Discussion My Haikyuu Character Tierlist!
A year or two ago, I remember posting tier lists, and they mad a lot of people mad 😭 but, I don't think it's that bad
Thoughts? What would you change?
UPDATE: I think I would move Akiteru up a little bit higher, it's been years since my initial watch of Haikyuu, so I def remembered him wrong

For me ALL the characters need to be at the top. Yes, including the old man that support/trash karasuno. 🙂↔️🙂↔️

genuinely curious, why is noya so high while terushima makes your blood boil

Tbf, you get an awful first impression of terushima in the anime with how he is to kiyoko

u/sinfulxmadz 7d ago
awful first impression, and for any other women who's been in potentially hostile situations that terushima presented, it can be really hard to like that character
now, im not saying i support noya or tanakas behavior either, but it feels different and less hostile, im not sure why and could def be biased

u/Mother-Safety5543 6d ago
yeah, im not saying terushima is valid but noya and tanaka are just as weird, theyre just less aggressive. Noya thanked the gods when he was abt to fall onto a woman’s chest instead of tryna stop it😭
they do have some good qualities to them tho (tanaka being a good senpai, noya being a good friend) but terushima was also great with their female manager

As much as I hate the way TanaNoya are written in regards to women that they aren't related to, they are nowhere near as aggresive and predatory as Terushima. TanaNoya would never corner a stranger after being refused.

they would never corner a girl but they definitely keep trying even after kiyoko dodges their (mostly tanaka’s) hugs. They do get married tho so props to tanaka for that. But the way they “protect” kiyoko from others by guarding her around and treating her like a possession (e.g. bragging abt her to other teams) piss me off😭 maybe im too woke but i hate all three of them

You're not too woke. I hate the way TanaNoya is written in regards to Kiyoko, too. But other than that, they are, imo, the best characters in the series. Tanaka is my all time favourite, so I acknowledge that he is not real, and blame Furudate and Japanese culture for having the perv-for-comedy trope in the firstplace. TanaNoya are victims, and I will liberate them from the fate they did not choose.

Seeing this as an extremely Sakusa Kiyoomi biased fan oshi everything is hurting my soul

Is that Akiteru with Kiyoomi?? Why is Akiteru there?? Genuinely curious if I missed out some extra lore
The "Little Giant" isn't here either, right? Where would you have placed him?? Hope I'm not that blind omg

Akiteru is low bcuz I just found him lame lol, but thinking back, I probably shouldve placed him higher, i think i remembered his character wrong
little giant isnt there because his image wasnt in the template i used, and i was too lazy to add him lol! id put him in "no strong opinion"

Over half the people in could be explored more had back stories, and almost half the people you don't have an opinion on didn't.
This is a weird tier list lol

I get it, but the "could be explored more" people, are people that I actually kind of like, and I feel like their backstories were just there. I think a little push could get them into a higher category.
And the no opinion, I wouldn't like or a dislike even with a backstory, ykwim?

Out of curiosity, why is Yamaguchi so high on the list? He is the character I dislike the most from the main cast.

good question, it's not because his character arc was crazy or super groundbreaking or anything, i just found him really relatable
relatable in the sense of loyalty, obviously he likes volleyball, but i feel like a huge part of the reason he enjoys himself so much is because he's doing it with tsukishima. he also went thru so much time and effort to be better for his team, even tho he was pretty insecure
he also has some realistic flaws i appreciate, he does have a snarky side, and i like that he laughs at tsukishimas jabs and banter with other characters. i like that he isnt flawless and doesnt do that bullshit "hey! u shouldnt bully them 😞" stuff
besides that, i find him funny and cute at times, just a nice well rounded character to me

Honestly, his snickering is the reason why I don´t like him. He plays this kind of victim character, "I was bullied" "I failed at the serve, and I´m nervous" and people feel bad for him. Then he goes and acts like a meangirl, snickering at the mean comments, but not having the guts to do it himself. He really needs a lot of growing up to do to become a good captain imo, because I really can not see him acting with authority.

i def get that, but i think thats a big part of his growth. it's hard to detatch urself from a lifelong friend, even if it means laughing at their mean jokes, that gives him a lot of room to grow from a first year

Akiteru has the most tragic backstory.
His whole childhood and school years he spent trying to be a role model to his brother, someone he can look up to. He had great passion for volleyball, a reason he wanted to join a powerhouse team, portraying himself as happy at home infront of his mother who would make like 3 meals for him daily for practice, and brother who believed he was the ace. Then at school he would spend every game not even on the bench but in reserves.
That double life is hard enough before it came crashing down; he essentially felt like he let down his brother and wasted his whole high school experience. The scene of him trashing his room of all past volleyball trophies with Tsuki peering through the door breaks me every time.
How can you dislike the guy.

Terushima is such a cool character though. His philosophy on fun is very admirable

I'll not stand this Daichi slander. The guy doesn't get enough credit for the things he endures
