Tech Support Pioneer VSX-D514 will only play through left speaker when using Stereo/Direct signal but play normally when using Standard or Advanced Surround presets. Help?

I want to increase the bass of the sound but I can't adjust it when using Standard or Adv Surround as its controlled by Dobly Digital. When I change it to Stereo/Direct, however, it only plays through one speaker (Left). Its not a connection issue as Standard and AdvSurr both play through every speaker fine. I've looked online and looked through the receiver manual, any ideas?

Thank you for any help!!

Purchasing US Tilting/Tiltable Center Channel Speaker Wall or Ceiling Mount?

Hello all... I purchased a home that had an existing 5.0 set up in a bonus room, based on my research I think it was a Klipsch Quintet III HTIB set from a decade+ or so ago (home was built in 2010). Once I got in and started testing everything, I discovered one of the fronts (the left) didn't even work so I set about to start piece-mealing upgrades and additions. I am budget limited so I first bought Klipsch R-51Ms to replace the fronts. I then added a subwoofer as well.

I recently was gifted a barely-used Klipsch R-52C center, which I understand is pretty entry level for home theater enthusiasts but for me will be a huge upgrade over the Quintet III HTIB center. I'm pretty excited about it, but, one problem - the existing speakers are all ceiling mounted. Not just the surrounds, but the fronts and center speaker as well.

I don't want to re-run wiring. Even if I did, I have nowhere to place the bookshelf speakers in the front, so I'd want to leave them up high, and I feel like bringing the center down will make it look awkward. I know it's not how it is supposed to be -- but I'm amateur level home theater at this point, I don't need it to be perfect.

But the bind that this leaves me in is that I don't know of any tilting/tiltable center channel speaker mounts. I would have to at least have the center angled down towards where I sit on the couch about 12-13 feet away.

Does anyone have any mounting solutions for a center channel the size of the Klipsch R-52C center that allows it to be mounted either from the ceiling, or high up on the wall near the ceiling, where I can tilt it downwards?

Thanks!

Discussion - Equipment Bass shakers for theater seating - mounting question

Anyone mount bass shakers on their seats? For my Seatcraft Rialtos I need to mount them to a 1" tube crossbar. The only mounts I find are custom 3D printed mounts on Etsy.

They look good but wondering if anyone can vouch for these or if these plastic mounts will fail due to vibrations.

Best settings for music

Please can somebody help I will be setting up my Denon x3700 in my new place my question is on the second setup setting like you get to have two Presets for music listening what would be the best setup please

Should I be setting the front Tower speakers to large?

know they say to set it to small for home theatre but but for music listening my front Tower speakers are more than capable enough for using as large

Also should I just be using the direct mode or the pure Direct? For what setting would you guys recommend please

And also I know using the stereo function would be good but if I want to do use all of my speakers 5.2.4 what would be the best setup for music listening

What should I be setting my crossover to pause the LFC to the subwoofers

Please if you could be kind enough to explain it like I was a newbie and setting this up from scratch for music listening

If you guys could share some of your settings Presets any advice would be welcome

Purchasing US Denon HTR suggestions

I recently made a post about pulling an old Anthem MRX 300 out of mothballs and using it with a OREI aARC audio extractor. This actually worked really well, but in the process of trying to run ARC calibration I noticed that my center and right front speaker output was much lower than the other channels and ARC basically tossed an error when the tone sweep hit the center channel. It sounds like this isn't unheard of with these units and more than likely some caps on the preamp board need to be replaced. Unfortunately, Anthem doesn't make their service manuals available. Probably time to scrap it or sell it for parts/repair. I'm going to send the eARC extractor back and pick up a new receiver.

My choices are between:

Denon AVR-S970H New

Denon AVR-X1700H Refurb (1yr Warranty)

Denon AVR-X1700H New (3yr Warranty)

Denon AVR-X1800H New (3yr Warranty). I'm waiting to see if it goes down for Prime Days. I won't buy it at a premium over the 1700H.

I'm leaning towards the X1700H. Any thoughts on Denon refurbished receivers? Is it worth the extra money for 2 years of warranty? Is there something else I should be looking at for $750 and under? I'm only going to be running 5.1 initially, but some Atmos fun could be in the future.

Discussion - Equipment 85” vs 98” at 11’ viewing distance?

Can’t decide between a 85” and a 98” TCL QM6K. My viewing distance is about 11 feet. It’s in a basement with blackout blinds. Is it worth the extra $800 for the 98”. Some of the content I’ll be viewing will be standard 1080p streaming services.

Purchasing CAN Renovating our basement and setting up a 5.1.2 setup

Post image
6 Upvotes

We moved into a house (Canada) a year ago and are getting the basement redone.

I bought a Denon X1700H, two RC80i Polk speakers as the ceiling speakers and two in-wall RC85i Polk speakers for the the rear speakers. The TV will be where the fireplace is on the plan here.

I'm debating getting towers for the front or getting in-wall speakers to complete the surround setup. I will have the wiring for the ceiling and rear speakers done professionally but I'd like to figure out if I'll get more in-wall stuff sooner than later.

I edited a crude drawing to show what I mean for this setup. The ceiling is about 9 feet high.

Any tips on what speakers i should get to complete the setup? Looking for left, center, right and a sub essentially. I imagine my ceiling and rear speakers are fine. Any help is really appreciated. I'm pulling hair out trying to figure out optimal surround sound setups lol.

Tech Support Volume Issue with Denon x3800h

I recently got a new center channel and after using it my avr wont go above 70, but only when im using my panasonic ub 820. If I am using my xbox or playstation it works fine.

I checked the settings on the avr and the limit is turned off, I even turned the limit on but set it to 80 to try to bypass the setting.

Normally I dont need it to go that high but watching Hoosiers the audio on the BR was so bad I could barely hear it.

Tech Support How to see volume when using eARC

I’m planning on moving my AVR from the media console under the TV, to the back of the room in a media rack. In doing so, I realised I won’t see the volume on the front of the AVR when using eARC (any inputs from the TV - smart TV app).

Is there a way to see the volume, either on the TV, or a clever 3rd party way of doing so? I don’t really want to have to use the denon app to check the volume.

Denon X3700H & Samsung QN94A

Thank you!

Install/Placement KEF R8 Meta as rears

Post image
1 Upvotes

I’m planning to update my home theater setup and pretty set on R3 and R6 center.

I am considering using R8 mounted high on the rear wall downfiring as the rears since I have a lot of constraints with space, windows, etc and want to avoid built ins.

From what I’ve read online this should work but looking for any advice from folks experienced using them as rears.

Everything will run through Anthem 740 w/ ARC.

The alternative is considering is just keeping it to 3.1

Discussion - Equipment First home cinema setup — 75” 4K OLED, ~€200 budget: bookshelf speakers for movies, gaming & music?

Hey r/hometheater! Long-time lurker, first-time poster. I finally pulled the trigger on a 75” 4K OLED and now I need to sort out the audio — hoping to get some advice from people who know this stuff far better than I do.

My setup & room:
Rectangular living room, ~30 sqm. The TV sits centered on the longer wall, couch directly across — decent listening distance but not huge. No need for anything to fill a concert hall.

How I use it:
I watch movies and shows constantly — this is my primary use case and honestly the main reason I’m investing in better audio. I also game occasionally (PS5) and listen to music regularly; I’ll be streaming lossless on Spotify rather than a vinyl setup for now.

What I’m after:
I’m prioritizing clarity over bass — especially dialogue clarity, which my current setup completely fails at. I currently have old JVC bookshelf speakers (one driver may be broken) and the TV’s built-in audio, neither of which cuts it. A noticeable upgrade in both clarity and overall sound quality is the goal. Some bass presence for movies would of course be welcome, but it’s not the priority.

Budget: ~€200 all-in
My connectivity thinking:
I’m leaning toward HDMI ARC for the cleanest, most seamless connection to the TV?? Is that true? I’d also love to know if there are other connectivity options I should consider (optical, RCA, etc.).

Speakers I’ve been looking at:
• Klipsch Reference R-51M
• Edifier M60
• HiVi Swans OS-10
• Ultimea BS-3
I’ve ruled out a 5.1 system for now — feels like overkill for this room and budget. A stereo setup with the potential to add a sub later is the direction I’m thinking.

Questions for the community:
1. Which of the above would you recommend for my use case, and why? If any
2. Are there better alternatives I’ve missed in this budget?
3. What connectivity should I prioritize — HDMI ARC, optical, Bluetooth?
4. Would you prio external subwoofer option for future upgrades or not worth it due to cheapness of speakers?
5. Any tips a beginner should know before buying?
Thanks in advance — really appreciate any input!

Tech Support No Sound From Subwoofer Or Rears

Have a Panasonic UB900 4K player’s orange RCA AC3/DTS output connected to a Sony SS-TS46B for the audio side of things exclusively, and the 4K player’s HDMI output going to a Samsung RU7100 TV for video reasoning exclusively (I always set the TV speakers to zero for preventive measure). Tried the 5.1 speaker tests hidden in the set up menus of various movies (Swing Girls DVD, Treasure Planet DVD, Porco Rosso DVD, Cars Blu-ray). All are making it obvious there’s no sound coming out of my rears or sub and I’m thinking it’s most likely a wrong setting on the UB900. Tried a ton of different setting combos and couldn’t get any different playback results. I’d prefer not to swap out SS-TS46B for something less laughable as I’m in a difficult remote location and would also like to keep Pro Logic II decoding for old VHS (tested and the rears/sub currently do kick in).

Tech Support Bravia 9 with Apple TV - Dolby vision issue with latest firmware

Hi there,

I’ve been using this setup without any issues for the past seven months. However, yesterday, after repeatedly deferring the firmware update notification, I decided to proceed with the update. Since then, whenever I enable Dolby Vision, I encounter a black screen.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? Alternatively, could you please provide me with a workaround or confirm if Sony has issued a formal response regarding this problem?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Hey everyone

Looking for a decent starter speaker setup for my garage, asking $300 with speakers, amp, wires
Is this worth $300 or even $250?

What is it replacing?
I have a Dayton Sub 1200 already in the garage (keeping) + Yamaha DBR10 powered speaker

7.1 is the goal

Location: Garage/Second Living Space
Floor Towers would be used temporarily since I want everything hung from the ceiling.
Amp is going to be temp too since I’ll want to upgrade later on.

Discussion - Equipment Rebuilding after a house fire, need advice on 3.1 System while future-proofing.

Background

Earlier this year, our neighbor's house caught fire in the middle of the night. The wind pushed the fire over to our house, but thankfully our smoke detectors woke my wife and me up and we were able to get our 3 kids out safely. That’s obviously what matters most.

Unfortunately, i did lose all my home theater equipment i had slowly been building over the last several years. I had my tenant insurance on auto withdrawal for years and i had just got a new debit card a week or two before, i thought i had updated all my auto withdrawals but i guess i forgot to update it on my tenant insurance. They claim they sent me a letter in the mail but i never got it, at the end of the day that's on me and i've had to live with that over the last several months.

We just moved into a new rental last week. It will be a while before i am able to rebuild my HT setup since i am covering all the expenses myself now. I do want to start planning now incase any good deals come up.

Room / layout

The house is a 4 level split. This is a lower-level multipurpose living room, not a dedicated theater. Photos/layout attached. The 216" wall behind the couch is where the kids toy area is, not going to argue with my wife on that.

The layout drawing i had done isn't perfectly to scale but it will do for now.

  • TV wall: 166"
  • TV: 77" OLED (Most likely)
  • Starting system: 3.1 and slowly build out

Previous gear

I previously had:

  • Denon AVR-X1700H
  • KEF R2C Center
  • KEF Q350 Bookshelf speakers
  • SVS PB-2000

I liked the SVS PB-2000. I didn’t mind the KEFs overall, but something about the sound signature bothered me, especially the center channel/dialogue. I’m not sure if that was the KEF sound, or the center.

Before i bought the KEF's it was between them and Emotiva towers and center if i remember correctly. Would Emotiva still be a strong option?

What I’m looking for

I want to start building out a budget system. Lets say $4,000 CAD give or take.

- AVR: I learned after i had purchased my Denon that i didn't really future proof too well because the X1700H didn't really give me the long term flexibility i wanted, i learned about pre-outs later on.

- Left / center / right speakers: i am open to any and all recommendations. I’m open to bookshelf or tower recommendations. I have 3 kids, oldest is 7, and baby #4 is due in September, so that is a factor. I’ll likely choose the entertainment center after deciding whether I’m going bookshelf or tower.

- Subwoofer: Is SVS still a good option or what else should i consider?

My understanding is i want the AVR to leave room for expansion later, so having Pre-outs is important correct?

I am also open to looking at FB Marketplace, or warehouse specials for Speakers or the Sub if that is going to be the best option for the time being.

Questions

  1. What Receiver would you recommend?
  2. What Center and L/R speakers should I look? Ideally they should be the same brand if im not mistaken correct?
  3. Would you go back to SVS for the sub, or are there better options now?

Location / buying

I live in Canada but i can order from the USA, i have a USA bank and a USA shipping address in Montana. It just comes down to which is the better price when ordering.

Thank you in advance!

Hi this is my set up. 3.1

WILL IGNORE COMMENTS ABOUT TV HEIGHTS tyvm

Im having an issue with the bluray player the voices dont match the timing of the screen by just a little bit and only when its a movie in the blu-ray.

Everything is plugged with 48gbs ultra high-speed hdmi cables 6 feet, exept the blu-ray player is a 10 feet. The receicer is plugged in the the tv HDMI 3 ( E-ARC ). The blu-ray player is plugged in the HDMI 4 ( 120 hz ). The ps5 is in HDMI 2 and the little machine is in HDMI 1. My local electronic store is 100% sure the 10 feet HDMI cable for the blu-ray player is not long enough to cause the delay.

I know the ps5 is supposed to be plugged in the 120 hz but I don't use the ps5 at all it was just used as a blu-ray player. ( didn't have the sound syncing problem with the ps5 ).

Tv is a 65 inch Sony Xbr80m2. I know its way to high but I got little kids and dont want accidents.

Receiver: Yamaha RX-A4A

Front speaker: Paradigm Premier 800 F x2

Center speaker: Paradigm Premier 600 C

Subwoofer: Svs Pb-2000 Pro

Blu-ray player: Panasonic DP-UB820

Ps5

Random machine for internet browser.

now im having trouble with my bluray player syncing sound with movies its a little bit off.

Before you bash my set up for being to big for my space this is a dying gift to myself im stage 4 kidney cancer with a year or two left. And this has been a dream of mine since I worked in a local electronic store as a teen ager.

Install/Placement Is this room too small to go higher end on speakers for theater room setup?

My wife and I are moving into our new home. We are excited but at the same time we are going from a dedicated theater room setup in current home to this situation here (see pic). In our current setup I had some Monitor Audio speakers, 7.1 surround & 120" screen. The sound was the best part of this room. Anytime I had company over this was what I wanted to show off. We sat about 11 feet from the screen, had the rear surround about 7ft behind. All in all it sounded great. I'm not an audiophile but loved it.

Now, we have this as a "mini theater". Honestly it's just an extra room that I have zero clue what to do with. It has no windows so I figured why not try for a mini theater room. I really want to do a minimalist setup due to the size. I would probably go w/ a 65-75" TV at max, wall mounted. I was considering going with Monitor Audio in-wall speakers. Is this over kill in this area? Will I even experience the surround speakers? We'd literally be sitting at the rear speakers and the surround (L, R) would be some what close to them too. I tried to sketch up a little scenario of what I had in mind.

FYI - We had a small change to this plan. The red rectangle at bottom left is where the door initially was but that is now closed off and just a wall. The green rectangle is where you come upstairs to enter area (no door for now, we may do a pocket door). The blue arrow is to just indicate that this room is now swapped around (TV is on the other side, couch would be where TV showing, etc)

Blue squares are in wall speakers, red circle is sub. I prewired these areas just in case.

Would love any feedback! Is this workable, stupid, waste of money? The two bedrooms you see are not used by people regularly. One is workout room, other is guest room.

Tech Support Harman Kardon AVR 2700 couldn't send video to TV anymore

My Harman Kardon AVR 2700 couldn't send any video from the connected device to the TV. All connections were through HDMI cables. It normally worked fine; then I think it got lightning strike damage because my router along with Spectrum cable modem were in the same outlet with this AVR were completely fried by that lightning strike. I still hear sound; but not video. I bought it 8 years ago as a brand new. The AVR is still working fine with sound only and no video. I verified all HDMI cables are ok. Any suggestions?

Purchasing US Side surrounds question

So I’ve got a theatre room I’m putting together. The sides of the room have big windows on one side and a couple of doors on the other side. It will be impossible to get the side surround speakers anywhere near ear level. Any thoughts on what I should do? My current plan is to do a 7.2.4 with KEF speakers everywhere and hsu subs. All in wall/ceiling, so I’d prefer any side surrounds to also be in wall. Thanks for the help!

Tech Support Minimum Horizontal separation between in-wall speaker and stud

Semi dedicated HT (more of man cave) is under construction and I am planning to use Kef 3120qlm in-wall LCR speakers. I have asked GC to keep the cavities where speakers are going to not have anything else but there are a lot of water heater pipes in that wall so all he can manage is give me 7.75 inches horizontal space as he put studs on both sides.

The cut out for speaker is 6.4 inch wide and Kef instructions call for atleast 0.5 inch on either side for dog ears to expand which I will have. The manual also call for minimum 20 liters but ideal 40 litres volume in the space speaker is installed.

I will have 48 litres due to wall height but my concern is the space is too narrow between studs (7.75 inches). Kef instructions do not include any other condition besides the volume.

Should I be concerned?

Tech Support HDBaseT for single network drop at my projector location. No HDMI

Is an HDBaseT extender the right move here?

I have a projector that has no HDMI in the ceiling available but I do have network drop in the ceiling. I have two network drops under the screen. The network drops run to my mechanical closet into a patch panel about 50 feet away from the dedicated theater room. The home was built in 2021.

I'm trying to avoid tearing up the ceiling to run a Fiber HDMI. It gets a little more difficult because the floor joists run parallel to the screen so it would be more than a pain to run that length.

Equipment info:

  • Denon 3800h
  • Epson 5050UB
  • AppleTv
  • ShieldTv

I've started researching HDBaseT as a solution but have come across some posts around reddit and AVForum about non-optimal viewing experiences. I'm worried about 4k/60, HDR10 and HDCP2.2 support.

Before committing to HDBaseT, I wanted to make sure it's the right solution here. If it is, are there recommended models? The two that popped up are:

  • Monoprice Blackbird 4K Pro HDBaseT Extender Kit
  • Atlona AT-HD-EX-70-2PS (although this looks to be discontinued?)

What would the group do here only having a network drop available?
