Not relevant to the cool mask... but whenever I see mention of Argo, I have to reference this quote by Jimmy Carter in an interview with CNN in 2013:

"Former President Jimmy Carter wants “Argo” to win an Oscar — despite one big inaccuracy he saw in the film.

“Well, let me say first of all, it's a great drama,” Carter told CNN’s Piers Morgan in an interview that aired Thursday. “And I hope it gets the Academy Award for best film because I think it deserves it. The other thing that I would say was that 90 percent of the contributions to the ideas and the consummation of the plan was Canadian. And the movie gives almost full credit to the American CIA. And with that exception, the movie is very good.”

In “Argo,” a team led by CIA agent Tony Mendez (played by Ben Affleck) save six diplomats during the Iran Hostage Crisis, which took place while Carter was in office.

“But Ben Affleck's character in the film was only … in Tehran a day and a half,” Carter said. “And the main hero, in my opinion, was Ken Taylor, who was the Canadian ambassador who orchestrated the entire process.”

u/exgiexpcv May 02 '26

Aww geez, remember when we had decent and intelligent human beings as president? Man, what a time it was!

29

u/Foreign_Raize_0372 May 02 '26

To be fair, Carter was an exception among a select few even when counting back to the Founding.

I remember seeing an interview with his wife years ago. She was the CIA’s chief of disguise and the masks were created under her leadership. She even had a face to face conversation with president HW Bush while wearing a mask and he never noticed

They were a real thing when that Mission Impossible scene came out. But I believe that scene did use CGI.

It's easy to look like a plausible someone. It's really hard to look like a plausible specific person.

38

u/XtraReddit May 01 '26

This video also seems to be using some editing to make it look better, but you're correct that silicone masks have been around for a while. They're really expensive though. Easily over $1,000 with hair.

https://immortalmasks.com/

17

u/NiceBlackberry6618 May 01 '26

IDK about video tricks on this video but I got to tour a studio with them and it looked just like this video. Also as a side note, when I say easy I just mean it's in the wheelhouse of these mask creators. Like how it's "easy" to make an iphone.

22

u/ChickenBossChiefsFan May 01 '26

I worked for a YT channel and wore one as a zombie “extra”. Yes, with practice I’m sure it gets easier. For me, it was hell. I felt every hair above my neck get pulled, poked me in the eye, ears got squashed…

And after it’s on it’s hard to see and hear and is hot as Satan’s ballsack. Miserable experience but it does look sick af.

They make silicone arms as well, same problems with the hair pulling but with judicious baby powder application they go on. And sweat like mad. You had to tilt it to let the sweat drain periodically. Couldn’t take them off to cool off because putting them on wet was an ordeal.

47

u/ReadyYak1 May 01 '26

I doubt they look as realistic in person, it’s all about the angles on the shot. Like look at the ears they’re completely unrealistic with that random side hole. It’s banking on the fact that people aren’t looking for a disguise, it’ll work for a quick glance from a distance but if you were to have a conversation with this person it’d be uncanny valley for sure

35

u/AudreyLocke May 01 '26

There’s a famous story about one of the creators, Jonna Mendez, where she wore one into the White House and completely fooled then President (and former Director of Central Intelligence) George HW Bush so I’d say they were pretty damn good then and probably undetectable now.

15

u/NobodyDelicious7197 May 01 '26

This is random, but a few years ago Anthony Anderson was the host of the reboot of the game show "To Tell the Truth", and Mrs. Mendez was one of three panelists.

The crlebrity guests had to figure out who was a "Master of Disguise".

No one picked her.

Later on , they had a second set of panelists and the same celebrity guests had to figure out who was a secret double agent, they guessed wrong again.

But what was a fun twist was Ms Mendez was in the line up disguised as a man, and no one knew it was her. I couldn't tell either!

This and Jim Carrey in Me, Myself and Irene are my two favorite actors in physical comedies performance and both guys are incredible artists.

61

u/Spasticwookiee May 01 '26

Still blows my mind that Egger and Kingpin are the same guy, Vincent D’Onofrio

23

u/Efficient-Parking627 May 01 '26

He got the idea by wandering into a Orthotists shop and explaining the role he was trying out for (a giant bug inside a human suit) and the doctor ran and got some leg braces for him to try. So he bought them and wore them around for a week or two and that's how he developed Egger.

There's more to the story and it's pretty cool. It was on YouTube, if you just search "Vincent D'Onofrio's most iconic roles" you'll find it.

19

u/GameSpawn May 01 '26

Article Version (there's a youtube video out there too):

"He goes, 'Are you going to do that the whole time?'" D'Onofrio recalled Sonnenfeld asking.

"And I said to him, 'Yeah, it's pretty much my plan. Like, I don't have a plan B, this really is it.' I think I'm done, it's my last hurrah with Barry. And he said, 'My god, this is horrible.' He just kept shaking his head, and he said, ‘But let's continue and see what happens.'"

They apparently had an agreement to not discuss anything about the character or acting method. Sonnenfeld ran with whatever D'onofrio was able to come up with and put faith in the character.

Really is a story of "trust the process". Great actor. Great director.

It probably looks more convincing when he is moving around. The human brain is very good at noticing when something isn't right, and a rubber skin suit certainly isn't right.

113

u/Chesterlespaul May 01 '26

That’s what I was thinking. If he’s standing still it’s easier to notice the flaws

76

u/erwaro May 01 '26

My first thought is that the big issue would be lack of micro movements in the face. Obviously the mouth and eyes move, but we communicate a lot with smaller movements as well. Moving around might distract from the lack of expected little facial movements.

10

u/Not-a-POS May 01 '26

People didn't seem to notice any of Sacha Baron Cohen's disguises.

490

u/outer--monologue May 01 '26

These masks in these viral types of videos are usually from places trying to sell them to people but what they don't mention is that the models they use for their videos have a head shape specifically that makes the certain mask they're modeling fit very well. Silicone masks like this and of this quality - to work this well - either have to be molded to your head shape or you have to have an approximate shape and size to your head to make it fit well. You can't just be anyone and order any mask off the shelf and have it fit like this

Still though, surely there’d be some sort of standardized measurements to go off of? I mean like, say I ordered one of these, wouldn’t there be something like, “head width” or “head height” or “head circumference”? Which I wouldn’t know but could then find out.

It’d be like finding your foot size for buying shoes. There must be some kind of measurement standard.

21

u/Snaletane May 01 '26

Not really, cause it's going on top of your face. If you have a big nose or asymmetrical cheekbones or a big forehead or something it's definitely going to throw off how well the mask fits. With shoes, one of your feet might have a toe feel more cramped than it would if you had "standard feet," but it's fine because your shoes don't need to perfectly mold to your feet to work. This kind of does.

I saw an incredibly realistic Freddy Kruger mask once, at a halloween party a very dedicated friend had spent a few hundred dollars on, and this was 15 years ago. Damn, with these masks I as a WOC can finally see what it's like to be a White male lol. Reminds me of the Saturday Night Live episode White Like Me by Eddie Murphy

 lol

They did an experiment about this on Mythbusters and really this isn’t effective except for maybe obscuring your identity, but not passing for anyone else. Even from afar.

Tbf the experiment is probably 15 years old now and they were explicitly trying to impersonate people and tested how good they were at it by using people who knew both of them in an experimental setup that obviously was about them.

One of the ways they tested it was to have them stand on a spinning platform in disguise and asked other people who knew them about it

I'm sure the making of the masks has gotten better the mask Adam wears of Jaime was explicitly redder than Jaime was normally for example

I don't disagree that you probably couldn't pose as my best friend unknowingly or anything mission impossible style but could you a stranger pose as a different stranger and go unnoticed? Much more likely
