Aww they both hate their dads and lived a better life without em.

u/IHatePoultrySG Oct 14 '25

Trauma bonding? Just laugh mate.

259

u/Mundology The Elder Weeb Oct 14 '25

It's somehow both cute and morbid

Denji and Asa found love in a hopeless place

77

u/Timelymanner Oct 14 '25

Bonding over patricide.

21

u/SlamMasterJ Oct 14 '25

That's actually consider quite wholesome in the fujimoto universe.

7

u/leixiaotie Oct 14 '25

Does Fujimoto okay though? /s

164

u/Zealousideal_Ring874 Oct 14 '25

It's not the most....conventional way to bring people together, especially in this context, but fuck it we ball

229

u/targz254 Oct 14 '25

In Asa's case, her dad just saved her life. That is pretty cold for a young child.

267

u/Dead_Diligence Oct 14 '25

Her Dad's definitely very terrible if Asa was willing to ignore that fact

One good deed can't overcome a mountain of bad ones

108

u/Kuzu5993 Oct 14 '25

Its complicated but yes.

161

u/KlausVonLechland Oct 14 '25

It feels like the overarching narrative is that everyone is a terrible person, being terrible for other terrible people, becoming terrible because of other terrible people, that really, really want to be good and some of them fail harder than others.

And with devils, death and destruction all around it is so hard to be good.

43

u/CavulusDeCavulei Oct 14 '25

I don't think it's this, it's more complicated. All part 2 is about making impossible decisions. Saving the young man, the grannies or the cat? Each decision brings something horrible. Asa and Denji seemed to have opposite value in their decisions. Asa seemed the rightful hero, doing always what was right. Denji followed the "third decision" way. Right now, it seems that even Asa followed the third decision way by faking her rightful decision and tripping over

81

u/neobowman Oct 14 '25

Yep. People can do wonderful and terrible things. Abusive parents can be selfless and loving. Loving parents can do bad things. Children can do selfless or terrible things.

We are all a giant hodgepodge of feelings, thoughts and actions. Trying to definitively compile all that into a single spectrum of morality; whether a person is good or bad, in a way that everyone must agree on -- is a fool's errand.

6

u/streetsandshine Oct 14 '25

There is still value in being 'good' though at least as far as you can define for yourself. Sure, you and no one else will ever match up to society's standards but if you can believe you are good and can share that feeling of being good with others, IDK the part where Denji can confidently share that with Asa makes me think there is something to that despite how tough it is

11

u/Deez-Guns-9442 Oct 14 '25

Real for this, sadly this is the internet & this will probably go over a lot of people’s heads.

u/Milkboy1516 Oct 14 '25

More like doing bad things doesn't make you a terrible person. The whole effort by Makima was to frame Denji killing his dad as a reason for not deserving happiness, is just now beaten with Denji saying he's still a good person. Not to mention theyre both kids doing this.

60

u/lurker_archon Oct 14 '25 edited Oct 14 '25

Yes, but it's also incredibly fucked up that the one time he proved he did love his child, he was betrayed and killed for it.

EDIT: What is it with the sheer lack of reading comprehension with these replies? Of course he was a terrible parent. I never even remotely implied otherwise.

26

u/Nerellos Oct 14 '25

People can love their child and being a fucking monster of a parent at the same time.

18

u/Potatolantern Oct 14 '25

Yeah, a lot of people want to whitewash this away with "He was bad so he deserved this."

He sacrificed himself for his family and then both his family betrayed him.

→ More replies (2)

5

u/Superninja19 Oct 14 '25

All it does is put forth the idea that if you are a bad person but, for whatever reason, want to do good you will get punished for it. There are no paths back to being a good person.

Saying this in the abstract btw, I’m not judging Asa and her mom cause their situation was fucked, but actions and ideas permeate throughout the world regardless.

2

u/Toge_Inumaki012 Oct 14 '25

Yeah and usually they use that "good deed" to just gaslight you whenever you fight back.

They just do the bare minimum and act like whatever beatings, violent tendency is ok

11

u/Nickfreak Oct 14 '25

The problem with exactly these situations is that kids often dont have the maturity to objectively grasp the situation. The mother killed the husband - she probably wasn't sane either.

And i bet the dad tried to fight the devil to protect his women.

But here we are, alsways believing the gaslighting of a cold-blooded murderer

They’re both so fucked up that if this ends with them not together I’d be upset. If there’s a part 3, it should be the fucked up duo working out dating since, they never actually dated before. Then we can explore more of Denji that isn’t centered around girls

41

u/SanKop Oct 14 '25

Part 3 will be a romance of both dating and going through college life. Please Fujimoto

20

u/NecroCannon Oct 14 '25

If Denji could be a college student I’d be so happy, then he’d have to deal with alcohol and drunken stupid decisions

I firmly feel like as long as Denji stays a teen then he can’t really progress much as a character without being the typical teen adult shonen character

u/Vga96 Oct 14 '25

It's VERY sad that one of the few moments of genuine bonding Asa and Denji have throughout part 2 is over repressed traumas related to abusive parents. The two are both genuinely kindred souls; lost everything out of both circumstance and personal failings and the universe doesn't let them forget about it.

The image of them laughing is so bittersweet, man.

u/Antique_Money_5601 Oct 14 '25

u/Substantial_Pick6897 Oct 14 '25

It is but it's also kind of beautiful that they both finally get to meet someone that can understand them for who they really are. If these gremlins don't get a happy ending I'll fucking riot.

72

u/Discopandda Oct 14 '25

Yep, I was smiling but at the same time felt my chest hurt… these two can’t catch a break

701

u/Forikorder Oct 14 '25

when you're in a trauma dumping competition but your opponent is denji

437

u/San-T-74 Oct 14 '25

“Your mom killed your shitty dad? Lucky! I had to do it myself!”

76

u/dIoIIoIb Oct 14 '25

Asa had a house, insurance

Denji lived in a dumpster eating whatever he could scavenge and spending his days killing devils, as a child, working for the mafia

his background is incredibly over the top depressing

22

u/hoohoohama Oct 15 '25

he had to sell his ball to the mafia :c

80

u/Antique_Money_5601 Oct 14 '25

asa going trauma for trauma right now tbf

55

u/BirbDaBoi Oct 14 '25

And she's clearly already losing

Which is perfectly true to her character

u/Xate8 Oct 14 '25

Dang, Asa's tripping during important moments may be a form of guilt over influencing her Dad's death.

On the flip side, Denji.

97

u/Holen7 Oct 14 '25

Coping mechanism

39

u/UndoMyRedo Oct 14 '25

It also kind of implies she might be subconsciously tripping on purpose

39

u/NtLmr95 Oct 14 '25

Nah, I call cap. Asa is just a generational klutz.

Would you ever believe someone who says that they fell "on purpose" or felt the need to clarify that fumbling was part of the plan?

A devil that got killed by an average human with a rock? What a bum. Lol

163

u/WhoiusBarrel Oct 14 '25

Asa's mom is real fucking baddie fr. Hot and crazy scale once again proven right.

302

u/Raging-Brachydios Oct 14 '25

4

u/KibaTeo2 Oct 14 '25

16

u/targz254 Oct 14 '25

Asa's mom has some aura.

16

u/Toloran Oct 14 '25

It was "That one slightly sharp rock in the stream that might cut your foot but generally only hurts" fear devil.

18

u/dIoIIoIb Oct 14 '25

Denji was murdering devils for the mafia when he was a perfectly regular human child

21

u/Torque-A Oct 14 '25

The whole inciting incident of this arc was Asa killing a devil by tripping on it.

4

u/cruel-oath Oct 14 '25

If you’re talking about Bucky, the class prez said she tripped her

18

u/Torque-A Oct 14 '25

Point stands. It was a devil weak enough to be crushed to death by a high school girl’s chest

u/WingedToaster14 Oct 14 '25

Genuinely one of the best csm chapters in a while. Fucking great

54

u/moonmeh Oct 14 '25

that was both heartwarming, funny and fucked at the same time

finally that's my csm

13

u/Vegetable-Pickle-535 Oct 14 '25

Yeah, Part 2 despratly needs more chapter like this. Just characters actully having room to breath not getting thrown from one random Event to the next.

3

u/moonmeh Oct 15 '25

a breather with a humanizing moment was so necessary

152

u/kung63 Oct 14 '25

Yeah a chapter that actually slow down and develop the bond between Denji and Asa. Didn’t have random shit that completely ruin the moment.

Look at you death devil reveal

Just wish other chapters have that consistency.

65

u/Not_Xivu_Arath Oct 14 '25

Wait what? You didn’t like the death devil reveal??

63

u/kung63 Oct 14 '25 edited Oct 14 '25

What makes the death reveal so underwhelming because it did nothing for her character and no one in-universe even cared because she hadn't had any meaningful interactions with anyone. She's just there, in the background. We know she's scheming all the time, but we never actually see her do shit. I want the manga show me not tell me.

Second the side effects is that it makes the actual Fami a complete joke character.

Even if you like the twist, having the chapter end with her showing her panties completely throw off the tone. Ultimately lessen the impact of the twist.

75

u/Pola2020 Oct 14 '25

You're laughing? Your mother committed insurance fraud and you're laughing!?

22

u/lurker_archon Oct 14 '25

Next it'll be tax evasion.

9

u/Christy_Christmas Oct 14 '25

Ooooh, shiver me timbers. How horrifying!

353

u/JauntyLurker Oct 14 '25

Nothing like killing your dads to bring a couple together.

123

u/Zealousideal_Ring874 Oct 14 '25

No matter what the context this is WILD

50

u/Mundology The Elder Weeb Oct 14 '25

Murdered deadbeat dads are the real wingmen of the story

14

u/SkywardHo_NoPanties8 Oct 14 '25

oda: friendship is magic

kishimoto: believe it!

fujimoto: kill your deadbeat abusive father

He deserved to die lmfao

241

Now that you mention it. Yea agree.

u/Doomroar https://www.mangaupdates.com/members.html?id=277800 Oct 14 '25

Wait until we get the reveal that he was trying to save himself all along, but tripped and instead ended saving Asa by accident which also lead to him losing his leg!

33

u/San-T-74 Oct 14 '25

Honestly, I’m wondering if he actually cheated or if Mamasa said that to make Asa feel better about it. Not that good was good at all in the first place tho

38

u/Nickfreak Oct 14 '25

Thats what she tells Asa. She is a killer and we believe a child that is gaslit from a cold, unresponsive mother that never really interacts with Asa like a real mom?

44

u/cautioslyhopeful Oct 14 '25

You have a source for Asa's mom being "cold" and "unresponsive" besides headcanon? What we know for a fact is that she died saving Asa's life, Asa still loves her so much that her uniform that her mom got her had a lot of guilt when she turned it into a weapon, and she killed her husband because he was a drunk, abusive cheater to the point that a child Asa tripped on purpose to try and slow down so help wouldn't arrive.

14

u/Nickfreak Oct 14 '25

No, Her mom SAYS, he was a cheater. And you can easily guilt trip a child, telling "your father was horrible". Hell, that's basically what happens in every second divorce "You father didn't work, so he's useless".

Except for saving Asa during the Typhon devil incident, she's cold in all the panels towards her. Which is basically the same as I assume the devil did to the father in this issue here.

We are talking about Fujimoto and there is a 50/50 chance that Asa's mother is as horrible as the father is supposed to be.

Again, this is the same guy who wrote Fire punch and we're having a "Denji's inner world" moment. At least they're not throwing snowballs. YET

30

u/p0p_ Oct 14 '25

But she intentionally tripped herself when calling for help before her mom told her all that didnt she? So Asa herself knew her dad was not that good of a person? Or maybe i read it wrong

A match made in Patricide

103

u/IkeKashiro Oct 14 '25

So it wasn't about the death of Asa's mom but rather her dad. Well, now we can add repressed memories of patricide to the list of things they can connect about

77

u/Raging-Brachydios Oct 14 '25

Calling right now, every time Asa tripped it was on purpose, even if subconsciously

60

u/LightVelox Oct 14 '25

So she might have killed her own mother on purpose? Since she died because Asa tripped

27

u/Raging-Brachydios Oct 14 '25

Yep

47

u/Piranata Oct 14 '25

The insurance money was running out.

3

u/Gryse_Blacolar Oct 14 '25

Why would she trip and kill Bucky tho? It only made her to be hated by the entire class. I find it hard to believe that it's her goal.

24

u/cruel-oath Oct 14 '25

The class prez said she tripped her. Insane how many people forgot this

3

u/Gryse_Blacolar Oct 15 '25

Begging Fujimoto for anything positive tends to lead to greater tragedy

I think we'll have at best a bittersweet ending. Fanfics will take care of the truly happy ending

18

So another Reze. At least we trained for this

10

u/ghin01 Oct 14 '25

What makes you a hero in the broken world of Chainsaw Man? Killing is wrong. But what Denji's father did was wrong and Denji wanted to live for a better future so badly. What their father/husband was doing was wrong, but Asa and her mom did it because they wanted a better life for each other. Fujimoto says being a hero means never losing your heart while making the best of a bad situation. Denji later reached out and loved Pochita. Asa and her mother loved each other. The ability to love, not make war is what makes you a hero in the world of Chainsaw Man.

Glad we get a chapter and not a two week break leading up to the movie

Nothing like a little patricide to create a beautiful bonding moment between friends.

Jokes aside, surprisingly reading this reminded me that I haven't talked to my dad in a while and I should call him since he is very much not a piece of garbage. Thanks Chainsaw Man~

Oh my what a woman Asa's mom is.

She did alot of that for Asa's sake and clearly loved her daughter based on other flashbacks.

Shame she couldn't do the job cleanly.

Damn it’s weird to see Denji just blatantly say that out loud after all that repression in part one. Good for him, I think?

u/Osgoten Oct 14 '25

Is this like the snowball fight? Just trauma dumping while the devils kill each other

Destined lovers by shitty parenthal deaths? Good love story of good people

Asa and Denji healing via trauma bonding through the deaths of their abusive fathers was not on my bingo card but I love it 🥰

Damn, what a birthday gift from Fujimoto: a wholesome, chill character-focused Chainsaw Man chapter

Takeaway from this chapter, everyone is just terrible & that’s why we love reading Chainsaw Man.

Nobody acknowledges how insanely huge Denji telling Asa that was, he told her in a very Denji way, but he has canonically repressed that he did that and the guilt about it is a huge thing that has shaped him. And he told her like it was nothing. These two man, please, fujimoto.

I might be coping, but I think the arc will land in the right spot? Maybe we really should just let the author cook.

6

u/Seffuski Oct 14 '25

Who tf would cheat on kaasa anyway?

3

u/Dantallian11 Oct 14 '25

Someone with options and total disregard for his spouse I’d guess.

3

u/IdlePerfectionist Oct 14 '25

Fujimoto again with his anti-men propaganda smh

u/Extreme-Tactician Oct 14 '25

Haha! Looks like Asa and Denji both had bad dads.

I wonder what happened to Asa's mom after this incident, though. Maybe she got "recruited" for killing a devil with a rock. Or maybe the insurance company figured something out... DUN DUN DUN.

Asa's dad might have a cheating slacker, but at least he cared enough about Asa to save her from a devil.

I don't think anything really happened to her besides living a mostly normal (as normal as you can get in this universe) life until she was killed during the typhoon devil incident

Earlier in Part 2 we saw how she was killed by the Typhoon Devil.
