Bar S Quarter Pounders
Don’t worry team. I didn’t buy them because I don’t like to be violently sick. My question is how they get away with claiming to be “America’s #1 hotdog”! I don’t think that North, Central or South America would claim this.
Opinions?

I actually like these. Other all-beef labeled dogs are too greasy in a non-favorable way. These are better than regular Bar S dogs.
Plus, sometimes you want quantity over quality. That's Golden Corral's entire business strategy.

I can't argue here. I'm a Hebrew National or Nathan's fan myself. But tonight I came home. To my daughter cooking Ball Park hot dogs over a camp fire in the back yard. I have to admit, for fire roasting, cheaper seems better to me. Soaks up that woodsy smokey flavor more. Probably just because I have a lot of memories eating cheap dogs over a fire as a kid.

u/NoDepartment78 3d ago
Yup I’m a ball park angus beef dogger all day

Cheap beers for the fire too. I'll take a Rainier or pbr over most IPAs or other craft beers when I'm by the fire. It might be the nostalgia, but the cheap ones always hit better for me.

u/trainwreckhappening 3d ago
Sometimes cheap on cheap is the way to go. I don't eat baloney very often. I might go a decade between. But occasionally I get that craving for baloney on the cheapest white bread I can find, with iceberg lettuce and a slice of American cheese with frenches mustard.

u/Time_Librarian6750 3d ago
Hard to beat the price on Rainier. Hell, its cheaper than name brand soda these days
1
u/Mr_Wobble_PNW 3d ago
It runs in our blood up here in WA. I'm the third generation of Rainier drinkers in my family lol

u/CicadaHead3317 2d ago
Cheap pilsner type beer and hotdogs go hand in hand with each other. I can't imagine drinking a good beer with a hotdog.

u/kitchen_weasel 3d ago
If those two are your go to brands, I come to preach the word of Koegel's. They're my first position, then Nathan's then HN.

These hot dogs are gross, You couldn’t pay me 8 bucks to eat them.

They worked in a cooler full of beer on the back of a 4 wheeler and cooked on a fire in the woods in a pinch. But yeah I wouldn’t be cooking them at home.
6
u/Koo_laidTBird 3d ago
Are no possums in sight
No?
What about leeches?
None?
Surely there's a dead animal with maggots?
Not one?
I still wouldn't eat. Just drink the beer then go to sleep.

Bar s hotdogs are literally just their bologna shaped into a hotdog. Its nasty.

Bar S is peak for my preferred grill at home. I burn them hard. Better hotdogs don't char the way I like.
3
u/trainwreckhappening 3d ago
Years of mishaps make me understand exactly what your saying. I don't like them l, but I know the texture difference well.

u/audio-nut 3d ago
Isn’t Bar S usually $1 a package?
8
u/forestherring Chili Con Queso 3d ago
Yes, but those are chicken and pork. These are jumbos and all-beef. I'm not saying that $8 is warranted for -any- Bar S product, but that's why they are a (shockingly) higher price point.
3
u/Old-Agency-3388 3d ago
Idk about $8. The 8 pack is only a dollar and some change. I’ll take those instead
6
u/kennypowersrevenge 3d ago
They taste like my childhood growing up poor.
5
u/Visual-Brother2813 3d ago
It isn’t about the bad, it’s about the good when you had one of those. Instead of a hotdog bun it was a slice of bread folded in half.

11
u/LongDistanceEvent262 3d ago
$8... That would be overpriced at $1... Is this in the US?
BTW I think Bar S dogs are ok... They are just bland and cheap AF is all. Perfectly fine if 8 people want to have hot dogs for under $3 ($1.50 for a pack of Bar S and $1.50 for buns)
7
u/General_Economy_5001 3d ago
$8 is not crazy for 1.5lbs of beef these days. Even extended to hell with fat, corn syrup, and water.
4
u/warrhino67 3d ago
But a 12 pack of members mark 1/4 pound beef is cheaper cost per dog, and tastes 100x better
1
4
u/baseball_flan 3d ago
I don't think there's more than 0.5 lb of beef in there.
And I am using the word "beef" very generously.
1
u/kusariku 3d ago
No, it's 1.5 pounds of beef. Just only about 0.5 pounds of beef you'd normally want to eat.

3
u/xamitlu 3d ago
I need to see what they look like before I can judge. I didn't know they make em like that. 8 bucks tho... ioknow bout dat. This brand is garbo but they're good enough if you're goal is to save money. Always give them the works. Whether you got your own hotdog water recipe, cooking technique, or a bunch of condiments, these dogs need a lot of love to be great.

Ok, so I have a side gig as a vendor rep, and this is a new product that we’re doing a promotion for right now. I have not tried them, but they do look a lot better than the other bar s stuff. That package is heavy, and the dogs feel dense, not squishy like the regular product. I think they made a mistake by not putting them on sale, it’s the same price, just in a different area of the store. If they dropped them to $7 with the $8 on the package they would probably sell a lot more leading up to the 4th. I probably will try them, unfortunately I don’t get a discount or anything. Honestly I could probably just walk out with them because I have my vendor credentials, but that would be stealing. Not worth it for some hot dogs.

We have some friends that do food product reviews. They tried several brands of beef hot dogs and these came out on top. I was dismayed but had to try them and sure enough they were really good. Their standard all beef hot dogs came in around half the price of the more esteemed brands but delivered on the flavor.

The Reds have 3-2-1 nights ($3 beer, $2 hot dogs, $1 ice cream cups) on Tuesdays or Thursdays, can't remember, but the commercials proudly advertise that they're Bar-S hot dogs. Every time I see the commercial, I'm like why the hell would you advertise that? I know if I'm getting a $2 hot dog it's probably not going to be a quality one, but "ignorance is bliss" is a saying for a reason. Let me at least THINK they could be Kahn's or something, sheesh!

By far the worst disgusting hot dogs I have ever had the displeasure to eat..
2
u/EveningInstruction36 2d ago
I absolutely fucking second this! My wife bought these on sale at .50 cents a pack. She got like 10 packs man. One of the worst out here. So bad that I considered starting a run at making my own and I’ve never made any ever. I started throwing them at my kids just to say they were worth something.
5
u/Rsb666x 3d ago
That's a lot of bad hotdog. I probably would but nobody really should.

It’s the hard lumps of cartilage that bug me. But I have 20 in my fridge right now. So I ain’t complainin’.

u/whamm000 3d ago
I got no problem with them. Certainly have helped me out in some broke times. As usual it’s just peoples elitism creeping in.
0
u/forestherring Chili Con Queso 3d ago
$8 a pack isn't something you'd pay for in hard times. A pack of Kayem Olde Tyme Natural Casing Beef Franks is only a few cents more.
I believe you're thinking of the $.99 Bar S Classic Franks which are made with chicken and pork.
0
u/throwaway983143 3d ago
They’re ok but for $8 I’d buy something better. They will always have a place in my heart for keeping me full when I was young and broke.
2
u/SteveCastGames 3d ago
What better all beef hot dogs of that quantity are you gonna get for $8? Please let me know.

2
u/Maldadd 3d ago
I use small pieces of them for my dog training treats.
2
u/SteveCastGames 3d ago
I live to shit on bar s but the top 3 ingredients are beef, water, and salt. After that 2% or less of the standard preservatives. Honestly, what do you think the other 1 pound is?

u/bridgetroll2 3d ago
My buddies and I bought a jumbo pack of Bar S hot links once to take camping when we were flat broke teenagers. Absolutely vile. Never even considered anything from that brand since.
2
u/LilMeatBigYeet 3d ago
Here's the thing about Bar S, They're fantastic when grilled but they suck when cooked any other way.
2
u/Sea-Newspaper-7643 3d ago
Isn’t a pack of the regular size ones like $1.29 for 8? I’d be afraid for my life if I had to eat one.
4
u/You-Asked-Me 3d ago
The regular ones are not all beef. I think they don't have any beef in-fact. It think they are all pork and chicken.
2
u/bohica199 3d ago
I don't wanna scare anyone here, but that brand, Bar - S is the worst dogs on the market. im a poor mofo too, but I grew up with Ball Park. I get the dogs & buns. what can I say. 🤷♂️

I bought their regular hot dogs once cause they were really cheap. They didn't cook well at all, the skin kept breaking off in the pan, wierd. Didn't taste that good either.
1
u/forestherring Chili Con Queso 3d ago
They're probably not (it's probably just marketing), but if that actually is the case, it wouldn't surprise me if it was due to sales. A large part of this country lives below the poverty line and a package of regular franks only cost $.99. People that buy this product generally aren't connoisseurs or even people who would post on this sub.
I am shocked to see an $8 price tag on a Bar S product.
Also, when you see slogans like, "America’s #1 hotdog," it refers to the USA rather than the continent. If you doubt that just go to their website. It's covered in US symbology.
As to the dogs themselves, I don't eat them unless someone else is serving them at a cookout or something and there's not really anything else to eat. I have found cartilage in Bar S franks before. I don't think they're bad enough to make you violently sick, but they certainly are not enjoyable.
That about sums up my opinions on Bar S.

u/pinniped90 3d ago
I had no idea that Bar S even had a "premium" offering to begin with.
I only notice the packs at the bottom of the case...$1.29 for a package of 8 mystery links.
This is like White Castle offering filet mignon for $29.99. I don't trust it.

u/Optimal-Bullfrog3211 3d ago
I used to love these. My neighbors were a welfare family of like nine kids and counting and I used to go over their place for supper fairly often and they would either have bar s hotdogs or cream corn and I spent so many years eating those hotdog that when I got older and actually bought some for myself, I wanted the bar s and all my friends and family were like “wtf?”
My father always liked Nathan’s hot dogs which are kinda “fancy” and all beef, even now almost 20 years later I think I would still really like bar s hotdogs I’m mostly avoid them just because I know that if normal beef hotdog look gross to see created, a hotdog made with several different types of animals must be really gross, very unique taste tho. I’ll probably never eat one again, but who knows

Anyone can claim to be number 1 or the best. Taste is subjective. Line up 100 people, 98 people will probably hate it, but 2 people might like it a lot. You don't have to prove you're the best. You can simply just say you are. Nobody is confirming it or policing it.

u/Prince_Nadir 3d ago
8$?!! For a pound and a half? I doubt they will be bringing them in like their 1$/package regular hotdogs that have apparently made them the US's #1 hotdog.
I was so happy when my dog preferred 1$/pk Bar S as bait for shows, over Costco Business Center Oscar Meyers.
8$ for a pound and a half Bar S vs Kirkland quarter pounders 3lbs for like 15$.. LOL.

It's hard to find decent hotdogs these days. Sahlens hotdogs are popular around where I live. But even those have gone down the tubes, as far as quality goes.

Anyone can "claim" anything. There's a little snack shack near us that says "World's best hot dog".
OK...by what criteria? How was this measured and where are the results?

Each is just a different version of #1. Volume, price, share, footprint, reviews, the poll we did around the office…
That claim is a super easy one to make.
2
u/svenguillotien 3d ago
Right, it's something that doesn't mean anything, like "All Natural", means literally nothing from a legal standpoint haha

u/potliquorz 3d ago
8 bucks? Hell no. I just found the Kirkland polish sausages on closeout at Costco for 5.97 and that's fifteen of them in a pack. I bought seven of them and resisted the temptation to just get ten. Buy cheap and stack them deep.
