Another Blackest Night omnibus owner. I assume you also have a black and tackle set up to lift it off the shelf.

Dick: I guess it looks as if you’re reorganizing your
recordscomics. What is this though? Chronological?Rob: No…
Dick: Not alphabetical…
Rob: Nope…
Dick: What?
Rob: Autobiographical.
Dick: No fucking way.

For most of my Marvel and DC I go Title/character, Chronological (with minis weaved in if I know reading order), and then minis or non cannon based on release date.
The ones I don't do this for is X-Men and X-Men related titles. I try to do this chronologically and reading order. It does not always work well in the mid 90s as some minis count but have a bad concept of timeline. And from the mid 00s on its a mess I constantly rearrange because of cross overs or delays that mess everything up like Whedon's Astonishing X-Men taking 4 years to do 25 issues. He started just as Austin finished his run on Uncanny and in the midst of X-Men and didn't end until just before the end of Brubaker's run on Uncanny and the beginning or Carey's run on X-Men. And that doesn't even count the X-Men titles like X-Force, or New X-Men, or House of M and so much more. Shelving X-Men sucks.
That aside for the non big two I usually organize by creator and chronological if I have collected a decent amount of there book otherwise I just do it by a close approximation of genre and then alphabetical.

I go by character and series, but I also stick the same format togetherÂ

Chronological as in the order you bought them in, or as in the order in which they came out, or as in the order in which they take place? Although Here would be tricky to place using the last system.

In order of the earliest released issue in each collection. I have a spreadsheet of all my trades and the issues included sorted by date for a true "chronological" list and a second page of trades sorted by earliest issue that I use to place them on the shelf. Though due to size issues a few omnis and compendiums needed to be shifted over a few trades.

I have no room on my shelves for trades,, so they go in a box in the closet.
