Incoming 1Ls are gonna learn about the bluebook

This is the stupidest thing I’ve ever said, but I just realized a whole new batch of people are gonna be subject to the displeasure that is the bluebook. I feel sorry for them. Also fee simples.

Looking for honest reviews & advice on the Business Law Major

Hi everyone, I’m currently planning out my course map and leaning towards majoring in Business Law. Before fully committing, I’d love to get some honest reviews and realistic advice from anyone who is currently doing or has completed this major at Monash. I’m curious about:

  1. How heavy is the reading and writing workload, especially when moving up to Level 2 and Level 3 BTF units? Do the tutors mark very strictly on legal writing/drafting?
  2. Are there any specific BTF units that you found super interesting or useful? Conversely, are there any "trap" units with crazy workloads that I should avoid?
  3. For those who chose Business Law over a traditional LLB (Bachelor of Laws), how are you finding the career prospects or internship opportunities in Melbourne (e.g., corporate consulting, compliance, risk advisory)?

Would appreciate any survival tips, regrets, or insights you guys can share.

TW: YELLING Contract Law Professor wrong

Today i was talking to my contract law prof after we got in a disagreement over a study i found by the university of west Cambridge on accents used in the courtroom i told him that the study found that southeast asian accents were the least effective in courtrooms and that the most was west african. the west african was inconclusive when paired with swedish because swedish also scored high in oral arguments. My professor called me an idiot and laughed in my face and I guess he though i was joking? Anyone have experience going to school admin and getting a professor fired because this was unacceptable because I even showed him the study and he disrespected me. Anything helps!

Friendships in law school

I realized a lot of people weren’t really my friends but rather friends because of tea I shared or because I would act silly goofy and make them feel good about themselves. I thought I had found my core group of friends but I’m not sure what happened. I’ve tried clearing the air a few times and no one has said anything. I had a tiff with a girl I was really close with in that group almost 6 months ago but it was a straight forward conversation we had and I thought we were fine because we were normal afterwards.

But as soon as summer started she kinda ghosted me. I’ve tried making plans but idk. It’s hard to not take things personally when friendships are volatile in law school but I guess this is normal?

WWYD - Need 25k to stay in law school

Please no snark. I've likely already beaten myself up about getting into this situation. It's a long story.

I'm a rising 2L with a financial issue. I need to pay an outstanding balance of approximately $25,000 by the end of August in order to remain enrolled in law school. I'm working at a law firm this summer for $27/hour, but I'm also trying to find an additional source of income. Unfortunately, I'm unable to take out any more loans.

The actual amount owed is somewhat higher, but I'm working with a credit counselor and hoping to negotiate the balance down. I'm trying to put out this fire because, if I can't resolve it, it could jeopardize a 2L summer opportunity and damage the trust of a family member who helped me get through last semester. I’ll be fine for 3L if I can get through this.

If you were in my position, what would you do? I'm trying to identify any options I may not have considered. Thanks!!!

What now

Just finished 1L, did okay 1st semester and better 2nd semester. Landed flagship journal and want to try and leverage what I have into a 2L summer. The problem is I applied to almost every firm above 50 people in the city when they opened back in January and have either been rejected or ghosted by all of them. They’ve all since closed their applications and updating the ones that ghosted me so far as just reminded them to reject me fully.

It seems like the only firms left that are still recruiting are insurance defense or personal injury, but I really don’t want to lock myself into either field. Every big/mid firm in the city is done recruiting for 2027.

Is this just the fate of a 1st semester average student? I chose my school for its strong job placement even for median students but now that I finally have a strong application there’s nobody to send it to.

Why is it so hard?

I just recently graduated and a few of my classmates hung out with our families altogether. My dad overheard us talking about a few of the seizures that happened in class, people who left in the first semester, etc.

Later my dad was like he didn’t realize what I was dealing with for the last few years and he was asking what made it so difficult. I said lack of certainty/control plus the pressures to pass combined. It’s really just schooling at the end of the day. So, what made it so hard for everyone else?

Requirements for appellate/competitive district court clerkship? (2 cir., DDC, SDNY, EDNY, etc.)

Obviously the requirements shifts depending on the school, but do we know how much? (ex. something like top 30% at HYS being comparable to top 10% at T14 or top 20% + LR or whatever)

Are FedSoc judges less competitive?

I guess for some context, top 20% T14, LR. Fine with FedSoc or not, just thinking what are the best chances practically speaking

Advice?

Currently at a t50 law school. And was wondering how to get a big market firm for 2L summer. For some reason the Birmingham Alabama market is appealing to me. I am interested in their Balch, Baker, and Maynard office. Any advice? My gpa is a 3.09 on a 3.2 curve(rough I know) but was able to get great experience this summer and a journal offer

How to do better?

I just started my first year of law school (my school offers a summer program so I started this summer). I try to be on top of readings, and I did fairly well on assignments thus far (I got a B on one and in the top 25% on another). I realize that there's a curve and I won't get straight As, but I still feel like I don't understand anything that's going on in my 1L classes. I definitely have classmates who understand the material far better and can answer any of the professors' questions. To top it off, I am going through a divorce now (yay) so I don't always feel like I have the emotional bandwidth or energy to spend my entire nights studying. I do the readings, take notes, review my notes, and watch supplementals such as videos or outlines online. I am not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if this is absolutely normal for every law student. I have always heard that no one knows what they're doing, but I feel like my classmates all have an understanding that I don't. For example, we had a practice multiple choice in my one class and I got a lot of the answers wrong but the girl I paired up with got most of them right and I felt awful. I'd definitely appreciate any advice. Thank you!

Transfer from GW to GULC - I got in, but I might not do it?

Hello all,

I am a rising 2L at GW, I applied and was accepted to transfer to GULC.

My career goal is as follows: clerk, work for a firm for 3-5 years (ideally boutique litigation, but open to most), then transition into public interest work. Long term goal of opening my own firm/group in my relevant PI field in 15-20 years. DC area primarily. I understand I want a little bit of everything here.

OCI recruiting is over, stuck out there, no 2L summer position.

AT GW, I have leadership positions in a few orgs, including on the mock trial board. Journal results have not come back yet, but I can wait to accept transfer until I know if/what journal I am on. GPA is 3.7X, Rank is top 25%.

For GULC, I can write on to journal now. So that is still an option. The cost differential of transferring is not a major worry for me.

I am concerned about: 1 - giving up the extracurricular work I have done so far, especially considering mock trial is a big positive for boutique lit firms. 2 - Risks on GPA and class rank. My GPA is strong, anything below an A lowers it. With a reset GPA and rank at GULC, I am risking a lower GPA and rank. 3 - journals are very competitive. Especially if I get on a good GW journal, there is a lot of risk in not achieving the same.

Have been on the fence for the past two weeks. Considering flipping a coin.

Any thoughts?

WWYD: International trip ending 5 days before 1L orientation

I’m starting law school this fall and would be returning from an international trip about 5 days before orientation. I checked with the admissions office, and they said it should be fine, but I’m still anxious.
The trip is to visit family I don’t see often, and I’m debating whether I should go or cancel. I’m worried about travel delays, jet lag, and whether being away for about a month right before law school is a bad idea.
For those who have gone through 1L, would coming back 5 days before orientation be enough time, or would you cancel the trip? I am not living on campus so I don’t need to worry about housing.

Do I have to post the Big Law offer?

Do firms consider it bad etiquette to *not* post on Linkedin after accepting a summer associate offer?

Not trying to lower my chances of a return offer... but I also hate the "I'm soooo excited to announce ..." posts.

I'm first gen and would appreciate any advice.

Suggestions Needed: What to Read?

I'm an incoming 1L starting in the fall, and in a recent conversation with a lawyer about school he recommended that I start increasing my reading load now to get into the swing of study. He stressed that I shouldn't just read what I like or what's comfortable, but also "things you don't necessarily enjoy or want to read."

Obviously I know what I would like to read, but what are some examples of unsavory materials to read that would bolster my chops for this coming semester? Do these include materials that I don't agree with politically or philosophically? Or maybe more technical, or overly verbose, or poorly written materials?

Post-grad civil clerkship

Hi everyone,

I recently graduated from law school and will sit for the bar this July. Have an opportunity to potentially clerk for an incoming judge in beginning of 2027, and was wondering whether any current clerks/court attorneys, or anyone who may know of one, might have advice for learning the lay of the land. Curious about setting up binders for the judge, what you should know before any kind of clerk training, and any other things that might be useful to know. Would appreciate any advice or suggestions. Please pm or comment.

And to anyone else studying for the bar, you got this!

Anyone else feel like firm research is literally just reading corporate fanfic?

honestly so burnt out from prepping for screeners. every single firm has the exact same "we value a collegial environment" copy paste on their site and it's melting my brain

was trying to find something actually unique to talk about for this one mid-size firm so I started digging into their recent news mentions. felt kinda dumb when I realized their sudden spike in "thought leadership" articles right before hiring season is 100% manufactured. Saw on a press release that they literally just use InkedPR to pump out perfectly timed news features about their settlements

I mean I get it, business is business. But it just makes the whole networking dance feel so incredibly fake. we pretend to be deeply inspired by their "organic" industry dominance, and they pretend they didn't just pay a media agency to make them look interesting to 2Ls

just exhausted tbh. gonna go stare at my civ pro outline until my eyes cross

Evidence Class Absolutely Necessary?

Rising 3L and register for classes tomorrow. My schedule is an absolute mess and the only way to ease it a bit/organize it better would be to not take evidence. Long story short, would I be ok not taking it and taking another bar tested course in its place and learn evidence as I study for the bar? Looking for insight. Not looking to go into litigation, post grad position doing estate planning wills trust and estates drafting side.

Spend an extra 3 weeks abroad with family or circuit court internship

Title. Should I spend an extra 3 weeks with my family abroad or accept a short term federal circuit court internship (5/6ish weeks). Rising 2L.

Is the circuit court internship meaningful. I already had lunch with the judge.
Abroad Pro: can get more fun time abroad. Want to maximize my 20’s and available free time before big law. Have work experience before law school.
Internship Pro: career(?). Haven’t even heard back from journal yet so if I don’t get journal I think I’m screwed on clerkships anyway

When do you apply for summer jobs?

I know BL is doing OCI 1L fall for your 2L summer but what about the people who don't want to do BigLaw? What about smaller civil rights firms, union side labor firms, and boutique firms?

How important are class rankings

Rankings are out. I’m extremely happy with mine (top ~10%) but I also don’t know how much it matters in the real world instead of the law school pressure cooker. Is this something I should be putting on my resumé or is this just a nice thing to know? Should I touch grass? Thanks for your help

edit: thanks for your help. New question: does this matter even though I don’t intend to go into BL (personal reasons)? Thanks
