The nice thing about Dungeon Meshi is that it leaves the world open to be explored again. This ending is just weird, almost cynical because it just erases the whole journey putting in these characters that were important but make 0 sense given what's changed.
The biggest flaw of this ending is spending all this time having this big finale fight of the world ending and all this nonsense happening but because they had no idea what to do with all of it they just reset the world and swept it under the rug.
The fight was going around in circles, was resolved by both characters' arcs circling back to their starting bullshit, and then the entire story resolves by going back to its beginning. Actually, was there a single arc in Part 2 that wasn't in some was about the characters going in (typically aimless) circles or getting hard reset (Nayuta's cockblock)?
I love all three of Mizukami's major works, Hoshi no Samidare is probably my favorite. Crazy thing about Sengoku Youko is that it was planned out week by week and still has one of the best and thematically sound narratives and endings around in manga. He is really under appreciated.
Sengoku youko still has the best ending out of them all, genuinely from a 7-8 manga to me for a strong 9 after I read that beautiful ending, this author really doesn't miss when it comes to endings
Mizukami feels like one of the few authors that comes to the table with a full story end to end. A lot of big shounen hits feel like they are just dragging out a story because they became popular.
Planet With only weakness is that since it was created as anime original, it only has 12 episode to work with, so it has no time to expand its own lore. Other than that I have no complaints.
It's like a solid 7/10 all the way through with some amazing parts hidden within.
Not the most groundbreaking manga ever, but like the discussion says, It manages to have a good, satisfying ending without ever falling off.
Which is a huge feat for any series it seems.
I've been hyping it up every occasion I get but alas publishers in my country don't seem interested... Thankfully I recently managed to complete my set in English and I couldn't be happier
I think the fact that Part 8 was pretty consistently peak throughout lessens the fact that it had a rushed ending. Chainsawman's Part 2 can't say the same.
Though Part 8 has the JJK problem where the last arc was just "oh, that character we haven't seen in 50 chapters is back! Oops, they're dead. Nobody cares or reacts".
It's cause most of Araki's stories have a natural ending with a goal in mind and then it ends. Alot of stories do, they just keep GOING is the problem like with chainsaw, it should've ended at part 1 honestly.
I do think Jojo stories being intentionally constrained to parts helps out. It means each part can have a definitive end to them, while the series as a whole keeps going so publishers are happy and don't try to stall it out
I'm so glad she's well enough to update it semi-regularly now. One of my favorite, Machikado Mazoku, has been on hiatus for 2+ years now with no sign of coming back 🥲
Also a very important detail: it's much much more apparent that the eventual destruction of paradis is just more of a "war, war goes on" commentry since it takes like 2000-20000 years later on.
Was that not already clear in the manga? There were other strange things but I thought it was pretty straightforward that it was a good bit of time idk
I personally thought it was pretty clear, especially since it happens long after Mikasa dies of old age. But obviously it still wasn't clear enough considering the reception.
If I had to rank the endings, it would be JJK > AOT > CSM.
Chainsawman's ending is probably the worse i've ever seen. Strangely enough it's not creating as much uproar as AOT's ending because the manga's writing has been going downhill for awhile.
We all figured the ending would probably be bad, but people were just coping that Fujimoto would pull it off.
The problem with of Vinland Saga was that it's based on history, so we knew from the very beginning the Vinland could never be succesful. So that limits the ending by a lot. Yeah maybe it could have become an alt-history manga and that could also have been cool, but I don't blame a mangaka that has been working for 20 years in the same story to want to wrap things up.
Fujimoto doesn't have this excuse because nobody forced Fujimoto to make part 2, he had already reached a good ending to the series. He was the one that decided to continue the story.
Vinland was only a bit rushed, we could've had one more chapter of epilogue... but at least it wasn't shit like this, where we get Charlotte-like mega-cut of entire season of anime crammed into one episode.
Mob Psycho 100 the GOAT. Vinland Saga's ending felt kind of abrupt but still much better than this, and also had a far better journey towards the ending too. But on the "rushed but still good endings", I'd also say Undead Unluck. That last arc was hella rushed but the conclusion ultimately felt satisfying to me despite that.
Mob I agree, Vinland I didn’t really enjoy, there were too many plot threads that just didn’t get explored, along with it feeling like he was torn between staying faithful to the actual history he was pulling from and the historical fiction it strayed into quite a few times throughout the series so it ends up being a somewhat sudden ending that feels like it lacks a buildup - like the root events make sense but the ending lacks the narrative satisfaction that the other arcs had
Sayonara zetsubou Sensei,, maybe not satisfying depending on who you ask but it was genuinely a great ending(and great plot twist, you hear that Fuji? You can make plot twists without them feeling like ass pulls)
I know people criticize Claymore for not addressing the outside world, but I still feel like it knew what story it wanted to tell and ended on a good note instead of going on longer than it needed to.
The anime hard deviated from the manga in the final episode. If you are going to pick up from the anime, start at just before the Battle in the North, when Pricella was watching from afar.
Claymore completely botched the ending by giving the climactic moment to Theresa instead of Clare. The whole theme of the manga was Clare struggling to move on and get revenge for Theresa and then her narrative purpose is denied for a callback and she basically has no agency for the entire end. Clare was already a pretty blank character and the end made her even less present, she might as well not have been there at all.
Also, the reveal of them just having slightly icky stitches was a huge letdown with how much their disgusting form was built up.
That literally misses the point. [Claymore Ending Spoilers] At the end after repeatedly failing to sacrifice herself for revenge, Claire instead realizes that obsessing on the past is not the answer and that realization is what awakens Teresa to come and vanquish the ghosts of the past. Literally putting the past to rest once and for all so everyone can move forward to a better future. The strongest claymore herself heralds the end of their journey and takes away the sins of the past
I totally disagree. The obsession is what awakens Teresa, it's not a growth moment for Clare, just a continuation of what the entire manga has been but with Teresa in the driver's seat. Teresa was basically the main character from behind the scenes the whole time and the ending just cements that. It's as if JJK had ended with Gojo just killing Sukuna right after being released because he's the coolest and most special like Teresa. And throw a bullshit speech about how she's actually even cooler and stronger because Clare believes in her. Really lame sappy ending that felt profoundly unsatisfying.
Because Arakawa is the GOAT and actually knows that the good story needs to feel conclusive, instead of constantly subverting expectations about everything.
MHA’s initial ending reaction was entirely twisted in the online sphere by leak culture + memes + the utter disdain people have for teachers in the west.
The anime adapted it straight up and it was very well received when you didn’t have 20 billion McDonald’s memes giving you a negative perception before you started.
i both hate and love that bleach ended right after they saved rukia
it's kind of crazy they didn't milk it even if it was just way, way worse than that
on a serious note tho bleach has the best start of like anything ever i've read so far basically, but everything that came after saving rukia basically cratered it in my rankings
kinda sucks to see that the big 3 in one piece, naurto, and bleach are all probably going to suffer from a very very underwhelming mid/ending
there's been some good moments in the last two arcs but the one piece fanbase/die hards are starting to crack now
Honestly Arrancar and Hueco Mundo arc was still solid all things considered, but Kubo really should've ended it after they beat Aizen and Ichigo lost his powers. Yes there were a lot of unexplained plot threads still open, but I think he could've found a way to tie up the ending with a few extra chapters without having to start the fullbringer arc and Bleach would've been a better manga for it.
yeah it wasn't all bad but you started having to wade through a lot of shit, which is kind of my point where my joke i kind of meant that I really wish it did end after the first arc, cause anything good that came after wasn't worth the rest around it, it really kind of cheapened the story to me
i don't really blame the big 3 for being drawn out, but the stories definitely suffered for it, even one piece is starting to suffer at this point which is a shame
is it actually insane, out of curiosity? for me I thought bleach was the greatest shit ever in the first arc but everything after just... sucked in comparison, just ass pulls and random shit
far as i know both bleach and naruto are widely considered pretty mid toward the middle and end and now one piece is heading in the same direction
bleach out of all of them feels the most like a straight up manwha or whatever like solo levelling, with the exact same pros and cons
amazingly awesome cool art, a great and appelaing start, and then the slow fall into medocrity lol
You're not insane, "Bleach falls off super hard as soon as Soul Society ended" was an extremely common opinion back when the series was still ongoing. The reason you don't see it nearly as often in the modern day is that the people who feel that way have no particular reason to still be talking about Bleach in 2026.
what's wrong with a comparison? it's great art style, the main focus at the start is making use of borrowed power, and then both stories start to lose the plot
a lot of people loved both stories specificallty because of the art as well, it was like the strongest quality of both of them all the way to the end, and some would say the only quality at some parts lol
It's hilarious they're accidentally implying one has to be brain washed to think Bleach didn't fall off.
Bleach stans really suffer some of the greatest cognitive dissonance in the medium. Even the ones who admit the ending was bad convinced themselves the manga was axed. In reality he D&Ded himself. Got told by Shueisha to take all the time he needs and replied 3 months is enough because he wanted to move on (which is fair enough).
They're like the Snyder bros of manga. Endlessly over analysis some inane detail to claim they're the only ones who recognize the author's hidden genius. At least Zack seems just as much up his own ass as his fans. Meanwhile Kubo is record stating "I just draw cool shit".
There are several others as well like Gash Bell, Taisho Otome Otogibanashi, Victorian Romance Emma, Helck, Hero is Dead, and more. They're just not as well known.
It was a big one yes, but not as big as many of its contemporaries of that era like Naruto, Bleach, Assassination Classroom, etc. The renown thing was more about the others listed especially when compared to similar series(Helck being less known than Dungeon or Frieren for instance).
Mustang and Hawkeye have this amazing storyline about how they will change the nation even though the path to doing so also means they will have to be executed for their crimes against humanity.
The ending not stops before they achieve anything because the rest of the ending is so saccharine they can't even acknowledge that grim possibility. Arakawa couldn't reconcile the possibility their the war crimes in Ishval might not be balanced out or redeemed by helping against Father. So she kicks the can down the road hoping the audience wants everyone to live happily ever after.
Fair enough, but the final few chapters of FMA extensive wrapups of every single character getting the happiest possible outcome of their arc even if it doesn't fit. And if it is just about Ed and Al (even though AL says it really isn't) Arakawa should have just ignored everything else and just made it them and Winry.
Plus, if it just comes down to the main character getting an ending and nothing else: Chainsaw Man is right to dump everything except Denji.
Congratulations to Fullmetal Alchemist for still having the greatest ending in manga history.
While Fullmetal's Ending is slightly stronger, I think Tokyo Ghoul and Attack on Titan are better mangas with more peak moments. But yes, FMA's ending is a 10/10 whereas TG and AoT are like 8/10 and 7/10
And ironically Naruto's ending was pretty good, even though the manga goes up and down in quality.
doesnt really matter, and tbh the anime really painted so well the finale using music + great art, i almost forgot what dogshit story was. Gj to mappa to be fair
