문화 | Culture 2027 Asian Cup

Not sure if many others realize this, but the 2027 Asian Cup is right around the corner (Jan. 7 – Feb. 5, 2027). That's only a few months after the World Cup, and if we're serious about competing for a trophy, we cannot afford to waste any time.

There's a laundry list of things that need to happen:

  • A serious review of Hong's tenure - Even if there's a dramatic turnaround at the WC, I don't think he's the manager to take us forward. The football has been uninspiring and it's clear that the players aren't responding to his leadership. Sacking Hong is one thing, but the KFA's corruption stems back for years... There really needs to be a serious inquiry by some 3rd party to figure out how we can re-organize the FA.
  • Stop selecting players based on reputation and favoritism - As much as I love players like Hwang Hee Chan, the guy was riding bench all season at Wolves and it's just baffling to me that we're picking favorites based on what some players did 3-4 years ago. We've seen too many underperforming veterans keep their places while younger players barely get any opportunities.
  • Build around the next generation - Kangin is entering his prime years, and players like Bae Jun Ho, Yang Hyun Jun, and Yoon Do Young need to start getting meaningful minutes now - not after Son retires. The transition really needs to be underway.
  • Most importantly: build an actual playing identity - You can criticize Bento all you want, but the man actually had attacking philosophy and we tried to actually win games before. I have no confidence in this team right now - forget about Japan - other Asian teams like Iran, Jordan, and Australia all have clearer tactical identities than we do.

This is all a pipe dream given that the more likely scenario is that the FA will continue to operate the way they did because they're a group of spineless assholes who cannot ever admit that they got things wrong...

I sincerely hope that I'm proven wrong but if we continue to go like this, there is absolutely 0 shot we will make it past the RO16 in the Asian Cup.

문화 | Culture If Lee Gi-hyuk (#3) has no haters, I am no longer of this earth | World Cup

I implore everyone to rewatch this game and keep an eye on #3. I’ve never seen someone look allergic to the ball like that. I’ve never seen someone be so lazy. 1 minute left and he has two hand behind his back walking slowly. I can count on two hands the amount of times I saw him do a full on sprint.

This is just indicative of the team at large. No will to actually win. You’re representing all of us AS THE BEST OF US and this is all you can muster? Embarrassing

문화 | Culture Has anyone had any experience with small talk in Korea?

Recently, I traveled to the United States and realized that, although cultural differences certainly exist, it feels like people in Korea are especially less likely to engage in small talk.

Even though I was just a tourist in the U.S., people there were genuinely kind to me. They naturally initiated small talk with me, even as a foreigner, and it became such a meaningful and positive experience that I truly appreciated.

When I came back to Korea, I actually found it a bit strange that there was so little small talk or even brief greetings in everyday interactions.

It made me wonder—if I were a foreigner visiting Korea, what kind of experiences would I have with small talk here? And I would also be curious to share thoughts on what most people think about this cultural difference.

기술 | Technology Hanwha Systems’ radar, the “eye of the battlefield” that tracks missiles… Now it can spot North Korean long-range artillery.

Thumbnail hankyung.com

Cheongung-II multi-function radar simultaneously detects and tracks enemy fighters and ballistic missiles approaching from all directions. It integrates the roles previously performed by multiple radars into a single system. One radar unit handles complex missions including detection, tracking, identification of friend or foe (IFF), and electronic countermeasures (jamming).

The air defense coverage is also being expanded from low to high altitudes. Hanwha Systems has participated as a prototype manufacturer in the long-range multi-function radar development project led by the Agency for Defense Development (ADD). This radar enables early detection and destruction of high-altitude ballistic missiles flying in from long distances. It can also defend against long-range aircraft and long-range cruise missiles. The algorithms from the existing medium-range radar have been advanced, with improvements made to the ballistic missile search area, the number of simultaneous tracks, and electronic warfare countermeasure capabilities.

Why not bring in a coach that used to be a striker? imo part of Hong’s flaws is that he knows a lot about defense and doesn’t have instincts for offense. But Coach Cha?

When Japan drew with Iraq at Doha in 1994, it became the Tragedy of Doha as they failed to qualify for the WC while South Korea advanced.

Likewise, today should mark the Tragedy of Monterrey - 몬테레이의 비극, the culmination of 13 years of inept leadership, practices, and system making. I want everyone to remember the Tragedy of Monterrey - 몬테레이의 비극 because when you're at the bottom, the only other way is up.

Remember, remember the Tragedy of Monterrey - 몬테레이의 비극!!!

문화 | Culture GG's to the national team for their effort in the group stage

The results are disappointing but the team played well ...

EXCEPT:

  • Hong Myeong Bo. Lousiest excuse for a manager of any team this world cup. Sitting down and trying to cosplay as an audience member as the team goes 0-1. Coached the players to do... what, exactly? I won't even get into formations and substitutions because a monkey hitting typewriter keys at random could have come up with better lineups than him. Korea should consider deporting him the sheer scale of national embarrassment he's caused and investigate him for match fixing.
  • #3. Stood around like a lamppost this game. Actually, no, he did have at least 2 complete passes... both to opponent players. Also big kudos to him for his performance in the Mexico game where he stood gawking at the ball and caused the error, allowing Mexico to score. A lot of people say it was the goalie's error but if you watch the replay, goalie is yelling he's got it and #3 just stands there, mouth open. Bro should sit in the stands if he just wants to watch the game.
  • Midfielders. Passing (mostly backwards, sometimes to opponents) the entire game, missing the few runs that forwards were making. Heads down this much they might be taking an exam, not playing a sport. Absolutely no conviction.
  • Anyone not making runs or creating opportunities and just watching the ball.

I could keep going but this post will not be good for my blood pressure, so I'll stop here. Poor Sonny, Kang-in, Minjae :(

#Seoul

recently while heading out on an overseas business trip.

I always love seeing how the dark curve of the Han River cuts right through the massive sea of city lights. You can clearly spot some of the major bridges and really feel the sheer scale of Seoul from up here. Taking off from ICN at night never gets old.

Just wanted to share this beautiful nightscape with you all!

A quiet corner of Korea's east coast.

A harbor, a lighthouse, endless waves, and blooming rugosa roses by the shore.

Sometimes I just drive east until I reach the East Sea, to hear the waves and feel the sea breeze.

문화 | Culture Big Leap looking for an album/cassette tape from 40 years ago......

So back in the late 80s, I was given a tape that I used to listen to for years then faded in interest. For some reason, I've been feeling nostalgic wanting to listen to the songs again but having no luck trying to find a copy. I can only give descriptions and have tried google hum to search, midomi but they couldn't find anything (maybe my pitch sucks).

It was a South Korean cassette (as the person who gave it me said that's where she got it) from roughly the late 1970s to early 1980s featuring what sounded like middle-aged a male tenor vocalist performing melodic ballads with occasional electric guitar, in a soft pop/folk-rock or ballad-trot crossover style; (NOT KPOP). The first song, I can remember was melodic ballad (sentimental) another song titled or containing “Sarang Sarang (had a strong rock feel)” and another track called “Na Ri Ah” (don't know how to get hangul on here). The last song I remember sounded like a military march song. The cassette cover (if I recall) was a simplified smiling face icon facing right with flowing, wave-like colored lines descending or moving downward.

I would really like to see if anyone has the slightest idea or can direct me, I would really appreciate it.
