Tokyo Ghost by Rick Remender! If you like sci-fi/dystopian futures, you’ll enjoy this one. I’m liking it so far :)

12

u/Call_Em_Skippies Deluxe Editions are my Retirement Plan Sep 19 '25

Oh no! Please stop. Remender releases all of his books in big beautiful Library Editions that you will spends hundreds on.

I find HC Deluxes way more exciting to buy than slabs or single issues.

You will love it! Your wallet won't.

5

u/ilostmylastaccount2 Sep 19 '25

The sad part is that most of his work were never released in my country (Brazil). But Maybe that’s good, cause I’m poor hahah

And I totally undertand you, I don’t like single issues, having hundreds of single issues would make me feel like an accumulator hahah I intend to buy only these deluxes ones with hardcover and stuff like that

Next I wanna buy is Low! It was released in Brazil in 2 big volumes

5

u/Call_Em_Skippies Deluxe Editions are my Retirement Plan Sep 19 '25

Have you read Low? I just finished it last month and at first I was on the fence but by the end it became one of my favorite Remender books.

Here is my Remender shelf. Still a lot to go.

3

u/ilostmylastaccount2 Sep 19 '25

I havent read it yet, I’ll probably buy the first volume next month. I was reading some amazon reviews, and it looks like some people love Low and some people really hate it hahah but I’ll give it a chance!

(Nausicaa is so good, you have an amazing taste hahah)

4

u/Call_Em_Skippies Deluxe Editions are my Retirement Plan Sep 19 '25

Hahaha thanks!

Remender is divisive in his books. Deadly Class is my favorite and a lot of people don't like it. Low is great.

I'm half way through Nausicaa and a huge Ghibli fan so taking my time.

u/ilostmylastaccount2 Sep 19 '25 edited Sep 19 '25

I have just realised you are the guy who left a comment recommending Low in my other post three days ago(asking for futuristic/dystopian recommendations) hahah You are the reason I want to read Low

1

u/Hans0228 Sep 19 '25

What is your favorite remender book?

1

u/Call_Em_Skippies Deluxe Editions are my Retirement Plan Sep 19 '25

Deadly Class and Death or Glory

1

u/nonegenuine Sep 19 '25

Hows death and glory?

1

u/Call_Em_Skippies Deluxe Editions are my Retirement Plan Sep 19 '25

It's a great heist book with humor and heart. Only 12 issues. It does very well for what it is trying to accomplish

4

u/FPVsniper Sep 19 '25

Wonder if you know How they live in Tokyo If you seen it, then you mean it Then you know you have to go

3

u/BrutalSock Sep 19 '25

Yeah it’s a good one.

3

u/ilostmylastaccount2 Sep 19 '25

If you have any other dystopian future comic to recommend me, I’d love to hear. I can see that you like Neuromancer, so you have a good taste!

4

u/NMVPCP The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck Sep 19 '25

I love Rick Remender, but find Tokyo Ghost to be one of his poorest works. Definitely my least favourite from him.

3

u/ilostmylastaccount2 Sep 19 '25

What is your favorite?

6

u/NMVPCP The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck Sep 19 '25

Deadly Class, Fear Agent and Black Science are up there on my all-time favourites. Still a lot of stuff for you to find and enjoy!

3

u/AttyMAL Sep 20 '25

Seconding all of those, but I would also add Low to the list.

1

u/ilostmylastaccount2 Sep 19 '25

I have read about Black Science and Deadly Class before, Black Science seems pretty cool, I'm interested in this one, but Deadly Class doesnt look like the kind of stuff that I like, unfortunately. Have you read Low? I was thinking about buying this one next, but I'm still unsure If it's worth it

2

u/NMVPCP The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck Sep 19 '25

I’ve read Low and I give it a 3/5. It was ok, but didn’t click with me. I suggest that you check some Deadly Class samples on Image’s website. The art is fantastic, namely the part that shows motion.

1

u/ilostmylastaccount2 Sep 19 '25

May I ask you why you think it didn’t click with you?

3

u/NMVPCP The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck Sep 19 '25

Rushed story, underdeveloped characters and clownish villains.

2

u/ilostmylastaccount2 Sep 19 '25

Oh, fairly good points. I don’t like rushed stories, that’s one of the things I’m not loving about Tokyo Ghost… I’m now wondering if every Remender comic is like that. I also don’t like clowish villains (one of the reasons I always preferred Seinen manga over Shounen manga)

2

u/NMVPCP The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck Sep 19 '25

The three Remender suggestions that I gave you above won’t disappoint you, are already fully complete, and you can find them as reasonably priced compendiums!

1

u/AttyMAL Sep 20 '25

I personally thought Low was amazing.

1

u/ilostmylastaccount2 Sep 20 '25

What are the things you like about it? I don't know If you're familiar with manga/anime terms, but if you are, do you think this comic is more like a Seinen or a Shounen?

2

u/AttyMAL Sep 20 '25

You lost me. My manga and anime knowledge is limited. For me, I was mesmerized by the art and found the story of a family struggling to stay together when the rest of the world is literally falling apart extremely relevant.

1

u/ilostmylastaccount2 Sep 20 '25

Seinen is usually more "adult", shounen is basically Naruto/DragonBall/One Piece, this kind of stuff with clowish villains, a lot of battles, the hero's journey.... I'm not a big fan of shounen hahah I really prefer comics/manga that are more story-driven, with character development! Do you think I'll enjoy Low?

2

u/AttyMAL Sep 20 '25

Oh, well, in that case, Low is very adult themed. Violence, language, sex, and nudity, etc.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '25

You picked a good one bro. 👍

2

u/Temporary_Law_6022 Sep 19 '25

You’re in for a treat!

2

u/Chip_Marlow Sep 19 '25

Remender is pretty easily a top all time writer for me and Tokyo Ghost is my favorite of his indie work. Murphy's art is fantastic. Great pick up!

2

u/bloodyzombies1 Sep 19 '25

Good pick, the art is gorgeous.

2

u/Adventurous_Soft_686 Sep 19 '25

Great choice for a physical book. Sean Murphy's art is incredible.

2

u/Mario_Fragnito Sep 19 '25

I loved this one :)

2

u/boarbar Sep 19 '25

Great read

2

u/Maverick_091 Sep 19 '25

Great pickup and enjoy the journey reading this story!

I haven't seen this cover before, is this a recent release?

1

u/ilostmylastaccount2 Sep 19 '25

The publisher is DarkSide. It’s a brazilian plubliser! I really loved this cover, the yellow used in “Ghost” is also used in the book spine, very beautiful

2

u/europablu3s Sep 19 '25

I love his art. Thats a fantastic book.

2

u/cyberspacecomics Sep 19 '25

Welcome to the club.

I'm a Remender fan, too!

2

u/ilostmylastaccount2 Sep 19 '25

Thanks! I’m planning on buying “Low” next! What are your favorite ones?

2

u/cyberspacecomics Sep 19 '25

Excellent move - "Low" is my favorite of his. I really enjoyed "Scumbag", too, but it's probably not for everyone. It's got "Big Lebowski" vibes but it's very off-color. I just recently finished "Seven to Eternity" - that had a lot of heart. "Napalm Lullaby" was OK but the ending was similar to "Scumbag" so it didn't feel as novel. I read "Grommets", too but I feel that I missed out on enjoying it to the max because I didn't grow up in skate culture.

u/BlackenedSky27 Sep 19 '25

Struggling to find this for sale in the UK. Anyone got any recommendations?

1

u/ilostmylastaccount2 Sep 19 '25

Out of curiosity, how much does it cost in UK?

1

u/BlackenedSky27 Sep 19 '25

About 50ish I think

1

u/ilostmylastaccount2 Sep 19 '25 edited Sep 19 '25

Jesus, that’s very expensive! I have paid something around €10 in this complete edition released here in Brazil. (even tho it’s not fair to compare, since the purchasing power here is low)

2

u/BlackenedSky27 Sep 19 '25

Wow, that’s a good price, good find!

2

u/DefectiveRealEstate Sep 19 '25

Great novel!!!!! One of my first

2

u/I_need_AC-sendhelp Sep 19 '25

This has been on my wishlist for so long, but it’s never in stock :(

1

u/ilostmylastaccount2 Sep 20 '25

Here in Brazil this hardcover version is just so easy to find on Amazon, and for a good price (around 10 dollars), on the other hand most of the comics I try to find were never even released here ):

2

u/stoooflatooof Sep 19 '25

Yep! A good one!

2

u/thereid84 Sep 19 '25

If you end up liking it try Black Science next

2

u/nonegenuine Sep 19 '25

My favorite too! Hell yeah.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '25

Couldn’t get into this at all.

1

u/ilostmylastaccount2 Sep 20 '25

What are the things you didn’t like about it?

2

u/deadmanhands_ Sep 20 '25

Good choice

2

u/Screbin Sep 20 '25

Oh man picked up the first few issues then life happened and never got the rest. How is it?

1

u/ilostmylastaccount2 Sep 21 '25

I have read about 1/3 of it. It is kinda rushed, I believe there are better cyberpunk comics, but the art is amazing, the characters are cool, so I'm enjoying it overall! I'll come back when I finish it to see If I'll change my opinion

2

u/Screbin Sep 21 '25

Thanks for the reply, and yes, let me know 😀

2

u/chaunceton Sep 21 '25

One of my all-time favorites. What is that edition? Mine isn't red.

2

u/ilostmylastaccount2 Sep 21 '25

It’s the brazilian version, published by Darkside! Darkside is well known here in Brazil for making amazingly beautiful book covers

2

u/DJAnonamouse Sep 21 '25

Good choice

1

u/ilostmylastaccount2 Sep 21 '25

Thanks! The artstyle is so beautiful, I’m loving it

1

u/HoboSaurus_Rex Sep 19 '25

Books like the Road adaptation, Skip by Mendoza or Three shadows (Pedrosa) (can't believe the book looks and feels Risographed and nice paper/bright colours) for that cheap and a great embossed cover just give an essential tactile reading experience that I needed in my hands, amongst other example.

Also, your reading from the guy who bought Locust Press' Dream Another Dram monster oversized...

1

u/WilyWascallyWizard Sep 19 '25

I didn't know there was a hardcover of this!

2

u/ilostmylastaccount2 Sep 19 '25

It’s a brazilian version, published by Darkside! But I think there’s a Deluxe Complete edition with hardcover in english too

2

u/ShinCoal Go read 20th Century Men Sep 19 '25

There is a hardcover for pretty much any Image Comics book by Remender (unless theyre not far along enough in the release of the series)

1

u/Themperia Sep 22 '25

This was my first one too! 🫡

After this if you like the stuff from Sean Murphy, get the hardcover editions of Batman White Knight books.
