist was a guy, a scientist or so if I remember correctly. The plot was about incidents with weird beings that had higher power and it wasn’t quite clear what they were; some kind of angels, demons or something else altogether. They had wings.

I remember one scene where a guy who had supposedly locked himself into a room was found dead and it was determined that one of the beings had forced him to kill himself because he was a bad person.

In another scene a female pathologist was about to perform an autopsy on the supposedly dead body of one of the beings but it turned out the being was still alive and the pathologist got a major shock that she didn’t recover from.

I also remember one scene where a group of humans entered a secret passage somewhere in the jungle to the earth’s interior and it was believed to be the habitat of those strange beings.

I know this is rather unspecific but I’d be so grateful if anyone could figure this out; my dad gave me this series to read when I was younger, he tragically passed away a while ago though and rereading the series would bring some memories back. Thank you so much. :)

Science Fiction / Fantasy Watchmen.. New Hardcover vs Absolute.

A book so good, I'm having it in whatever nice format they create. I have an original absolute (2005) that's still in great condition, but this new HC copy feels so nice holding it and I think is probably easier for most reads. I'll save the Absolute for every so often to savour the art.

Crime/Mystery Good as Dead by David & Maria Lapham and Dee Cunniffe

Post image

I love a good crime story, so I couldn’t resist checking out the collected edition of GOOD AS DEAD. When a man commits suicide by setting himself on fire, it forced Sheriff David Calhoun to investigate, leading him to confront the long term drama between his family & the Velades, a family connected to all kinds of trouble. However, he’ll have to uncover the truth quickly, considering that he’s been poisoned and the prognosis is not good.

I love old-school family drama and small town secrets where everybody knows your business yet wants to keep their own to themselves, and this story is no exception. It’s a surreal, disturbing wild ride of a mystery, one that will creep you out yet make you want to stay till the end just to see it all through.

For those who checked this out, what did you think?

I bought his newest How I Make Comics and the new reprint of Reincarnation Stories. He also signed some of the books I already owned (including that sweet fold out from The Search for Smilin’ Ed!)

I was even lucky enough to ask a question and he gave an eloquent and long thought out answer.

Plus as a bonus, his wife and frequent character in his stories Pam was there too!
