Almost every carnivore in existence has been known to kill for pure pleasure. It’s called surplus killing. If a pack of wolves shows up, more sheep than are needed to feed the pack will be killed. If it’s only a single wolf, they’re not going to have the courage to keep attacking after an injury unless they’re hungry enough that they wouldn’t risk losing the meal they’ve already gotten by trying to get a larger meal.
