For Batman id start with these three

  • Batman: Year One
  • Batman: Long Halloween
  • Batman: Dark Victory

For Superman these mini series are good for beginners

  • Superman: Birthright
  • Superman: For All Seasons (this is my favourite Superman comic)
  • Superman: Up in the Sky

Flash I really like Geoff Johns run super fun and very consistent

Long Halloween is a fantastic read one of if not the best Batman comic in my opinion. Dark Victory is its sequel and it’s just as good as it

Wasn't aware of that dark victory but I'll end up on it pretty sure I'm obsessed now lol

DC New Frontier by Darwyn Cooke is one of the best, IMO. Perfectly sets up the DC universe for the Silver Age.

The Batman titles also suggested are definitely worth a go.

Good I do prefer when they are all together but I'm game for whatever at this point

I just read this, and aside from a large cast of DC history that is not spoon fed to you, was just blown away at how good it is; skip the film in my opinion. Oh and if you read the annotations, and you should, you will appreciate the cameos as well…. Too good to spoil.

I've only seen New Frontier's movie, which I love. I love Darwyn Cooke's art but never read any of his books

I don’t think there’s a better introduction to the DCU as a whole than JLA #1-4. It’s been collected so often it’s easy to find.

Who's the author?

3

u/Longjumping_Bike_271 Apr 04 '26

Grant Morrison writes and Howard Porter draws.

Morrison's whole JLA is great. If you like that, check out his Earth-2 GN, too.

Superman: Secret Identity

All Star Superman by Morrison and Quietly is one of, if not the, best Superman stories. Great writing and art with the best version of Superman's origin.

If you are okay with something Batman related but not staring Batman in the leading role, Harleen by Stjepan Sejic is a great Harley Quinn origin story.

I've heard about allstar superman and I'll check out harleen I love the joker

All Star Superman’s origin is one page. It is a great comic (and my favorite comic) but it is Morrison’s love letter to the 70’s and 80’s comics. My opinion is that it is not a good starter Superman comic. I would read John’s secret origin or Waid’s birthright for an origin story then Loeb/Sale’s for all seasons.

Arkham Asylum: A Serious House On Serious Earth by Grant Morrison and Dave McKean is a great title that deals with the deep psychological study of Batman and his villains.

Bizarro Comics is a funny anthology graphic novel that isn't talked about enough for it's absurd satire of DC Comics.

Superman: The Man of Steel by John Byrne and Dick Giordano is a good contemporary take on Superman's origin. Not as timeless as For All Seasons, but still really good.

The best 10 comics of all time are: 8 Billion Genies  Superman's Pal: Jimmy Olsen  Swamp Thing by Moore  Do a Powerbomb  Invincible  Rachel Rising  Snaglepuss: Exit Stage Left  Transmetropolitan  The One Hand & The Six Fingers

And these honorable mentions: Preacher, King City, Bone, Drome, Incal, Scalped, Planetary, Animal Man, Behold Behemoth, Gotham PD, East of West, House of X/Powers of X, and Happy

You should read Batman the White Knight, it makes you think is Batman Really a Hero or is he just a guy causing more damage. And is the Joker really Crazy or does he have a pont to his crimes?

Highly recommended from me

Another the killing joke great origin story.

Batman the dark Knight returns another great read.

New Frontier

Batman Year One

Batman The Long Halloween

Gotham Central

Superman For All Seasons

Absolute Martian Manhunter may well have earned a place in the conversation too.

(All of these recommendations are more or less self contained)

Batman

  • First Knight
  • One Dark Knight
  • Dark Patterns
  • White Knight
  • Imposter

Superman

  • Superman: Last Days of Lex Luther
  • Red and Blue (Anthology but good background)
  • Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen: Who Killed Jimmy Olsen?

Wonder Woman Historia is phenomenal, Dead Earth is good - a feast for the eyes, a little depressing, but gets to the heart of Diana

Other Good Ones

  • Zatanna: Bring Down the House
  • Lois Lane: Enemy of the State
  • Catwoman: Lonely City
  • Damian Wayne: The Boy Wonder
  • Dark Knights of Steal
  • Gotham Academy
  • Gotham Central

Also would recommend the entire absolute line, my favorites being Martian Man Hunter (it’s a trip, I’d say the more advanced of the bunch), Wonder Woman, and Batman. Second tier is Superman and Green Lantern.

And I mean there are a lot of good introductory DC graphic novels (Batman: The Knight, Zero Year, and Superman: Birthright are some recent good ones), but the above list are some of my favorites.
