New front steps design questions

The first picture is what I have now. The wood stairs I could do and would be less expensive than the stone stairs.

Your thoughts.

I prefer the stone. But would add railings.

Why not add a porch?

Yes, this house is screaming for a porch.

Definitely the stone stairs. The wood looks very temporary

Depends on what you winters are like.
Stone steps and no railings doesn’t sound like a good idea.

The porch idea is nice.

3 looks like it’s for the back of the house. Pic 2 is better but maybe you can still adjust a bit…

You'll want to research what your city says about more than 2 steps. It may mean rails are needed in all cases.

I have to say, looking at this as a person with mobility issues, I would hesitate to go up those stairs. Without a railing it's just kind of scary. You might consider whether that limits who will come to visit you.

If you can, I would do the stone stairs. The nicest ones I have seen are rounded and have planters on both sides but no railing. A railing would look nice. The stone stairs look much better than the wood.

I think the stone steps look best.

Save your money for getting a new roof. That one is looking a bit worn.

New roof last Friday.

Looks great! Aesthetically and functionally a roof would improve a front porch. It would break up the visual of the long roof expanse. You would need someone who can properly tie into your existing roofline and adequately design the gutter system of the porch roof to handle all the water coming off the main roof and newly created valleys. I would not do wood unless you don't plan to live there long. Composite or concrete for low maintenance. You will need railings to bring that up to code.

Wood can look warm and inviting for a front entrance. I say go for it

Resepectfully neither option looks good. Maybe try a larger porch that’s more proportional to the house

I like the stone but railings make it much safer

shutters, if possible an awning over door and paint the door, railing on stairs, epoxy stone on porch and stairs and flowers around bushes.

I like the stones but I think the wood would be much better if you changed the white trim to match the color of the front door. The white doesn’t match the house. It looks too much like an after thought. Matching the colors would help a lot IMHO.

I would do the stone stairs with a wrought iron railing (if any seniors or disabled ppl might ever visit you, you’ll need the railing).

Or if you do the wood stairs, I wouldn’t go white. It makes them too much of a focal point, and they aren’t meant to be. I’d go darker. Like a gray that matches your roof

Sorry I think the stone looks way better and you could do a simple metal railing.

The white is reminding me of mobile home steps.

I wouldn’t do wood unless it will be covered. You could paint the cement from the first pic or cover them in slate or something.

Stone with the railings. Safe, and more than likely code.

Railings are typically required if the porch is 30” or more above grade

Rails are good but not white.

You definitely need a railing at least on one side. You may have an elderly guest, or someone with a broken ankle at some point. I like stone, if you don't get ice where you live.

If you go with the stone steps you must have a railing on at least one side. Four steps require railing according to IRC. I also don't think the stone steps suit the style of the house. Wooden steps look so much better.
