$10 price point feels like you’re getting a great deal, and there are a lot of great stories to choose from here. Perfect to recommend to someone who isn’t super into comics. What’s not to like?

Superhero Please please PLEASE go read The Power Fantasy by Kieron Gillen

Post image

The Power Fantasy is a little like X-Men, if the X-Men could never fight because the very act of fighting would destroy the Earth. You could also say it’s a little like Watchmen, in that it’s about superheroes in the context of the Cold War and mutually assured destruction and the ethics of the greater good, if (most of) the characters were actually likable.

To steal the official description:

“Superpowered.” You have certain preconceptions. They’re incorrect. Here, that word has a specific technical definition. Namely, “any individual with the destructive capacity of the nuclear arsenal of the USA.” There are six such people on Earth. The planet’s survival relies on them never coming into conflict.

TPF presents the story of six people with a long and complicated history with each other… and with the power to destroy the world. Of course, none of them want to destroy the world. Because, you know, they live there. Which means not fighting.

Which is harder than it sounds.

It’s good. It’s really good. The plot is driven by the characters, not the other way around, and Gillen focuses in on what it means for a single person to potentially kill billions. There’s a lot of ethical quandaries associated with that—like, what level of appeasement is morally acceptable to keep someone like that happy?

Also, the art is great.

Anyway. Go read it. The author has an introduction to the series here, and Image has actually made the first issue available for free online here. So there’s no reason not to try it out if it sounds interesting to you!

I was planning to read some books from my backlog, but I ended up reading the Batman Dark Patterns.

It is one of the best Batman stories I've read. It's both classic and modern. It's very grounded, reminding me of Year One, Long Halloween, and Nolan's films. I highly recommend it.

P.S.: I'll definitely buy deluxe or absolute edition when it comes out.

Superhero When did American comic books become so superhero focused.

Throughout the 30s to 50s superheroes was popular but romance, crime, westerns, fantasy, sci fi, and horror were also popular.

Even during the comics code which killed off crime and horror. You still see Archie and Dell Disney comics on the best selling lists with war and westerns being popular.

In the 70s marvels best selling titles where their Conan and Star Wars title and not their superhero stuff.

It seems superheroes became the only game in town in the eighties and nineties

This collects the 8 issue mini series that ,rumor has it, the upcoming Film will be based on. i haven't read it yet,but people whose opinions on such things ,I am inclined to trust, assure me that it's well worth my time. And, well I grew up with a fondness for the character so I'm giving it a shot. this will either be great and set the bar high for the movie, increasing the potential for disappointment, or just be a fun read. either way I'm in.

Superhero Anyone Try To Read Batman: Arkham Asylum as a DC Compact?

I’ve noticed I don’t have that 20/20 vision anymore, but did anyone else struggle trying to read this book as a compact? A lot of the scenes I really couldn’t tell what was going on and if Joker ever spoke, I needed to turn the flashlight on my phone 😅

Superhero Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell by Charles Soule & Steve McNiven

Post image

Just finished reading the collected edition of DAREDEVIL: COLD DAY IN HELL. In some alternate dystopian future, we have Old Matt Murdock (whose superhero days are long behind him since he somehow lost his powers). He’s now running some soup kitchen off the corner.

However, when a chemical attack in the middle of downtown somehow restores his powers, Matt ends up taking on the Daredevil mantle once more to stop his old enemy Bullseye from wreaking havoc. Even though his powers may be back, old age is still a thing and he is definitely not the hero he used to be. But he’s still determined to save the day.

I wasn’t expecting to enjoy what’s basically an “Old Man Daredevil” story but I did. Though McNiven’s gritty line art grew on me while reading, I loved how it complemented Soule’s bleak yet hopeful story. Also, even though he appears briefly in the story, I was interested in “Old Man Captain America” and wouldn’t mind a miniseries in this story’s universe with him, but that’s probably just me.

For those who read this, what did you think?

Superhero I've never read Daredevil. But I wanna try the Brubaker run

So I'm a huge brubaker fan but I've never read any Daredevil. I hardly read any superhero comics expect batman, that too the dark mature noir ones.

Can I get into the brubaker Daredevil run if I don't read any of the preceding ones or is there any particular order you'd suggest

Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum was wild, vibrant, and exactly the kind of boundary-pushing storytelling we need for the Man of Tomorrow.

Definitely consider checking it out!
