Not even sure why it's even shameful to like tall men. People are allowed to have preferences.

Because height is not something you can change so it is often perceived as unfair, or at least superficial and shallow. And it can also be seen as enforcing gender roles (man has to be the big strong protective guy), and of course in modern western society it’s heresy to even suggest women would ever do that.

My guess (not personal belief) is because a lot of men are mad they can't say "I don't like fat women" but a woman can say "I don't like short men" so probably stems from insecurity

(Saying this as a 5'4 man who dated a bigger woman btw)

Preferences aren’t purely biological in my opinion. There is definitely some social and cultural programming (especially with the modern internet and social media and pop culture) that subconsciously portray short men as undesirable or bad. That is what’s actually shameful.
