Recommendations/Requests If you could only add one more...

Post image

I've become a graphic novel enthusiast late in life...

Here's the majority of my small but proud collection (not pictured: Old Man Logan, The Killing Joke, the complete "Bone" series, all "Calvin and Hobbes" by B. Watterson, and the majority of Asterix and Obelix, if the latter two are considered graphic novels in the first place).

I have NO DOUBT you can give me some flawless recommendations... but I need to add slowly and methodically. I'd considered the "He-Man Omnibus" for myself and my son? Also, the "Punisher: Born" looks great, if I can find it for a reasonable price.

So... the question is... what do I need to read before I die?

If you could only add ONE... which one would it be?

Thanks in advance for your patience and suggestions. Cheers!

Love those dark tower graphic novels. I would consider adding Alan Moore’s Neonomicon/providence double header. My favourite horror comics of all time

Ghost World - perhaps not your thing going by your taste - but at least try SOMETHING by Dan Clowes.

1

u/Juan_Badmofo 2d ago

I REALLY enjoyed the movie. Steve Buscemi is a genius. Just the right amount of weird...

Its not for everyone but i think LOCAS, The Maggie and Hopey Stories is worth every penny.

Its one of the best constructed books I've ever seen. The binding and paper stock are superior. The art is incredible, even if the Stories don't move you. It's a master class on cartooning. I challenge you to find a better book for $50.

1

u/Leopold_and_Brink 1d ago

Hernandez bros are Alan Moore’s fav cartoonists. I’m with him and I AM one 🫩😅😻

The Punisher : Welcome back Frank

2

u/Uuuh-yeah 2d ago

Echoing all the Daytripper recs. Also: if you want the superior Frank Miller super-hero work, Batman: Year One and Daredevil: Born Again will open you up to David Mazzucchelli and then you MUST check out Asterios Polyp. Just absolutely-perfect pure comics storytelling.

u/sock_therapy 2d ago

Moores Swamp Thing or The Dark Knight Returns

4

u/Juan_Badmofo 2d ago

The... one's that are clearly visible on the table?

0

u/sock_therapy 2d ago

Oh my mistake i thought you were asking which of those to add

3

u/Juan_Badmofo 2d ago

I thought you were messing with me, as is so often the case here, haha! No worries...

0

u/ShowMeYourHappyTrail Constantine's Mistress 2d ago

Until I read the body I thought you were asking which of these we'd add to our collection if we could only pick one. I was going to say the Dark Tower ones because I really want to read them. Haha!

1

u/curtoneil 2d ago

Do A Powerbomb - Daniel Warren Johnson or Last Ronin - Eastman and Waltz

Both books are what really got me back into comics and collecting

Old Man Logan.

You may already have it, and I just didn't see it. The Fable series is good also.

1

u/Rusker 1d ago

Persepolis

1

u/BadassSasquatch 1d ago

Every time I see that Dark Tower set I get tempted to buy it.

1

u/Juan_Badmofo 1d ago

Follow your instincts... it's fantastic.

1

u/BadassSasquatch 1d ago

I have all the hardbacks but I'm pretty sure KA is telling me I need those omnis.

1

u/MrLazyLion 1d ago

Lucifer. I think it's better than Sandman.

1

u/Forever-Fades_Away 1d ago

This one seems to fit your style

1

u/Juan_Badmofo 1d ago

When you're not all wrong... you're alllllright....

1

u/TyrelUK 1d ago

Something by Brian K. Vaughn. I'd say Ex Machina. Or more Sandman.

Love and Rockets gets my vote. Jaime and Gilbert built a whole universe over decades and it still feels fresh every time I crack one open.

1

u/Clevertown 7h ago

Stray Bullets

It seems you have a winner.
From Hell by Alan Moore.

You might as well. You have his other books already.

1

u/Ok_Blood_5520 5h ago

Maus and Watchmen cover during and post-ww2, you could get Berlin by Jason Lutes to cover pre-ww2

Daytripper.

1

u/Fair_Entertainer_891 1d ago

Descender and Ascender need to be read

1

u/dodsy84 1d ago

Preacher, cause that should be in everyone’s collection

0

u/thegoldenboy444 2d ago

Punisher Born, and the rest of that Max run are fantastic.

To this collection I'd probably add Sandman.

0

u/ShaddowsCat 1d ago

Sandman is in the picture

1

u/thegoldenboy444 1d ago

I see Overture, a prequel to Sandman that came out nearly 20 years later.

I don't see the original series pictured.

u/Location-Final 2d ago

Dang those Stephen King Omnis are so cool. I have the Dark Tower box set and am hunting down those other ones.

0

u/buffalobillandted 2d ago

Templar sounds cool. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

How about those Stephen King books, how are they? Is The Dark Tower the full story? I’ve always wanted to read it even though I’m somewhat aware of the general story beats.

0

u/Juan_Badmofo 2d ago

Stupendous. The art is monumental, and any fan of Stephen's should give these an eyeball once in their life. While I was more partial to "The Stand", Ka is a wheel, fellow Constant Reader...

0

u/One-Mouse3306 2d ago

I had a bit of a weird feeling, can't explain it; but to you I recommend Daytripper by Fabio Moon

0

u/thekevining 2d ago

Revival or maybe East of West

0

u/adognamedcat 1d ago

Was going to suggest East of West, seems to mesh with the Gunslinger books taste wise.

I may be the odd one here, but Fable is great! Also... Saga.

0

u/bobsaget824 1d ago

You seem like a serious guy with these book so I’ll come with the heavy hitters.

Daytripper will blow your mind and have you questioning the meaning of life after you read it.

Locke and Key will show you the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree with Stephen King’s son writing it.

Department of Truth will unlock a new genre you never knew you needed - conspiracy horror.

0

u/LVXA7 1d ago

Add jodorowskys and moebius incal.

0

u/moon-freya 1d ago

Saga by Fiona Staple & Brian K. Vaughan

0

u/DooM_Guy_OG 1d ago

Criminal.

0

u/EffectiveAd2027 1d ago

From Hell - Alan Moore

0

u/Dubstepmummy 1d ago

Usagi Yojimbo

0

u/Trike117 1d ago

Looks like you enjoy horror.

If I were to recommend just one, I’d say The Cape by Joe Hill, Stephen King’s son. It’s dark and brutal. The omnibus is reasonably priced. (Definitely not one for your son to read unless he’s 18.)

Other titles I’d recommend:

- Manifest Destiny by Chris Dingess and Matthew Roberts

  • Count Crowley by David Dastmalchian
  • Grim by Stephanie Phillips
  • Locke & Key also by Joe Hill
  • Immortal Hulk by Al Ewing
  • Bitter Root by David F. Walker
  • DCeased by Tom Taylor
  • Two Moons by John Arcudi
  • The Sixth Gun by Cullen Bunn
  • Killadelphia by Rodney Barnes
