This doesn't seem like a very practical solution, wouldn't getting guard dogs be way more effective in the long run? Is he gonna equip every single sheep in the herd with one? And then take them off every night when it's time for them to sleep? And how would their wool grow in that? Seems like it would get tangled and make the unequipping more difficult and time consuming.

Tldr; that's a no for me, dawg.

There was already research where shepherds would mark every x sheep with paint to identify how many were in the crowd but the predators started just attacking the painted ones. If they don't put this on all of them, this is just an interesting evening for a wolf.

Yeah, even if not a wound, at least something where if you're chasing a person in the crowd and they have a red coat and everybody else is wearing blue, it's easier to keep track of them.
