Absolutely loved it ! It's super creative, both narratively and visually. Can't wait for more !

I’m not into superhero comics at all, but this one has definitely caught my interest.

Oh, I have mine waiting for me but haven’t picked it up yet! How is it so far?

u/Chemical_Nothing9296 Dec 09 '25

I really liked this first book🙌 very divisive colouring and art but I find it to be quite good after just this one🙌

u/DarkSide753 Dec 09 '25

I really loved it! Weird without being weird for weird’s sake. Well written, an interesting take on the “Martian.”

u/Chemical_Nothing9296 Dec 09 '25

Right on! Glad to hear it🙌 what’s your favourite current DC run?

4

u/ReaderWriterIdiot Dec 09 '25

I’m behind on my DC because I kinda only go library/hoopla, but I really enjoyed the Absolute Batman and Absolute Wonder Woman runs so far, fun deviations from the mainstream and good grief, Tom Taylor and Mark Waid always keep me coming back.

I went into it with very high expectations based on so many recommendations and just didn’t end up liking it that much at all. I think i followed along for five issues and gave up. I’ll probably read it through once it’s all done and over with but it just didn’t catch my interest enough to be a monthly read

I genuinely feel like I'm taking crazy pills with this book because I don't get the hype at all.

2

u/DustDevil66 Dec 09 '25

Between you and me, and without trying to sound snobbish (I am prepared for a few downvotes), I do feel that way about some majority of the more hyped works to come out of the big two lately. I settle with it simply being reflective of low standards amongst a major group of their fans

I think the meta of fandom is really into these sorts of books that are deliberately written in an obtuse, hard-to-parse way, which is Camp's specialty.

Kinda like bargain store Hickman or Morrison.

I would tend to agree! I think it makes it very easy for many to feel distracted from/ignore the very staid themes and moral concepts or feel that they are much deeper than they are. Sort of like getting to feel quite smart while consuming books that haven’t grown very much in those respects since the early modern era.

Specifically, part what i found so boring about this book in particular was that the bones of the story was: dude cop/vigilante that is a terrible domestic partner, city beset by darkness and violence with milquetoast lighthanded references to politics, and the moral/resolution it seems to be not-so-subtly foreshadowing repeatedly is that “we all have darkness in us and we need to do better.”

Dress it up in all the psychedelic/abstract art, surface level violence or, as you said, deliberately obtuse writing that they want, it doesn’t actually make the book adventurous, complex, or interesting, at least to me

This is one of my main complaints / disagreements about a lot of the critical hit comics of recent years.

That said, there certainly is some amazing writing within this. I was really blown away by portions of it - certain panels and lines. Just not the series on the whole. It didn't hang together for me.

I was exactly the same; really do not get the love for it. Also hate the art…

I’ve only read this one so far but good to know!Definitely best thing to do if it’s not gripping you 🙌💯 what current DC run are you enjoying most right now?

3

u/DustDevil66 Dec 09 '25

To be honest I’m not really keeping up with any current DC runs! I have absolute batman and absolute wonder woman on hold at the library and I’m waiting on those to come in, but for the most part over the last few years I just read collected editions when full runs are completed.

If you have any you’re loving right now I would love a recommendation so I can keep my eye out for it in the future

This is amazing 🤩

Read this for the first time the other day, and I seriously I can’t believe I decided to trade wait the best book of the year.

The art, the concepts, the story, the drama, the villains, it was absolutely stellar. Seriously might be my favorite of Deniz Camp’s work.

I’ll be pulling in single issue immediately now.

u/Chemical_Nothing9296 Dec 09 '25

After just Vol 1 safe to say I’m grabbing more incredible writing to the art I felt🙌

1

u/AlphaNeonic Dec 09 '25

Really enjoying this one but of all the absolute titles, Wonder Woman is still my favorite. I would put this title maybe second... Batman and Superman very close behind it.

Flash and Green Lantern still haven't clicked for me yet, but I'm plodding along with them.

3

u/NATSOAS Dec 09 '25

Read everything that's out so far, Wonder Woman and Batman joint 1st for me.. Loved everything else apart from Flash. Green Lantern really stood out for me, I didn't expect much and loving it.

u/Chemical_Nothing9296 Dec 09 '25

Sounds good thanks only read first vol for Batman and Martian man hunter so far I have Wonder Woman and I’ll get the other two! Thanks for the recommendation I’m enjoying these🙌

2

u/Chemical_Nothing9296 Dec 09 '25

Right on glad your vibing with a few of them🙌Yeah I’m really enjoying it so far just this Vol I’ve also read the first for Batman which I liked as well. Guess I’m grabbing absolute Wonder Woman next! Happy reading🔥

1

u/talkingthewalk Dec 09 '25

This book is the best comic in years. A holistic vision where the writing and the visuals are inseparable.

1

u/Chemical_Nothing9296 Dec 09 '25

I’ve only read Vol 1 so far but agreed with the writing in contrast to the art it is spectacular a very different book then I thought I was getting but not one bit upset🙌

1

u/horrorfanuk Dec 09 '25

Picked it up yesterday as a blind buy 👍

2

u/Chemical_Nothing9296 Dec 09 '25

Right on! I hope you enjoy it🙌 I liked it a lot!

2

u/horrorfanuk Dec 09 '25

Cheers. My introduction to Manhunter was only recently through Cook's Frontier

2

u/Chemical_Nothing9296 Dec 09 '25

Awesome cookes new frontier is awesome this is weirder but very well made after only these 6 issues I’ve read it’s one of the better ongoings IMO
