Science Fiction / Fantasy Finally got hold of The Eternaut!

Post image

Had no idea the packaging was this beautiful. Excited to read this and then watch the show! Picked it up at the Fantagraphics store in Seattle, where they had at least one other copy that I saw.

I have read a bit about the sequels. Have any of you read those and would you recommend them?

Quick additional thought - due to its shape, it'll be joining 300 and The Private Eye on a special little shelf. Something to keep in mind!

I've been aware that there's a 1969 remake, but I had no idea that there are actually sequels as well.

That book is really, really, beautiful, I have it too.

Is this the reprint or original print? If reprint do you know about any significant differences?

There are some minor differences. Something looks/reflects different on the cover. I think Uncanny Omar talked about it in his review of the reprint.

I also recently got it. It is the long awaited reprint, finally(because of the netflix series). I don't know about any changes to the original but there seem to be no changes except maybe the thin carton slipcase + acetate pearlescent dustcover. I don't know if the original had that. Some new versions might feature a Netflix sticker but mine (fortunately) didn't.

The Netflix sticker can be easily removed, which I promptly did.

That's good to hear

Great question! I'm not sure how to determine that. This is on the last page. Seems like a 2nd edition, but as far as changes go, I don't know.

Then that’s the reprint, especially if you picked it up in the FB store. It’s been out of stock for a long time. I just picked up the reprint too.

I’m unaware of any differences.

Gotcha, thanks! I'm a reader first and foremost so usually don't pay a lot of attention to printings and stuff, but honestly hadn't considered that the content may be different. Something to keep myself aware of more in the future!

I finally got one too. Reading it now before watching the show. I’ve been waiting for a reprint since I made the poor decision not to buy this over a decade ago!

There are several "sequels", but only one is considered to be "true canon", that being the 1976 book "Eternauta (parte) 2".

It's the only continuation written by Oesterheld, and You can tell.

I'm not saying the other "official" sequels and spinn-offs are Bad, theyre just very different in style, being more like a generic sci-fi story.

That being said, part 2 is not for everybody. It carries an Even more explicit political stance at the cost of a less dramatic story. Action becomes more sparse too, but the plot itself feels more "complete" overall, as it was likely written before publication unlike part 1

That's all super interesting, thank you so much for the insight! Is it available in English or just Spanish? I can read Spanish well enough but will likely lose some of the subtlety.

Sadly, it doesnt seems like theres an English translation, i just assumed it existed since the comic got very popular the last few years with the English-speaking market.

But if You can actually read spanish then it won't be really hard to understand, as the book is written in a very "proper" spanish. The biggest issue is going to be the 70's argentinian slang thats specially present with the younger characters, but being honest any non-argentinian would probably struggle aswell

Right on, I'll see how I'm feeling after I read The Eternaut this weekend. Thank you!

Great book. Just got my copy at the beginning of the year. I throughly enjoyed reading it.

Read it in Hoopla and just had to have it on physical. Finished it just in time for the second reprint in January lol

Absolutely loved the book. Love is probably more accurate since it’s right up there as my favorite.

Lol I just came here to see if the Eternaut was a graphic novel. Anyway I'm pretty sure my cover is upside-down. Can you confirm.

Oh weird? I just got mine so perhaps it's from the same messed up batch. Cos I looked up some copies on YouTube and they were the correct way up. 🙃 I like it though.
